    3. Hello Richard I have Amelia Watford, daughter of Charles Watford and Frances Newnham born in Lindfield, Ssx c1803. She married Richard Smith b c1802 Cuckfield and they had eleven children. In 1841 they were living in Cuckfield with children Jane, Richard, Joseph, Henry, Mahala, Edgar, Fanny and Leonard. The twelve children of Charles Watford and Frances Newnham produced a truckload of descendants, some Watford and others Whatford. I have information on some of these from the IGI, census records, LDS film 1364153, bmd etc but do not know where the other surnames you mention fit in the puzzle. What is your relationship to Charles and Fanny Watford? Is there some specific information that you are looking for? Let me know. 2. greg garden
    3. Hi, I was wondering if someone is able to look up the National Burial Index for me and see if they can find a burial for a William and Anne LAMPARD nee Everest. William was born about 1765 and also Anne. She was chr in Cowden, Kent but I believe that they may have moved back to Withyham, Sussex after the birth of a child James in 1801. This could be where they are buried as her parents, grandparents, etc all came from the Withyham district. All only possibilities as I cannot find a death for them in Kent. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanking you, Roslyn Garden.

    3. Hi Bob, I don't live in the area but have had a look on www.old-maps.co.uk and www.historicaldirectories.org - unfortunately without much success. I did find this http://steve.pickthall.users.btopenworld.com/ssx1867/trotton1867.html - interestingly Stephen Newell is not listed but a Mrs Hannah Bloxall is. This is interesting http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=41691. >From looking at the preceding and subsequent pages of the census Garden House would appear to be somewhere between the crossroads and Maysleith to the north west, possibly before the flour mill. I have also checked Royal Mail and the house does not exist with that name. sorry I can't be of much help. happy hunting, Anne > From: bob.newell@ntlworld.com> To: SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Date: Wed, 2 Jan 2008 11:36:00 +0000> Subject: [SXP] Milland address> > I wonder if there is someone who lives in Milland who could give me some > information on an address in Milland Lane. 1. Re: [SXP] Resident of 38 Lanfranc Road, Worthing between 1900-13 re Woolgar
    2. Helen Shipley
    3. Thanks to those who responded. Perhaps I should have mentioned that Marion Woolgar and I often correspond and she has been of immense help to me over the years, as I know she has for so many others. We have already shared addresses related to my family, although I have yet to send her those I am working on at present. My query has been partially answered as I contacted Worthing Library and a very kind librarian looked up information for me. I haven't got to the bottom of why a Woolgar was listed in Steyning Union records as resident at 38 Lanfranc Road as the directory for the period concerned, c1905, does have anyone of that name listed but I do have a list now of all the WOOLGAR names which appear in the directory - courtesy of the aforesaid kind librarian. As I often the case I have more questions to answer and it is also possible that the record in the workhouse register was filled in from earlier information and may not have been current. It is a good job I like a challenge! If you read this Marion - I will be in touch soon with the information from Steyning Union - I have tried to note all WOOLGAR entries - I just have to do an essay for next Tuesday first! 1. [SXP] POLLARD & COX
    2. Ron Cowell
    3. I am trying to identify people in photographs taken by my grandfather in the 1890s. One might be of my grandmother's sister Elizabeth POLLARD who married Joseph COX in London in 1881. In the 1901 census they were living at 30 Victoria Road, New Shoreham with their daughter Grace COX born 1895. I can remember my father mentioning a cousin Grace so she would still have been alive in the 1950s perhaps still living in the Shoreham area or possibly in the Bexhill area although not necessarily still a Cox. Joseph was an accountant and I believe Grace was as well. If anyone knows anything about this family I would be very pleased to hear from you. Ron

    1. [SXP] Milland address
    2. I wonder if there is someone who lives in Milland who could give me some information on an address in Milland Lane. I have an ancestor who lived at Garden House which from the 1861 census appears to be in Milland Lane. My ancestor Stephen NEWELL was a Grocer and Baker, where would his premises have been in Milland. He was married to Mary BOXALL who's father Thomas was quite an affluent member of the community. Does anyone have any local knowledge of this. Regards Bob Newell

