    1. [SXP] NEW - Barham and Hamsey website from Sussex Archaeological Society
    2. Chris 4Genealogy
    3. I have just visited an impressive website about the parishes of Barham and Hamsey by Sussex Archaeological Society and volunteers that I thought Sussex listers might be interested in: www.bandhpast.co.uk It includes tithe maps, Will and census transcripts, buildings history, archaeology, photos and more, although some parts are as yet works in progress. I wish I had ancestors from these parishes ;-)) For those of us without ancestors from this area the website provides an opportunity to see what is available in the archives and gives useful background information, which I am sure, is applicable to other parts of Sussex. Chris (PS I have no connection to anyone involved with the above projects)

    1. [SXP] Message for Anne - re mystery of Alfred Robins
    2. PMR
    3. Hello Anne My reply to your email address alc_goytre@hotmail.com bounced for some reason, so I'm trying this. As it was, your original message came only by being forwarded to me. It didn't come direct, so there's something funny out there in the ether! Many thanks for your reply and for the confirmation that Alfred is NOT on the 1851 Census. I'll claim the 1846 death as his. I understand what you mean about 'married' for Lucy. She obviously had been married, so that's what 'they' put! I won't be sending for the Cert as it won't tell me any more than I know - that Alfred ROBINS died, aged 27. English DCs don't (or didn't then) give the name of either parent, although I was very fortunate with a ancestress who died in1838 - she was described as widow of ... etc, with his occupation. Quite a bonus. >3 year old grandson Alfred(??) W Peat(?) This is not such a mystery when the rest of the family is known. Two of Alfred Robins's sisters - the eldest and the youngest - were married to PEAT brothers Henry & Richard, so one of their children was with his grandparents. I've had some fun today, checking on the FreeBMD and 1901 Census. Some that I thought would be there just weren't, but I filled in a couple of gaps. Cheers Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

    3. Hi Pam You 'could' miss out on a valuable piece of info depending on who the informant is. I was able to track down a very elusive relative purely because the informant was the as yet unknown daughter-in-law. Just a thought - but don't say I twisted your arm! 1. [SXP] ESRO Lookup - KEMP, REED / PAGE
    2. John Kemp
    3. I have just rejoined the list after an absence of over twelve months due to illness, working visits abroad and generally too many things to do. If anyone is going to the ESRO in Lewes, would you be so kind as to perform a couple of look-ups please? According to the certified copy of the birth certificate issued for National Insurance purposes to my grandfather, Henry KEMP (born 27 March 1881) his parents are Mark KEMP and Sarah Jane formally REED. We have struggled to find any details of Sarah Jane REED. >From the GRO Index we have found a marriage of Mark KEMP and Sarah Jane PAGE (1881 Q4 Ticehurst District ) we have also found from the GRO Index the birth registration of Sarah Jane PAGE (1856 Q4 Ticehurst District) there is no mention of Sarah Jane REED. Would you please check the Burwash Registers for the wedding of Mark KEMP (1881 Q4) and the birth of Sarah Jane PAGE (1856 Q4), we would love to know whose names are on the certificates. Kindest regards John Kemp Gloucester UK

    1. [SXP] Sussex Hop tokens - prices up
    2. Eddie
    3. Greetings, I have mentioned Hop tokens a number of times on this list and have just had an interesting e-mail exchange with a dealer. It does seem that the value of these tokens has risen considerably recently due to some competitive bidding on e-bay. It is difficult to say wether these prices will be sustained although in the long term I suspect not. This is bourne out by my own experience and the dealers. If you do have some to sell - maybe this is a good time to do so:-) Background. For those new to hop tokens - these were small 'coins' issued by individual farmers as payment for work done in the fields. The tokens could be spent in the 'farm shop' and exchanged for real money at the end of the harvest. Many farms in Sussex and Kent issued these tokens which were made from lead, or some other cheap alloy. As a direct link to ones family history they are rather fun to collect. Look out for books written by Henderson eg Hop Tokens of Kent and Sussex and Their Issuers by A.C. Henderson -- Kind Regards Eddie Lord Researching: LORD; REEVES; SELDEN; FREWEN

