    1. [SXP] Request for a phone contact.
    2. D Eldridge
    3. Hello All, I am asking if SKS with phone will make a call for me. William ( Bill ) Mepham, a cousin to my father was 91 in 2001, totally blind but with a clear memory of events during his life time including playing with my father - they were great mates. In 2001, I met with him at Holy Cross Priory, Cross in Hand, Heathfield. Since then I have lost contact. He said he was hoping to move to a retirement home for ex servicemen at Brighton and was on the waiting list for accommodation. There has been talk on this site about a similar home at Eastbourne which is closer to Heathfield and it is possible he got in there. Bill had a younger brother, Leonard T Mepham who I believe lives at Brighton. Their friendship was strained but Leonard is the only kin likely to benefit from Bill's estate. I am asking if someone would look up the Brighton phone book, make contact with Leonard if possible and find out what he knows of Bill's whereabouts. He knows nothing of me and was too young to have met my father. To ease into a conversation with him, the caller would need to mention my Grandfather William George Eldridge of Brede who is a brother of Leonard's mother Rose Catherine Eldridge.. Failing that, a call to Brighton Servicemen's home to see if he made it to there. A long shot would be a call to Holy Cross Priory to see if they will pass on Bill's new address. Any help will be appreciated. Douglas Eldridge

    1. [SXP] Wyndhams of Petworth House
    2. D Eldridge
    3. Hello All, I read wth interest the letters re Petworth House although I have no family ties to Wyndham. My home town is Brisbane, Australia. During the years 2000-2003 I had the pleasure of working along side a Mrs. Wyndham. During our conversations on family history, she said that her husband was descended from the Wyndhams of Petworth House. In 2001, I visited East Sussex but not Petworth House. But, in a small country church, the floor of which was earth, in a hidden hamlet called Little Sampford on road B1053 - approx.between Chelmsford and Cambridge, there is fixed to a wall, a plaque to the memory of a Priest who also is descended from the Wyndhams. The plaque is old, hard to read without being up close and the pictures I took barely were readable. I gave these to Anita. The reason for writing this message is to ask if those with a genuine interest in Wyndham would like to contact these Brisbane Wyndhams with a view to adding to the links. I cannot be sure what F/History knowledge they have if any. I am happy to sound them out. Doug in Australia.

    3. Hi Margaret, Not sure how much I can help here. Violet Leconfield would presumably have been Beatrice Violet Rawson who married Charles Henry Wyndham 3rd Baron Leconfield of Leconfield in 1911. Their residence was Petworth House. I cannot find anything on the web that suggests Petworth House was an infirmary - you may be best to try phoning them direct on 01798 342207. The Royal Sussex Regiment have their own website - http://www.royalsussex.org.uk/RSLHG_main_index.html - and are very helpful but I doubt that you would get a reply that quickly. There is a company called The Sailors and Soldiers Home Eastbourne at 18 Hyde Gardens, Eastbourne. Miss F MacCartie is listed at The Sailor's and Soldier's Incorporated Help Society at 25 & 27 Upperton Road in the 1915 Kelly's - search www.historicaldirectories.org by keyword, specify Sussex and then put in 27 Upperton Road as your keyword. Violet may have been a patron of the society. You could also try Eastbourne Council http://www.eastbourne.gov.uk/leisure/museums-galleries/local-history. hth, Anne > Date: Sat, 6 Oct 2007 16:37:11 +0100> From: margaretusmar@gmail.com> To: SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Subject: [SXP] Soldiers and Sailors Home, Eastbourne> > Hello all,> > This is an urgent request for info, as the person who needs it is back off> home to Canada on Tuesday morning and I promised I would help - I also> mentioned how helpful this list was!> > We have a (now deceased) relative who served as a machine gunner in WWI with> the Royal Sussex Regiment. he was taken priosner on 27 May 1918, and> repatriated on 3 December 1918. 3. Hello all, This is an urgent request for info, as the person who needs it is back off home to Canada on Tuesday morning and I promised I would help - I also mentioned how helpful this list was! We have a (now deceased) relative who served as a machine gunner in WWI with the Royal Sussex Regiment. he was taken priosner on 27 May 1918, and repatriated on 3 December 1918. Amongst his paperwork, there is a certificate stating that he was a PoW, the care he received, etc. , and what help he was initially given on his return. The paperwork and certificate are signed by: Miss Flora MacCarty, of the Soldiers and Sailors Home, 27 Upperton Road, Eastbourne and by Violet Leckonfield of Petworth House. The initial help they received was in the form of clothing, good meals, and the use of stationery and stamps to contact their relatives. I know Petworth House is now owned by the National Trust - was it a convalescent Home of some sort during WWI? Does anyone either have a photo of 27 Upperton Road, or recognise the names of the two ladies above? There is other info on the papers, but this is now so faded it is a fight to decipher it. I would be very grateful for any help before the Tuesday flight deadline. Many thanks.

    1. [SXP] Edward Jenner, Chiddingly, Part 2.
    2. Colin Parkinson
    3. Hi everyone, This is an update on the message I sent last Monday, 1st October, and a big thank you for those who have helped. I was overjoyed at the response that simply reflects the generosity of the family history community. Many have given guidance and pointed me in the right direction and given so many leads it will take a time to explore them all. We now know that Edward Jenner married Ann Brook, both of this parish, at Waldron (3 miles from Chiddingly) on 21 October 1828. The family appear on the 1841 census at Chiddingly. The index of convictions at the Lewes Quarter Sessions shows Edward Jenner of Chiddingly, aged 37, was convicted on 22 February 1844 for stealing 2 sheep and as a former convict [?] was sentenced to 15 years transportation. Their index shows an Edward Jenner aged 21 was convicted on 18 January 1829 for stealing one pair of spatterdashes value 2/6d. [Spatterdashes protected horse riders legs from mud, forerunner of spatts.] I suppose the same offence today would warrant an ASBO! [For those not familiar to UK punishments an ASBO is an anti-social behavour order.] Edward was transported from London on the "Maria Somes" departing 25 April 1844 and arriving at Tasmania 30 July 1844. We have some leads in Australia to work out what happened to him there, we have a possible death for him in Hobart aged 81 on 14 August 1887. We know 3 of Edward's sons, George born 1839, Jasper & Edward [junior] were at the at the Hellingly Union Workhouse at the time of the 1851 census and have all three of them marrying and on subsequent census. Don't know what happened to Edward's wife Ann (nee Brook) or the daughters. Some of you directed me to a question on the RootsWeb forum regarding Edward Jenner. I have made contact with the lady and started to exchange some information, her husband is also related to George Jenner born 1839, I believe we are second cousins once removed. A lot of this summary needs to be validated by certificates etc.. I would now like to find out what happened to Edwards wife Ann, his daughters, his life in Australia after his pardon and where he fits into the mass of Jenners that appear in the Chiddingly, East Hoathly, Waldron and district parish records. My thanks again for everone giving me this great start, what we have achieved in just a few days is astonishing. Regards Colin Parkinson

    3. It would appear Edward Jenner was convicted and sentenced to 15 years at Lewes quarter sessions in February 1844 and was transported on board the "Maria Somes" which left in April 1844 and arrived Hobart Van Diemans Land 30th July 1844. A copy of the ships indent on arrival at Hobart in Tasmania will provide a good deal of information with regards to appearance, tatoos etc, as well as a brief description of his conviction. A google of the ship's name may throw up other researchers of convicts on board for that voyage of 1844.