    3. Dear Listers First a very Happy New Year to all I also need to than everyone who helped me with requests last year - I was unable to reply for a while due to illness and family problems, so please forgive my tardiness. I do always appreciate the help given. My present problem is regarding locating a Mr WOOLGAR who is recorded as a relative in records of Steyning Union Workhouse, with an address of 38 Lanfranc Road, Worthing. The exact date is unclear due to an extended period being referred to in the records and I do not have an initial for this person. I found an on-line directory but that is for 1915 and is not relevant. The earlier, 1905, Sussex directory which is available on-line does not record Lanfranc Road and the references to WOOLGAR's are not relevant either in this case. I cannot get to Worthing myself at the moment or I would look up the directories in the library there. If anyone can assist I would be extremely grateful. Mr WOOLGAR may have been staying with whoever is the official resident of the address so any names may be of help. Regards Helen Helen Shipley

    1. [SXP] COBDEN and MORRIS
    2. Dorothy Holden
    3. I am researching my MENZIES line and my gt Aunt Mary Ann MENZIES married a John MORRIS. In 1891 they were living at 393 Commercial Road, Portsea. They had two children, Margaret Johanna who died in the December Quarter of 1891 aged 6 and John Stewart. John MORRIS died in the September Quarter of 1897 and Mary Ann then married Harry KEMP in the March Quarter of 1899. In 1901 they are living at 399 Commercial Road. In 1901 John Stewart was a boarder aged 11 at Mann House School, Fairfield Road, Havant. John Stewart MORRIS married Laura COBDEN in 1912. I believe that they had at least two children, Thomas E registered December Quarter 1912 and Elsie M registered March Quarter 1914, both at Chichester. Laura was the daughter of Edward and Agnes COBDEN. In 1891 the family were living in Portsmouth, Edward is stated as being born Halifax North America and is aged 42 and a licensed victualler, living at 66 Elm Road, children listed are Emily aged 19, Annie aged 17, George aged 15, Edward aged 7, Thomas aged 6, Laura aged 4 and Albert aged 3. In 1901 only their son Edward aged 18, son Thomas aged 17 and Laura aged 14 are at that address. Agnes and all the children are listed as born Portsea. Does anyone have connections to the MORRIS family as above? 1. [SXP] Anyone researching AYLING's in Sussex? + links to GOSDEN or ELDRIDGE
    2. howard.king
    3. Hi there, I would be interested to make contact with anyone researching AYLING's in Sussex..... Particularly Emily AYLING - born 1840 - Rogate West Sussex. She was the daughter of William and Martha AYLING. On the 1861 Census she was down as working at the House of John GOSDEN in Midhurst, On the 1871 Census, she seems to be working as a Servant for the TAIT family at Timbercombe, Spaxton, Bridgewater. Records suggest that Emily gave birth to Percy AYLING in 1873 in the Hanover Square area of London - presumably unmarried! I am also very interested in the into any AYLING family links into the ELDRIDGE or GOSDEN families. Thanks, Regards, Howard King Ipswich, Suffolk

    3. Hi Deborah Nazareth House was a Roman Catholic Convent & Orphanage and more recently, a school. The buildings still exist but have been converted into flats and called St James' Place. If you do a Google search you will find more information. There is a photo on www.geograph.org..uk/photo/122335 The Roman Catholic Diocese is Arundel & Brighton. There is no reference to archives I could find on their website www.dabnet.org You could try the East Sussex record office http://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/leisureandtourism/localandfamilyhistory/esro/default.htm Best wishes David in Bexhill, East Sussex, UK ----------------------------------------- Deborah wrote :-> I just wondered if anyone knew of Nazareth House in Bexhill?> I just found out that this may be the orphanage that my Granny was in in the years between 1910 - 1920.> Either that or Malmsbury House.> She would never speak of her experience there and destroyed any records of her life before coming to Canada at age 16.> Would there be any records still around that would show if she was in their care within those years?------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ _________________________________________________________________ Fancy some celeb spotting? https://www.celebmashup.com