    3. Hi Colin I am researching the HAMMOND family in Chiddingly - do you know who Ruth's parents were? Regards Anji ----- Original Message ----- From: Colin Parkinson To: SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, November 12, 2007 9:21 AM Subject: [SXP] Jenners of Chiddingly, Waldron, Wartling etc. Hi, Can anyone tell me if there is a fiche available of Chiddingly and local area Parish Records? I have posted an earlier query with great response & help from many particularly Heather Brooks. I am trying to find the baptism of Edward Jenner born circa 1806. His parents Stephen Jenner & Ruth Hammond were married 1798 at Wartling. Edward's brothers were born at Chiddingly:- Richard 1801, William 1803, Trayton 1805 and George 1812. There is a bit of a gap 1805-1812, was Edward baptised elsewhere during this period? Incidentally Richard married Sophia Brook in 1822 and Trayton married Tryphena Harmer 1827, both marriages at Chiddingly. Edward himself married Ann Brook in 1828 at Waldron and after Ann's death in 1842 he married Philadelphia Sanns in 1843 in Chiddingly. (After stealing 2 sheep in 1844 Edward was transported to Tasmania for 15 years and never returned.) Edward and some of his brothers appear in the Chiddingly census for 1841. I will be happy to hear from anyone researching this family, particularly if I can find Edward's birth. Any help & guidance would be much appreciated. Many thanks Colin ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SUSSEX-PLUS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [SXP] William HOWELL birth record
    2. Bev Wadhams
    3. I have a William HOWELL on the 1881 Census as the son of James & Clara HOWELL born Hove , aged 6, a scholar. I have been looking for a birth in the years 1874/5/6. I have been in touch with East Sussex Record Office who have searched for his birth in Hove St.Andrews, Hove St John the Baptist and Hove St. Andrew Waterloo Street baptism records. I have obtained several certificates using the FREEBMD site details for 1875 but none have been the William HOWELL I have been looking for. If anyone has any access to any baptismal records for the Hove/Brighton area please could they have a look for any William HOWELLrecords. Thanks Bev

    3. Hi Pam, >From what I can make out on the 1851 page Alfred is not there but a 3 year old grandson Alfred(??) W Peat(?). Lucy is marked as married but that may have been an assumption or a simple mistake by whoever filled in the census data. I have several ancestors who have been described as married when I know they were widowed. This perhaps raises more questions. Where was Alfred snr? I too could not find another Alfred Robins (all variations) on 1841 census so assume that the death you have found was of this Alfred. The only way you could be sure would be to send for the cert - although I am not sure what appears on the earlier death certs. Why was the grandson Peat? Perhaps he was born out of wedlock and Alfred and Lucy married later. This would mean that she was Lucy Peat. However the grandson was born in Pimlico, Mddx - some way from Chichester. don't know how much this helps! cheers, Anne > From: cliveden@acenet.net.au> To: sfhg@rootsweb.com; SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2007 08:32:11 +1000> Subject: [SXP] The Mystery of Alfred ROBINS> > Hello Listers> > I have details of Alfred ROBINS, s/o Charles ROBINS and Mary née> WARES, as follows:> > In the 1841 Census, he listed with his parents as 'of 7 West> Street, Chichester, aged 20'.> > In the 1851 Census, there is an Alfred ROBINS listed, with wife> Lucy, living with his parents at West Street, Chichester, aged 34. 2. PMR
    3. Hello Listers I have details of Alfred ROBINS, s/o Charles ROBINS and Mary née WARES, as follows: In the 1841 Census, he listed with his parents as 'of 7 West Street, Chichester, aged 20'. In the 1851 Census, there is an Alfred ROBINS listed, with wife Lucy, living with his parents at West Street, Chichester, aged 34. Lucy's age is given as 33, born Nutbourne, Sussex. Alfred's age gives him a birth year around 1816/1817. I haven't been able to locate the marriage on FreeBMD. However, in the PRs of St Peter the Great, Chichester, I found the burial, on 11 Dec 1846, of Alfred ROBINS from West Street, aged 27 years. This death appears on the FreeBMD List, the Ref being Chichester 7-257. 27 in Dec 1846 would give a birth year of 1819. Charles and Mary are definitely of West Street in the 1851 Census. Am I going round the bend or something? Maybe there was a second Alfred ROBINS in West Street, Chichester in the 1840s. Any suggestions anyone to help sort me out? Please? Many thanks.
