    1. [SXP] HORNER Puzzle
    2. etb
    3. Hello All, Has anyone any record of a Richard HORNER who was born about 1773? His address was Holy Saviour Southwark in 1803. I believe this was in Surry at this time. Richard may have also lived at Warnham, Sussex. Richard was educated in England. He worked as an Apothecary and Assistant Surgeon in Australia until his death in Sydney in 1816. He arrived in Australia in 1804. We know nothing of his family. Richard's children were named: James, Sarah and Mary Ann. Mary Ann was named after Richard's wife, Mary. He met her in Sydney. With thanks Kind regards Elizabeth

    3. John, The Birth Cert. you have, is it from the GRO or is it from the local registrar? >>>>The Birth Cert says Elizabeth Friar Burton. However, my Elizabeth is Bessy (Elizabeth) Flora Burton, and I can not find any seperate birth for an Elizabeth Flora Burton in Sussex which is where the censuses say that she says she was born, Eastbourne specifically. No baptisms of Burtons at either Eastbourne or Easebourne.<<<< Checking on Freebmd, Elizabeth Friar BURTON was registered at Worthing in the Apr-Jun Q 1849, it might be worthwhile having the local Worthing Registry Office confirm the names in their Register with that transcribed by the GRO. The Volume and Page No. will not be of any use to the local office only her date of birth. As for her baptism, it may have been in the mother's former parish not where the family were living at the time. Baptisms are often recorded outside the birth parish or village. Hope this might help in your search. Jenny

    2. Phil White
    3. Hello Sussex Plus Listers, I have a need for a solution to a marriage data question and hope someone with access to Henfield PR's can help. Michael Thorns bn West Grinstead married a Mary Knight bn Henfield March Qtr 1849 at St Georges Southwark, and the couple show in the 1851 Census at Brighthelmstone. Michael appears to have died December Qtr 1856 at Brighthelmstone and there is no 1861 Census data for him in 1861. There is a marriage for a Mary Thorns to a Thomas Allwork Dec Qtr 1860 and a Cenus report in 1871 with Mary Allwork wife age 41 showing a birth place of Henfield. There is a good probability ththese two mary's are one and the same but I need PR data for rhe Allwork marriage to see if Mary was a widow or what her fathers name was. Hope one of you good folks can provide an answer for me Phil White in New Hampshire USA Roots in Sussex & IOW

    3. Many thanks to all who replied to my query. I have the details of the family - Marriage certs etc, but am specifically looking for the Baptism of Elizabeth. No baptisms of Burtons at either Eastbourne or Easebourne. Both born 1849 and other circumstantial evidence matches up. The baptism is important as it may sort out the name for me. There is nothing in the ancestry of Elizabeth, daughter of James and Mary Jane which would prompt the use of this second name, no people named Friar that I can find. It may be that the Registrar misheard. The baptism would confirm this or not as the case may be. One way or another I need to find it. Thanks again John --------------------------------- For ideas on reducing your carbon footprint visit Yahoo! For Good this month.

    3. Hi John, According to Parloc Lancing and Preston are only about 7 miles from each other. Nearest major town seems to be Worthing, but I could be wrong. Only about three miles away. These are not my areas of Sussex, BUT I have seen on numerous lists that there are pretty good Coast Guard records around which might be enlightening to get his records that way, which may shed some light. 1. [SXP] William Streeter
    2. Bob Cunning
    3. Hello from Australia. William Streeter was born at Mountfield,Sussex, on 21 June 1842, was a miner and migrated to Australia with his brother Henry on the "Lady Milton" which arrived in Sydney on 28 June 1862. William died in Brisbane on 22 Jan 1931, aged 88. William's parents were Edward and Rebecca and the 1851 census shows the family living in North Trade Workhouse, Battle, East Sussex. Rebecca was dead by this time. The 1861 census showed that Edward had married Eliza (?surname) and William was living with his sister in Folkestone. William married Margaret SHERRINGTON (1856 to 1905) at Gladstone on 23 Dec 1880. Is anyone researching this STREETER line? Cheers, Bob in Melbourne

    3. Hi Harvey, Found Edward Fudge & his brother William on the 1841 UK census, in High Halstow, Kent (same area as Isle of Grain), both recorded as age 20 (ages rounded down to nearest 5 years), and working as Male Servants. From IGI, they appear to be the youngest sons of 7 children baptised in St Werburg, Hoo, Kent to Edward and Ann Fudge (William b. 1818 and Edward 1820). Also from IGI, the death of Edward Fudge senior in 1827 and a possible marriage to Ann Burges in Chatham, Kent in 1802. Most of the others on the same census page were either farmers or agricultural labourers, but given the proximity to the sea, and places like Chatham (a naval base), there would have been mariners in the area at the time. Hope this helps (if you want a copy of the 1841 census image, I can send it off-list.