    1. Re: [SXP] Address: Bourne Walk, Hastings - in 1910
    2. bob campbell
    3. Debbie, As an original Hastings resident now in Australia, can I suggest you contact East Sussex archives in Lewes and via them the Hastings Library. They have been most helpful to me over the past year and just may be able to locate Bourne Walk for you, and then maybe the electoral roll for the address. Also some of my London ancestors became orphaned about the same time period, and were sent eventually in 1906 to Canada to the McPherson's home in Ontario, Canada, later taken over by Dr Barnardos, and became what is known as British Home Children. You may like myself find a record in the passenger lists leaving the UK for Canada, on Findmypast.com, and from this the arrival lists for the same ship and voyage from the archives in Canada. There is a message list available dedicated to British Home Children and you could find a record of the 3 TUBBS children by asking on that same list. britishhomechildren@rootsweb.com Unfortunately on arrival in Canada most sibling orphans or British Home Children were split up and ended up in different families, you may be able to locate them listed as English born "Home Children" on the now available 1911 Canadian census. Also as in my case the two orphaned boys later joined the CEF in Ontario in 1915. Attestation papers on line when located revealed next of kin names and addresses back in the UK. My own father was himself a UK based Dr Barnados boy, and a few years back, at my request, following my father's death they sent the entire contents of his file to me in Australia. Hope this helps, Best regards and good luck in all your searches for 2008, cheers Bob in Australia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Debbie Jesson" <wjesson@sentex.ca> To: <SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, December 30, 2007 2:16 AM Subject: [SXP] Address: Bourne Walk, Hastings - in 1910 Greetings, I wondered if someone could help with finding an address in Hastings? On a death certificate, I have the address of 8b Bourne Walk, Hastings. I looked on the present day map and couldn't locate it. Is it still there I am working on my Granny's lost family....'TUBBS' ...that lived in St.Leonards and Hastings up to that point , but seemed to have disappeared from then on. The 3 kids ( and recently found out that there were more) were sent to an orphanage and eventually came to Canada. Granny would never speak of her time in the home and destroyed all records. I have searched from that point forward for deaths of her parents, to no avail. I even had the Sussex group to hunt for a grave site...but none showed up. The family is as follows: ALBERT E. TUBBS - father - b. 1877 CHARLOTTE LAVINIA TUBBS (no marriage record, so may be under her maiden name of ROSE) -b. 1875 REGINALD TUBBS -b. 1903 ALICE TUBBS - b. 1906 WILLIAM TUBBS - b. 1910 My interest in finding the address is, that it might be a worthwhile investment to order the 1911 census. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help. Regards, Deborah

    1. [SXP] LEPARD (or LEOPARD); Hamsey near Lewes
    2. Nick Leppard
    3. I'm hoping someone might have access to the Hamsey Parish records to check a marriage entry I have recently come across. The entry I have is for Robert LEPARD who married Margaret BEACHE on 29th June 1591 (Family Search gives her surname as BRENCHE). Margaret is stated as being from Lewes. The reason I want to check this is that my most distant relative so far found is Robert LEOPARD (my 9th great grandfather) born 1529 in Barcombe who married Margaret? sometime! Margaret is said to be from Lewes. They had at least six children between 1576 and 1587. Robert died in 1606, Margaret sometime after. What I'm trying to establish is whether Robert and Margaret BEACHE are my Robert and Margaret or is it an amazing coincidence from that early period. Is the date 1591 correct? or should it perhaps be 1571? or did Robert and Margaret leave it late to be married. I'm assuming at that early period there would be very little further information on Robert and Margaret such as their ages. Any help much appreciated and always searching for any links etc to the LEPPARD name. Happy New Year to one and all Nick Leppard
