    3. Derek and others on this list, I have quite frequently found "missing" quarters on the BMD images on Ancestry and have found most of these are the result of a handwritten late entry on the bottom of the last column of entries which in turn tends to throw the character recognition software out of sequence, or the handwriting may have been miss-interpreted by human eyes. The usual way round this is to enter a surname either just before or after the one that's missing and the quarter which is missing. Then by using the next or previous buttons it is possible in most cases to find the page image which was earlier missing. A bit time consuming but it has worked for me. FreeBMD has a way to go before all births etc are indexed to the end of 1921 (you can check on their progress). hope this helps cheers Bob in Aus. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Derek Cooper" <diesel13@tiscali.co.uk> To: "Sussex Plus" <SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 09, 2007 7:46 PM Subject: [SXP] MISSING BMDs Greetings all.Does anyone have access to BMDs apart from Ancestry and possibly Free BMD?I found a death registered Worthing1965,which leads me to believe the birth was 2nd qtr 1921.This qtr.is missing from Ancestry! 1. [SXP] The Glass Industry of The Weald
    2. Jenny Myers
    3. I have no connection to Glassmakers although there might be some on this list who are. I found this book for sale with a very informative index. The publication contains 231 green topped pages with photographs, diagrams, illustrations and an open out map to the rear pastedown. This is the first comprehensive account of glassmaking in the Weald of Sussex and Surrey. The few forest glasshouses outside the Weald, about which anything is known up to mid-summer 1966, are also discussed, so the book deals with much of the forest glass industry of England.....From the jacket flap... 2. Ros Dunnico
    3. Thank you to everyone who posted ideas for me try to identify the windmill shown in a painting by my greatgreatgrandfather, James Sturt of Arundel and Warningcamp. From the Sussex Mills Group website I found a postcard picture of the mill. It was easily recognised because it has an unusual flat top. It was called The Cement Mill, Arundel and was built in 1864 on the banks of the River Arun and was used to grind material dredged from the river for cement manufacture. I did not realise they used mills for this. Unfortunately it no longer exists. My greatgreatgrandfather built a number of houses in Arundel and Warningcamp and probably knew the men who worked there. 1. [SXP] BLUNDEN and OVERINTON marriage, late 16th / early 17th centuries
    2. Jon Whiting
    3. Hi all, Overington BLUNDEN was a Cromwellian adventurer who obtained lands in Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1653. He was married prior to 1630, but I have not yet found the name of his wife. I am interested in finding his origins. Both the surnames BLUNDEN and OVERINGTON were fairly common in Sussex at this time, and it seems that Overington was often used as a forename also in Sussex. I am assuming that a BLUNDEN male married an OVERINGTON female sometime in the late 16th or early 17th centuries, but have not yet found such a marriage. If anyone is looking at these two families, and can give me any information about his possible origins, then it would be much appreciated. Regards Jon

    1. Re: [SXP] Father Absent on Brith Certificate
    2. Sandra Shelley
    3. Hi Richard, If the parents weren't married to each other, the father's name could only be added to the birth certificate, at registration, if he was present. I believe this still applies today. Many such father's did not admit responsibility, as it meant they would have to support the child. On the other hand, some girls may not have been absolutely certain of the identity of the father. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the father's name could only be added in his absence, if he was married to the mother of the child. As I have these doubts, I ahve also sent to the List, as someone else may have a more definite answer. 3. Hi Gordon, I have had a quick look on Ancestry for 1861 and 1871 and cannot find him. As you have details of his marriages you should have his father's name - this may help to find him. There are a few possible births on FreeBMD - Escott seems to be a West Country name so I would go with Blandford (or somewhere near there) as his birth place. let me know what else you have and I will have another look. cheers, Anne > From: gordonhillman@sympatico.ca> To: SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2007 15:39:49 +0000> CC: gordonhillman@sympatico.ca> Subject: [SXP] Harry Escott (1859-1948)> > I am gathering information on Harry Escott, a noted jockey and horse > trainer, who road and trained horses for the Grand National around > 1895-1919.
