If anyone happens to be in the records of Arlington, Sussex, would you mind looking up a record in 1788 for a christening of a NICHOLAS ATTWOOD? I am interested in finding out who his father (and mother?) were. Also, I would greatly appreciate a quick lookup for the information from the marriage record of NICHOLAS ATTWOOD and ELIZABETH CORNWELL who were married 10 May 1806 in Hurstmonceux, Sussex. I got this little bit of info from the LDS site, but unfortunately I am not in a position for a while to visit a library. I am trying to find out if the above-mentioned Nicholas and Elizabeth are the Nicholas and Elizabeth who are the parents of these people: John Attwood b: May 22, 1808 in Selmeston, Sussex, England Nicholas Attwood b: December 31, 1809 in Selmeston, Sussex, England Samuel Attwood b: October 13, 1811 in Selmeston, Sussex, England John Attwood b: Abt. 1812 Elizabeth Attwood b: January 17, 1813 in Selmeston, Sussex, England Thanks so much for any and all help!! --------------------------------- Be a better Globetrotter. Noticed I'd sent this to list yesterday to the wrong address! Here's hoping I've got it right this time! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Yvonne Edwards <vonavitchy@googlemail.com> Date: 8 Oct 2007 13:59 Subject: BIDWELL in COOLHAM & PUTNEY To: " SUSSEX-PLUS-L-request@rootsweb.com" < SUSSEX-PLUS-L-request@rootsweb.com> Hi All, First of all I hope I am posting on the right list for Coolham and Putney? Apologies if its not the right list(could someone advise me if i'm wrong please) I am helping a family friend trace her tree. Her father -Frank- birth certificate shows he was born in feb 1909 London Rd Croydon, mother said to be May Lydia Bidwell of same address and a domestic cook in norfolk as occupation. I have been in touch with some very kind people on both norfolk and surrey lists and also the Croydon studies dept. and still cannot find a May Lydia Bidwell anywhere! Frank is known to have lived somewhere in Putney, as he took his daughter there in the 1980's to show her the house they used to live, and took photo's, but there is no sign of where abouts it is! Also she recalls Frank visiting a church yard with a cemetery in Coolham to his Uncles grave. Apparently Coolham has a Post Office 2 shops, a garage, a pub and this church, and about 4 houses. One of the houses he took his daughter to in the 1980's he called at and took photos as thats where his Uncle used to live. I was therefore wondering ..hoping even..IF (and hopefully i am!) i am on the right list, would someone on the list be living anywhere near Coolham to do a look up for me of any BIDWELL's please. This might then give us a lead to the rest of the family.(fingers crossed!) Thankyou very much in advance. Regards, Yvonne Edwards - Cardiff, U.K. -- Regards, Yvonne Edwards - Cardiff, U.K.
Hi Alison, Did you know about this child: It is probably the same family as the mothers maiden name is Marwood. Births Jun 1920 (89%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Errey John M Marwood Hardingstone 3b 58 There is a fellow, I believe his name was White who transcribed the Alfriston parish records, if you look back in the archives you may find his email and be able to ask him for a copy. He sent them to me several years back, but I only seem to have a paper copy and not one on my computer unfortunately. Were Benjamin and Eliza from Alfriston too? Hi again, I have been looking at this more closely and many of the family (and neighbours) were fishermen. Henry could have been at sea or could have perished at sea. Jane, wife of James has remarried by 1851 - James was a fisherman who presumably met with that particular fate. Alfred appears to have married an Ellen Green (cousin most likely) and was a Navy pensioner in 1871 and 1881. In 1861 Ellen is on her own as fisherman's wife. It was not unusual for the men in a family to progress from fishing to Merchant Navy or Royal Navy - I have a number who did both. I cannot find Henry or Jane in 1841 but have found a Jane in 1851, 61 and 71 born around 1797 in Sidlesham who would fit as Henry's wife - EXCEPT that she is described as single in each. I cannot find her for certain in 1841. I have no idea whether this was Alfred's mother - but they are living in the same road in 1871. I will send the images off list so see what you can make of them! cheers, Anne > From: vestlaybanks@btinternet.com> To: heather.brooks@virgin.net; SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2007 15:04:27 +0100> Subject: Re: [SXP] Green> > What was the name of the third child?> And where were these children born?> That would help pin them down on the 1851.> > Suzie (from Orkney)> > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Heather Brooks" <heather.brooks@virgin.net>> To: <SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com>> Sent: Tuesday, October 09, 2007 2:57 PM> Subject: [SXP] Green> > > Hi to all who replied. Hi Chris, Perhaps re posting your message - with the surnames of Interest in Capital Letters on the Subject Line - would be helpful. People are more likely to respond to surnames - Should some find information at a later date - or persons researching the same lines - connections are much easier . Cheers. What was the name of the third child? And where were these children born? That would help pin them down on the 1851. Heather. I was just about to reply but see that Anne Capewell has come up with the same thing I did - a father James on the 1841. I did find a possible Jane married and living in Newhaven. If you have a bit more info, I'm sure Anne and I between us might be able to help. Hi Heather, Do you have the ref for the 1841 census as I cannot find them. I can find a James and Jane (with a Frances and Alfred, amongst others) and I have found a Jane and an Alfred in subsequent censuses - not together but both in Portsea and in the same street on one. However this Jane is described as unmarried so I am a little confused! cheers, Anne > From: heather.brooks@virgin.net> To: SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tue, 9 Oct 2007 12:36:46 +0100> Subject: [SXP] Green 1851 census> > Hi, looking for Henry Green born Sidlesham, Sussex 1788, wife Jane and children Frances 1828 and Alfred 1834. Hi Can I make the assumption that Elizabeth PERCY's b1667 was the daughter of Joceline PERCY 11th Earl of Northumberland ? She married 1st the Earl of Ogle, 2nd Thomas THYNNE and 3rd Charles SEYMOR (6th Duke of Somerset) There son Algernon b1684 died 1750 was the Earl of Hertford later 7th Duke of Somerset and was later created Earl of Northumberland in 1749. It was his daughter Elisabeth who married Sir Hugh SMITHSON which lead to the PERCY title passing to the SMITHSON's who are now the Dukes of Northumberland and incumbents of Alnwich Castle. P.S.My wife's family are decended from the 7th Earl who was beheaed in 1572. Dear Listers, Unfortunately there are times when I go about things in the wrong sequence. Please ignore my previous request for a phone contact to Len Mepham. What I should have asked was for someone with access to the Brighton telephone directory and who is willing to help, to contact me. There is no need for multitudes of respondants all working for me. I need a postal address for Len Mepham and phone number as backup. Any information should be passed outside Rootsweb. I will send my email address when someone replies. I hope this method is within protocol and I apologise for my previous lack of thought. Doug Eldridge in Australian.
