    1. [SXP] John ROBINS -1671 - Chichester
    2. PMR
    3. Hello Listers I have come across a note gleaned some time in the past that in 1671, a John ROBINS of St Pancras, Chichester, was listed on the Hearth Tax roll. As I have ROBINS ancestry in Chichester - with them going back and forth to the Portsmouth area with some regularity - I'm interested in finding out more about this John. My 8 x ggf, John ROBINS, was buried in Alverstoke on 17 June 1672, with the Inventory taken on 28 June. His Will is dated 24 Apr 1672 and probated possibly on 9 Jan 1672(3) - in Latin, so a bit difficult to be sure. He mentions 2 sons in his Will - Thomas and John - and wife Alice, but her Will in Hampshire in 1684(5) indicates clearly that she was not their mother. My immediate query is this: how can I find out more about John ROBINS of the 1671 Hearth Tax please? Was he a 'commuting' ROBINS too? As he was a Mariner, Chichester and Portsmouth would be within easy reach of each other. Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

    1. [SXP] Horsham & Warnham Registers
    2. Phil White
    3. Hi to all, In my continued search for THORNS I am at last faced with the Horsham & Warnham group and wonder if anyone has access to data from these Parish Registers. My only Horsham data is for one family of Ralph & Mary with births 1687-1704 and then its Warnham with several families with births from 1735 through to the 1860's. This group of Thorns introduces the given name of Ralph which continully appears through the generations. I note that Warham does not have any Look Up Exchange person listed while Horsham has one but only for years preceeding 1635 so there is no help there If anyone can help I would appreciate a reply Phil White in New Hampshire USA Roots in Sussex & IOW

    1. [SXP] HARVEY children's info please
    2. PMR
    3. Hello Listers I have the baptisms of the nine children of my 3 x ggf's sister Sarah and her husband James HARVEY, as follows: Lucy Harvey bapt. 28 Apr 1779 Chichester Sarah Harvey bapt. 2 May 1780 Chichester Eleanor Harvey bapt. 10 Jun 1781 Chichester Mary Ann Harvey bapt. 11 Sep 1782 Chichester Harriot Harvey bapt. 12 Apr 1784 Chichester James Harvey bapt. 15 Jun 1786 Chichester George Robins Harvey bapt.22 Mar 1788 Chichester Charles Harvey bapt.11 May 1790 Chichester Elizabeth Harvey bapt.7 May 1794 West Wittering The first six were at St Peter the Great, the next two at All Saints', and the last one a little further afield. I am in touch with a descendant of George Robins HARVEY and have quite a lot on that line, but apart from the baptisms, that is all I have on the other eight. There are no likely marriages on the CD. I checked with the SFHG Baptism Index, but not joy there, nor on the Sussex Marriage CD. Is anyone able suggest a direction I could go please? Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

    3. Hi Judy BMD indexes on Ancestry have an entry in Q3 (Sep) 1902 for both Arthur Richard Oak Portsmouth Vol 2b page 1015, and Annie Dopson Portsmouth Vol 2b page 1015 Obviously this is not 100% proof as there could be others on the same page, but if you have other evidence then it is probably as good as it gets if you don't want to order the certificate - unless someone has access to the Portsmouth parish registers. I had a sudden brainwave (don't know why I didn't think of it earlier) and checked the naval records available on the National Archives site. I found the records for Arthur FOLLINGTON and they showed that her did serve on HMS Triad but in 1918, twenty years before the submarine was commissioned. I had been thrown by several sites which claimed the navy only ever had one ship by that name. Further research has shown that there was a yacht called HMS Triad which served a small part in the landings at Gallipoli in WW1. This must have been the ship that Arthur later served on. I'm not sure what a "yacht" is in naval terms. I have visions of a small ship under full sail but that seems unlikely in 1914. If anyone can enlighten me further I'd be grateful. 3. Hi Phil, This site may explain his role more - http://www.data-archive.ac.uk/findingData/snDescription.asp?sn=4127. I wonder if he was a 'selector of guardians' - perhaps involved in who would look after an orphan? If you search on 'relieving officer and vaccination officer' you will find a number of references especially in workhouses. It might be worth searching http://www.historicaldirectories.org/ and http://www.workhouses.org.uk/. hth, Anne > Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2007 21:25:43 -0400> From: pwgrandmapa@comcast.net> To: SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Subject: [SXP] Occupation> > Hello All, I am hoping someone can make some comments about the recorded > occupation of John Summersell Thorns in the 1901 Census, RG13/948F9p10> John is listed as a Relieving Officer births and deaths in several > Census reports but 1901 adds the following which I have not seen before> ---Vaccination Officer and Elector of the Guardians--- > Its not entirely clear as the checking marks tend to overwrite the > original words but I would like to see your various comments Phil > White in New Hampshire Roots in Sussex & IOW> > > -------------------------------> To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SUSSEX-PLUS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message _________________________________________________________________ 100’s of Music vouchers to be won with MSN Music https://www.musicmashup.co.uk

    1. [SXP] Fw: HMS Triad
    2. Many thanks to Jenny, Gareth and especially Jackie for their help with my problem. It seems that Arthur FOLLINGTON was not on board HMS Triad when she went down Jennie Tokoroa, NZ I have come into possession of a photo of one Arthur FOLLINGTON. The date of the photo is unknown. He is wearing a royal navy sailors uniform, the tropical white version. His hat seems to bear the inscription HMS Triad. A net search shows that only one royal navy ship bore that name and she was a submarine commissioned in 1939 and sunk in 1940 by an Italian submarine the Enrico Toti. Before her engagement with this submarine Triad had been in Malta which would tie in with the fact that Arthur is wearing his "whites" if the photo was taken there and sent home to a loved one. Is there anywhere I can get a list of the crew members on the sub when she went down to confirm that Arthur was on it at that time? It was sunk with no survivors. Any help appreciated.
