>Also, the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester - is this possible >from London? Hi Kathy I can help with the West Sussex Record Office: You can get a train direct from London Victoria station to Chichester. http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/index.htm The Chichester record office is a very pleasant 10-15 minutes walk from the station. Take a look at the link below to the record office and look at the 'about us' section, this links to directions and map. http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/libraries-and-archives/record-office/ I'm sure that people living near to your other areas of interest will be posting advice to help with your other queries. Best wishes Ros - in sunny (at the moment!) Chichester
I am trying to verify some facts in an old document on the PICKERING family. This short part refers to Sussex, so here we are:- "Edward Rowland Pickering married Mary Vere , daughter of Samuel Vere, on 15 October 1805 at Broadwater, Sussex, He was born or christened on on 25 December 1778 in either Surrey or Middlesex and Mary VERE , daughter of Samuel Vere , was born on 24 September 1783, the document doesn't say where but I am assuming this may be in Sussex perhaps Broadwater itself? Can anyone fill in some of those missing facts please? cheers Bob in Brisbane
Hello, Several years ago I made the trip from America to London and one very special day was spent researching at Lewes. It was all made possible because of this wonderful group. One member who was researching the same family I was offered to meet me at the train station and escort me to the Record Office in Lewes. We took the train, hiked up the long hill and he said "Prepare to enter another world" and that we did....through the ancient stone arches and into the endless wealth of information waiting there to be discovered. It's a day I will never forget!!! I came home with a new cousin and friend. I envy your trip...you will be so glad you went. Whilst on the subject do read up about the actual building the archives are in and the jousting ground just by it. Also there is a memorial to the Sussex Martyrs who were burnt at the stake in 1490 Two of them being my direct ancestors Lewis is a delight and don't forget the second hand book stores Alison ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marilyn Tracey" <mtracey@con-centric.com> To: "Sussex" <SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com>; <kebaker@pathcom.com> Sent: Thursday, January 10, 2008 6:15 PM Subject: Re: [SXP] Trip to London in April > Hello, > Several years ago I made the trip from America to London and one very > special day was spent researching at Lewes. Hi Phil If I went much further South I would have very wet feet <g> Traffic is down on most lists Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > Hello Sussex Plus Has everyone gone south for the winter or still > working off Xmas excesses?? Phil White in New Hampshire
The Record Office is a 10 minute walk from the Railway Station, all uphill! It would be best to email them first with your travel plans and to sort out the documents you may need before you arrive. Regards Geoff Foster _www.thinblueline.org.uk_ (http://www.thinblueline.org.uk)
Hello everyone, I'm planning a research trip to London in April with four other people. I was wondering if some kind soul could help me with me travel plans. While in London I would like to visit the East Sussex Record Office, Lewes. How would I get to Lewes from London - what Tube station to get what train? Is the ESRO close to the train station? Also, the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester - is this possible from London? Also, I would like to visit my ancestors' villages/towns of Ardingly, West Hoathly, East Grinstead and surrounding areas - are there trains to these places? East Grinstead probably as it is larger but I'm not sure of Ardingly. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Kathy Baker, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada

Hi Kathy: Here is the website for the British tourist agency here in the U.S. http://www.visitbritain.us/ I think you will find it very helpful. If you contact them and tell them what places you are interested in they will send you information about those places as well as maps. You can buy a rail pass for the U.K. here in the U.S. and can travel anywhere on it. I think they come in 1 week, 2 weeks etc. If you are going to be spending several days in London you can also get a bus and tube ticket which is really a great help as you don't need to have to cope with the money every time you get on a bus or the tube. On the Visit Britian website you can find out what times trains go from London to Lewes and back. Kind Regards, Ann Woodhouse, Los Angeles, California Researching BRITT, CRAMP, LINGHAM & WINBORN, Sussex
Hi all I'm researching the family of my gg-grandmother Sarah BROOKER (married twice first to Jesse TOWN then to John KILLICK). Would love to hear from anyone with similar interests. Her parents were Joseph & Mary BROOKER from Worth in Sussex. Cheers Bryn (Kincumber, NSW, Australia)
Our family origins are mainly in the West Country. However, there are connections to Surrey and Sussex through the above names. Details can be found in the relevant county pages of our website (URL below). Would welcome contact with any relations. Hi all My final lookup requests. After this I will get back in my box - I promise! Could SKS lookup the above for me. I've tried the 1901 census website - a search for "Rosetta HAYES" didn't result in any likely candidates. Searching for "Rose HAYES" produced 2 results, the most likely being the one born in Plumstead, Kent. Many thanks again! Regards Heather in Oz

Hi Chris One other option if your posting isn't successful could be to ask your local library for a *list* of libraries that hold this title. (We do this at my library and don't neccesarily charge for this) Then you could get in touch with the libraries and ask them if they'd kindly photocopy/scan the relevant photo - you could offer to send an SAE, or whatever. Or you could reserve it and pay whatever res fee there is, that way you could check out what else was written about him. Best wishes for the New Year to everyone I have just found a reference to "Sussex in the twentieth century. Contemporary biographies", ed. by W.T. Pike, 1910 where it states that there is a photo of a relative. If anyone has a copy of this and a scanner, I would be very obliged if I could have a copy of the photo of Montague Spencer BLAKER emailed to me (off-list obviously). Could you also let me know if there are any other BLAKERs mentioned in the book. Thank you Chris Researching BLAKER families in Sussex

Hi all, May I thank those of you, who helped me find the info for the BUDDEN-READE marriage, which I have since learnt took place at East Marden. Know I have the grooms, fathers name, I have been able to lock in two sections of my FH, something I have been trying to do for several years! Thankyou, Best wishes, Den Budden
