Maps are very explicit and driving is not on roads as busy as most in Ontario. >From another who has ventured many thousands of miles/kilometres to research in SSX......a little piece of advice.........dont think you are able to visit, Chichester, Lewes and the many other addresses/places of known family in a day or two! Make sure you have your homework done before you leave Canada, knowing the right record office for the records you wish to search and download maps for the list of addresses for where you wish to visit.. Ardingly / Lindfield is close to Haywards Heath - my family were on Hapstead Farm Ardingly, others in Haywards Heath and Lindfield. East Grinstead - a full day - anyone looking to read the PAYNE headstones in the Churchyard after we had been there would have been able to decipher most, and I might add, with a little help from the Bishop!) Lewes Record Office- 2 days if anything like Chichester (One place I didn't manage to visit). Chichester - 2 days with the help of Marion for one, and my hosts for another, I still had far more to find than I had time for. Can recommend the lucnh menu at the little pub on the corner 2 min. from this record office. 2-3 days were spent travelling the countryside to all the farms, household addresses etc I wanted to photograph - the present owners only too happy to have you call by and take you on a tour through. If you happen to do this, take an extra copy of all the information you have on your family having lived there.......the owners like to keep a history of the families who inhabited such places in years gone by. 2 days checking burial places with the historical/church folk in different villages. How long did you say you had for your trip down to SSX?? Regards Jenny Lake Macquarie NSW AUS

    3. Sue: My earliest confirmed STREETER ancestors occupied Dunnings Farm in East Grinstead. I have researched many other STREETERs in surrounding parishes. Nutley lies between East Grinstead and Maresfield. Although we cannot define the exact nature of the connection (yet), the descendants of the East Grinstead and Marefield STREETER families have the same DNA so perhaps your friends would prove to be long-lost cousins as well. For more information, see... http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~streeter/DNA/ I am going to send a copy of my STREETER manuscript-in-progress to you which you may forward to your friends. If anyone else would like a copy please email me privately. I understand that the STREETER family may not be of any interest to you but perhaps some of the source cited would give you ideas to further your own research. 3. Hi Walter, I have found Henrietta MORGAN on the 1851 census and 1871 census with her parents. I also have her parents in 1861, but she is nowhere to be found. According to FreeBMD Dorothy Kate LUCAS was born in Pancras District in 1888, but I haven't yet found her on the 1891 census with parents named William & Henrietta. FreeBMD lists a death for a Henrietta LUCAS in 1916, Paddington District. Please let me know if you wish me to send the census details, even though I haven't made the connection to William LUCAS. I will have a think and try again later regards, Sandra ----- Original Message ----- From: "Walter Morgan" <gator@gbta.net> To: <SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 12, 2008 5:00 PM Subject: [SXP] Need some help > Hi, > > I have a family from the Lambeth, Sussex, Surrey area. 3. Hi Perry, I cannot agree more.... I have actually done a similar thing, tracking my ancestors (Dulley family) through from Oxon to Berks to London and Surrey. I was very surprised to see, that down through the centuries from 1600's to early 1900's that they followed the Thames down through the counties to present day. Mapping our ancestors not only helps get a handle on them, but is really interesting to boot. I also was able to note that two different Dulley lines always stayed with a few miles of each other through the centuries, which was very very interesting. This is even more interesting because I met a genie cousin and we grew up on the same "Dulley stories" but did not know each other. We both came from different lines. The stories were the same though, which of course mean't that not only did they stay within cooee of each other, but really really knew each other and remained in contact. Well they had to in order to have the same stories to tell. I hope that makes sense?? Grin So map your ancestors.....that and time lines are a valuable way of collecting and placing data. 3. Walter, Do you have the marriage certificates for Dorothy? Her father's name and occupation should be listed. The names of the witnesses may also be useful. 3. Hi Mark, I haven't ordered the marriage certificates as I am unsure as to which one to order. I am not sure if Dorothy is Henrietta's daughter, maybe she was adoped. My 2x Great Grandfather Alexander Morgan is the brother to Henrietta listed on the 1851 and 1861 census. Another sister by the name of Kate (nee Morgan) Best wrote letters to my family back in 1916 telling of the death of Henrietta Lucas. I also have pictures of Henrietta and Dorothy sent from England within the same time period. Alexander Morgan passed away 16 Oct 1916 in Hoxie, Sheridan County, Kansas, United States. My family received one letter, Alexander died, and then another letter came. After the second letter, we never received anymore letters or packages from England. thanks Walter

