    3. Good evening list, My name is Sue Cotton and I am helping my friend David Tilleyshort who is a descendant of Charles SHORT born 1849 in Westgrinstead. Charles came to New Zealand in April 1874 - on the passenger ship Atrato list as Charles TILLEY age 24 a 'platelayer' from Sussex He changed his name throughout his lifetime for some reason: 1849 Born Charles SHORT 1851 census Charles SHORT 1861 census Charles SHORT 1870 Charles SHORT Married Frances Mary BALTON 1874 Arrived New Zealand as Charles TILLEY 1874 Charles Tilley SHORT (bachelor) Marries Fanny SHEPPARD 1875 First child is born named Charles Francis SHORT All other children were named TILLEYSHORT 1920 he died as Charles TILLEYSHORT in Dunedin NZ We need to know: 1) What happened to his 1st wife Frances Mary BALTON & the two step-children 2) Why did he say bachelor when he married 2nd wife Fanny SHEPPARD 3) His mothers maiden name was TULLEY did he use this name to 'lose' his real identity? I have searched the UK census's trying to track Frances & her children - I cannot locate any deaths in the UK that fit the ages - it doesn't appear that he had any children with her before he left the UK - nor can I find them on any ships lists.......... Is anyone researching BALTON SHORT or TULLEY that may have a link with the above family. TIA Sue (ex Blackburn UK now Auckland NZ)

    3. Tony, if you have access to the 1901 census images ie from Ancestry, at the top of the page make a note of the district number, the page you are on then and click onto the link next to it. This should bring up the list of districts plus the enumerators description of the route he took. I have used this many times to find that obscure lane, court or street of the period which has now long disappeared, even way back to the 1851 census. Hope this helps cheers Bob in Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "tony baker" <tony@tbakerakf.orangehome.co.uk> To: <sussex-plus@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2007 10:15 PM Subject: [SXP] North Wall Lewes, a correction My apologies to Anne and others who responded to my last posting, it should have read Green Wall, Lewes and not as I previously stated: North Wall. 3. A big thank you to those who responded to my previous request for postal information of Len Mepham. I have been prompted by another relative that he was last heard of in Bexhill and there is such a person on the Bexhill phone list but he didn't answer when I phoned. Nothing wrong with that except my bad timing. Also, a phone call to Holy Cross Priory revealed that William Mepham died while a resident at the Priory in March 2007. For all you have done for me, I thank you all again. Doug Eldridge in OZ

    3. Hi Tony, According to a 1938 map on www.old-maps.co.uk the site of the old town wall is along Brook Street (see www.streetmap.co.uk ) and I assume that the wall then came around with Lancaster Street at the southern end. There is a North Street in the vicinity. On the 1899 map Brook Street is not named but the are a few houses along there. Have a look at the surrounding streets in the 1901 census - it might give you an idea of where it was. What is the census ref? cheers, Anne > From: tony@tbakerakf.orangehome.co.uk> To: sussex-plus@rootsweb.com> Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2007 11:54:25 +0200> Subject: [SXP] North Wall, Lewes> > I have family shown residing at 179 North Wall Lewes in 1901.
