Hello, I was a member of this list some years ago. I've found my MAYNARD clan beginning in 1600's in Bodiam, SSX and traced to my immigrant, William, and his wife, Sarah Kemp (Widow PHILLIPS) 1851 to Indiana, USA. Sarah married (1) William Phillips, born in Goudhurst, Kent, 1796, died before 1828. I don't know when or where they married. They had 1 child, Mary Ann Phillips, born in Bodiam, Dec. 1822.. She married 16 Dec. 1843, John GLADWISH in Bodiam. He was born in Bodiam to John and Mary GLADWISH, 10 Oct. 1819. In 1841, John GLADWISH was in Rye, SSX as a single man and living in a boarding house. In 1843 he was in Bodiam marrying Mary Ann Phillips. In 1844 he was in Tice, SSX where his child, John GLADWISH, was born, 1 Dec. 1844 (or baptized). I know they arrived in the USA 8 April 1857.on the ship Christiana. Their last name was spelled GLADISH on the passenger list and it does have alternate spellings, with a double D sometimes. So 1851 is the last record I need. They were still in England somewhere. They were not located in the 1851 soundex with GLADW* so it might take a bit of searching to find the right spelling. I don't have access to this census. The family was very close to their families, both sides, so I would like to find out more about the GLADWISH(s) by ordering parish film, a hopeless task unless I can get some hits. I didn't find any earlier Gladwish(s) in Bodiam or even death records for his parents. Rye Parish is already on my rental list. Thanks for reading this. My SSX and Kent surnames (and pretty well researched so far) are CLOUT, KEMP, GOLDEN, MAYNARD. Hello Doug, I may be the lister you were thinking of with a 'Piper' in the family. Unfortunately, 'my' George was a shoemaker and died between 1851 and 1861. Thanks for the thought - perhaps there is another Piper researcher with 'your' George in his family. While clearing some of my no longer wanted printed matter, I came across an article about a Cabin Steward named George Piper who drowned off the coast near Brighton in 1889. This one page article was printed in Vol. 14, No 1, March 2000 of the magazine produced by The SUSSEX FAMILY GROUP. Hoping that I might help the "Piper" lister, I have saved the relevant page and would willingly pass it on to any interested party. Sincerely, Doug Eldridge in Australia. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SUSSEX-PLUS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
Whilst the place mentioned in your 1524 doc is probably East Angmering, you will need to be careful in identifying exactly where it is. The present day Ordnance Survey map has the village of Angmering just inland from East Preston, but to the best of my knowledge there is no such place today as "East Angmering". My Ordnance Survey map of the area doesn't show any location name called East Angmering in the vicinity of Angmering and East Preston, so is there an East Angmering somewhere else? From my knowledge of Sussex I rather doubt it. But we must also remember that West Grinstead, for example, is quite a long way south-west of the town of East Grinstead. Hi Karen 1. On the 1841 there is a John Smith aged 6 giving his birth around 1845 and seeing as you have his birthdate this negates that, BUT interestingly his parents are Thomas and Jane in Arundel Ssx. Perhaps an IGI parent search for Sussex might find a John with a brother Thomas in Arundel??????? 2. There are a few possibles for the 1851 using Sussex as the guide on ancestry. 3. May I suggest you try to find his immigration records. In Adelaide South Oz there is a mine of information to be obtained from the Maritime Museum at Port Adelaide. Immigration records should be available at the main library in your state. A few phone calls will ascertain where is the best place to start in Queensland. 4. The parish Registers for Arundel would be another likely starting point. I did the PR's along with a genie cousin of mine and we got over three hundred years of Parkers in Two reels. Well worth it if they didn't move. Even to find his parents it is worth $5-00 per reel. Check where your local LDS is and go from there. Hi List, I am hoping someone can help me or even be related. I have been searching for the last 27yrs details of my GGGrandfather JOHN THOMAS SMITH family. We knew he was born around 1850 but did not know where or when or how he came to Australia or if other members of his family came with him. We did have the name of George Smith a Vet Surgeon as his father & Ann Dash as his mother, I don't know where from, & have not been able to verify that. Visiting a cousin twice removed for the first time, found that she had the bible belonging to him with his birth date as 3 February 1851 born at Arundel in the UK and he was given the Bible at St Peters Sunday School 3rd October 1865. Well since then, searching the 1851 Census could only come up with a Thomas John Smith who was 3 mths old born at Hastings Sussex to Joeseph & Eliza Smith. This could be him???? Here in Australia on his marriage certificate & in the bible it does have his name as John Thomas. The marriage certificate does not give his age or parents names. Anyone in the Arundel area that can help solve the mistery, is their a John Thomas, or could it be this Thomas John Many thanks in advance Karen Goldcoast Australia
I am new to this list and doing some research for a friend. Is anyone researching WALDER? I am getting in a muddle with them and need a little guidance, please! I have a Frederick J WALDER who married Harriet SOTHERDEN in 1884. Frederick, who was down as John on the certificate, said he was 29 on the marriage certificate which gives a birth year of 1855. He also said his father was William (deceased). A William WALDER married an Elizabeth WALDER which confuses things even more! They did not have a child Frederick, but they did have a John b 1851 Rogate. The only Frederick I can find was one born in Rogate in 1857. I sent for his birth certificate but his parents are given as Alfred & Maria which has completely thrown me! It looks as if Maria's maiden name was Hear or something like it. Have not investigated that yet. In 1901 Frederick is actually down as John Walder with wife Harriet in Tonbridge, Kent. I KNOW that this is the correct husband with the correct children. His age is 45 which gives a birth year of 1856. Born in Rogate. In 1891 Harriet is with the children and no sign of husband Frederick (or John). Again I know I have the correct family there. But where is Frederick or John? I have also looked for an alternative spouse for Harriet thinking I had the wrong marriage certificate, but I cannot find one. Can anyone help out here please? That would be great. Suzie (from Orkney)
Bob Phillips on behalf of FreeBMD coordinates a very small band of volunteer photographers who take photographs of the BMD index pages at the Family Record Centre (FRC) in London. The FRC is removing access to the index books in a few months prior to its total closure next year so Bob would like to take as many photographs as possible before it is too late.. Anybody who can and would like to help please contact Bob. He's not necessarily looking for multiple visits, anything helps and the job is easy, just a steady hand and a digital camera is needed. Further details of the requirements and how to contact Bob are at: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robert.phillips13/rescans.htm The images are a useful facility on the FreeBMD website when the microfiche copies they work from weren't clear enough for the FreeBMD volunteers to transcribe accurately. Does anyone have any interest in / or have any information about, the DANIEL family of East Hoathly, please? I am particularly interested in a Mary DANIEL who married Joseph PAGE on 22 December 1735 at East Hoathley and who appear to have moved to Waldron in 1749. Thanks. Chris Page

I am trying to tie up a loose end here.I have an ancestor Edward Belchamber widower aged 57 married Widow Chandler (presumably around the same age),in Kirdford in 1740. There doesn’t seem to be a suitable Chandler in the Kirdford PR’S.So I was wondering if anyone researching Chandler would have a candidate for Widow Chandler. Hi all I am new to this list and just wondered if someone could tell me if the Crawley FHC has reopened yet? (I have tried the Crawley list but have not had any reply) I checked on the familysearch.org website and it said it was closed until end of July 2007 but I have tried phoning on & off all last week but no answer. I may have the wrong number or perhaps it has just not reopened yet. Can anybody help please? - as a newbie to FHCs, I would really like to go there asap! Thanks Carolyn
