A lister on another (unrelated) mailing list sent the following message yesterday, regarding a birth certificate listed under the British India Office. "The certificate has 'When born' column with a Bolton address. In the Sex column, it has Boy then underneath there appears to be 'Girl' crossed out but under that a '4'. Could a certificate be issued for a 4 year old who had been born in India but if so I would have expected a note to indicate that. The date of birth is 25th May 1870 but the certificate is dated 25th January 1887" Could anyone explain the apparent inconsistencies of this, and why it appears amongst British India records? I haven't seen this entry myself as I don't subscribe to FMP. Valerie

I must admit I don't like the .com search either. I couldn't fine tune it enough to get the information I was looking for. I had a look at it but gave up. Not being able to take my accrued loyalty points with me either was another deciding factor in deciding against it. FMP are bad at delivering promised databases. I haven't found that they never arrive but some do seem to take forever. They also keep changing the categories for databases. I'll know where to find one, go back for it and can't find it. A mail gets sent asking where they've hidden it. Ancestry aren't clever either by not announcing their new databases but again they aren't always easy to find even when you do know about them. I don't have a problem with Ancestry They have a link on the home page for recently added data and a card catalogue search so you can find databases fairly easily With FMP they don't even include all the data in their "list of all records" FMP promised electoral rolls over two years ago, when last I asked when they said they didn't know if they would ever be available So why announce they would then ? Thanks Ruth I thought so Apparently not all Worldwide's are the same :-( I have the India records now so thats a step forward Why they find it so hard to make all data available on all their sites is beyond me Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/01/2014 11:29, Ruth Appleby wrote: > Yes Nivard, through the co.uk site. Hi Ruth Thank you but I am OK for the present but appreciate the kind offer May I ask if you have the worldwide via the .co.uk site? Hi Connie I can't say if they use the same servers, however they are two different sites The search on the UK site although poor is a whole lot better than the .com version I find that FMP announce new data then take an age to deliver if they ever do, whereas Ancestry release new data and don't tell you they have FMP obviously have a different definition of worldwide to most peoples Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > As I undertand it all the addresses, (.co.uk, .com, etc) all point to > the same servers. Hi Marion Yes I too go back to the 1837online days and have used FMP in all its guises I took out the worldwide subscription under an offer they were then running, only to find they excluded a lot of the UK records, despite many emails back and forth I have only ever had their hint that one day it will be all available to me Because of promises of new data like the electoral rolls I renewed I am still waiting The UK electoral rolls 2002 - 2014 are not available to me Some of the UK records I have now discovered are available, Divorces and Boyds but as far as I can see the death Duties index is still not usable neither are the GWR shareholders So partly there but still a way to go Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/01/2014 10:12, Marion Woolgar wrote: > Good Morning Nivard, > > I don't understand how the various Findmypast web sites work. Good Morning Nivard, I don't understand how the various Findmypast web sites work. Way back when, I used to have a findmypast.com subscription and then about 5 or 6 years ago, after the company was bought by BrightSolid, I received an E-mail saying that I should use findmypast.co.uk instead - and I've been doing that ever since. However, one thing that I am sure about is, that if you pay the worldwide price, you should get access to all the databases that you are paying for. I suggest that you write to Findmypast, telling them what you are not able to access and ask them to fix it - perhaps by transferring your access to the .co.uk web site. Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex
Morning John Do you have a worldwide subscription via the .co.uk side ? As that is different to the .com version Unlike Ancestry I can't access the .co.uk side as I have the .com I hadn't on this occasion contacted their support but as its resolved now I don't need to Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/01/2014 08:36, John Hanson wrote: > Nivard > I have a world wide account and have no trouble accessing the records. > Are you using findmypast.co.uk or findmypast.com? > Have you written their support people and asked why? > Regards > John
Morning Marion I am pleased to say that the India record database has now popped up :-) I have the "worldwide" findmypast.com version and as soon as I heard of the India records release I checked to find I didn't have it but it has now so all to the good I have become used to not have access to many of the UK databases so it was no surprise hence my post Unfortunately unlike Ancestry, the findmypast.com subscription does not allow access to the .co.uk UK version, if it did it wouldn't have been the half the problem it has been Previously even though its named the worldwide subscription I have only had access to approx 90% of the UK databases I have just rechecked and find at least two I couldn't get at before are now available The UK divorce index and Boyds families are two I now have which I didn't before So clearly they have changed something at some point So all to the good I will have to recheck and see if I now have all the UK databases now Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 30/01/2014 08:06, Marion Woolgar wrote: > It should be possible to access the new British India Office records with > either a UK or World subscription. > > Perhaps it was a glitch yesterday, it certainly seems to be working OK this > morning. Nivard I have a world wide account and have no trouble accessing the records. Are you using findmypast.co.uk or findmypast.com? Have you written their support people and asked why? It should be possible to access the new British India Office records with either a UK or World subscription. Perhaps it was a glitch yesterday, it certainly seems to be working OK this morning. However, as an alternative route into the new databases, try http://blog.findmypast.co.uk/2014/2-5-million-new-british-in-india-records-r eleased and scroll down almost to the bottom of the page where you will find a link to the Births and Baptisms section. On the lower right side of that page, you will find links to the other India Office databases. Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex
Unfortunately this new data is only available to findmypast.co.uk users The so called worldwide subscribers are once again excluded :-( Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 29/01/2014 14:51, Marion Woolgar wrote: > Hard on the heels of Ancestry's new collection of PCC Wills, Findmypast > (FMP) have today released records of the British India Office 1698 to 1947 > (although the dates for various types of record does vary considerably). > Members will perhaps have used the FIBIS site, but this new collection from > FMP seems to go way beyond that by providing many original images that can > be downloaded. > > This new class of records will be of particular interest to anyone with > ancestors who were serving in the British Army and I was surprised at how > many entries I found for WOOLGAR and variants. > > Best wishes, > > Marion Woolgar
Hard on the heels of Ancestry's new collection of PCC Wills, Findmypast (FMP) have today released records of the British India Office 1698 to 1947 (although the dates for various types of record does vary considerably). Members will perhaps have used the FIBIS site, but this new collection from FMP seems to go way beyond that by providing many original images that can be downloaded. This new class of records will be of particular interest to anyone with ancestors who were serving in the British Army and I was surprised at how many entries I found for WOOLGAR and variants. Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex NB: I am also posting this message to the SFHG List, so apologies if you should receive it twice.
Dear friends, Has anyone else come across this - Genes Reunited has deleted many of my marriage entries. Obviously for 1800s I have no exact dates so I use 01/01/1838 for Q1 1838, 01/04/1838 for Q2 1838 etc. For the past week each entry just saves then when the page is reloaded the next day, they are gone. So far two enquiries to GR have gone unanswered. I have lost dozens of entries. Regards, Paul Cheesman (Bangkok)
Paul, I'm not sure Free CEN covers every census for every location. I think it's done county by county on a volunteer basis, so each group will work a different speeds. If Charles Pritchard lived 1833 -1900, he logically should appear in every census from 1841. So it's more likely he's been mistranscribed than missed. I'd look around for a local library or FHS centre that offers free access to Ancestry or Find My Past. Find My Past will allow a basic search, which is good for identifying possibilities, but you have to pay for full details Ancestry is good with wild cards. So you could try things like cha* *ard, which allows for variants like Chas, and a variety of surnames. In 1851, I suspect James Davey might step brother or brother in law. I'd have to see the entry and other family members. Peter.