I checked the IOW FHS BMD and found: BROWN, Henrietta 1866 St John, Northwood LUCAS, James BROWN, Henrietta 1844 HARVEY Cowes I would say that is not her, but thanks for looking. On Gwendoline Falla at Derbyshire that one I am not sure about. Her father George Falla married again to Charlotte Ernestine Denise Algathe Falla (I found the name in the UK National Archive listing a divorce in 1910) I think about the only I am going to find Henrietta's husband actual name is to find the burial record for her. I have Henrietta (nee Morgan) Lucas born on the IOW 11 Mar 1841 and died 01 Jan 1916 in London. On her death certificate it lists her husband as William Lucas. They have daughter Dorothy Kate Lucas. Dorothy was married 3 times- George Frederick Falla, James Marke Wood, and Robert Gordon Shewan. The last name she went by was Dorothy Shewan. Its been a very hard family to tract down. I found her once on the 1901 census listed as Dorothy Wood, age 25. I have been able to pinpoint where she was born or a exact birth year. I looked on the freebmd to try to order her birth certificate, but she's not listed. I am at a brickwall as to what to do now. Can anyone give me some help?? thanks Walter Morgan

    3. I have always found maps to be an invaluable resource for researching ancestors. Plotting out who did what where and when can help you understand the known, probable and possible patterns of your ancestors' lives. A visual map also helps make family history more tangible to other members of your family who may not share your same obsession :) In any case, I decided to create a custom map for the following: Dunnings Farm, East Grinstead, Sussex, England Sites of significance in the history of the Streater/Streeter family of Dunnings Farm, East Grinstead, Sussex, England. *Green icons identify known ancestors *Blue icons identify ancestors' associations *Red icons identify potential ancestors (I'll be adding more of these) http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=10429363270310819375 3.000442f0f14a388d5af5c&ll=51.239136,-0.20874&spn=0.187861,0.44014&z=11&om=1 If that long URL doesn't work, just search for Dunnings Farm @ http://maps.google.com/maps I think it's amazing to zoom in on what was Dunnings Farm, click on the Satellite view (instead of default Map view) and see the individual fields, woods, etc. much as they were when mapped in 1776 during the era in which my STREETER ancestors occupied it. And flying over Dunnings Farm and the surrounding area in Google Earth is the next best thing to being there :) You can keep your custom map private or make it public and empower others to collaborate on it as well. I have made mine public in the hopes that sharing will eventually bring other researchers to me with "new" information via the wonder of Google search. Have fun, Perry Perry Streeter (mailto:perry@streeter.com) http://www.perry.streeter.com

    1. [SXP] Research suggestion: Return to Access to Archives again + STREETER
    2. Perry Streeter
    3. The web site is http://www.a2a.org.uk and states: "The A2A database contains catalogues describing archives held locally in England and Wales and dating from the eighth century to the present day... A2A does not yet offer a full description of all local archives but it is regularly updated, so revisit often for newly-included catalogues!" I have searched A2A before but I recently found some new items via these searchable databases that I did not find when I visited the Archives for East Sussex and West Sussex in person several years ago! Here are some of the most interesting... First, I discovered that the birth year of my ggggg-grandfather, William STREETER, son of Richard & Elizabeth (--?--) STREETER, all of Dunnings Farm, East Grinstead, must have been about 1713... Reference: SAS-H/401 Office Copy of Depositions of Witnesses on the part of Plaintiff Creation dates: 27 Oct 1777 ... Wm. Streeter of East Grinsted, farmer, aged 64 ...which lends some evidence to support long-standing speculation that he was identical with the William STREETER christened at St. Nicholas Church, Charlwood, Surrey on 5 March 1714/15 as the son of Richard STREETER whose wife was Elizabeth HUMPHREY. The Baptist congregation to which Richard STREATER of Dunnings Farm belonged met at both Charlwood and Turners Hill in Worth, a parish adjacent to East Grinstead. Second, I discovered an association in 1685 between a Richard STREETER with family of Edward PAYNE and a Robert JENNER Worth that well preceded the STREETERS' assuming the occupancy of Dunnings Farm in East Grinstead from an unknown JENNER by 1750, Dunnings Farm belonged to and was adjacent with Saint Hill Manor, which was owned by Gibbs CRAWFURD who married a descendant of Edward PAYNE: Reference: SAS-H/406 Counterpart of Bargain and Sale Creation dates: 1 Jan 1685 By Katherine Payne of East-grinsted, spinster, to John Arnold of Westhoadly, carpenter, and Edward Payne of Eastgrinsted, gent., - for £202. 10s. - of lands called Sheppards Warnetts, containing 40 ac., with a house or cottage and barn thereon erected, in the occupation of Richard Streater, in Worth adjoining the king's highway from Crawlwy Doune to Copthorne Common, W., lands of John Harber, N., lands of Wm Delves, E. and to Crawley Doune and a field called Paddock field, S. Signature, John Arnold, and seal Witnesses:- Thomas Bodle, Robert Jenner Third, it seems likely that the Richard Streater of Sheppards Warnetts was identical with or otherwise closely related to Richard Streeter of nearby Pound Farm: Reference: SAS-F/292 Mortgage by demise Creation dates: 30 Jan 1690 By John Nicholas of Eastgrinsted, gent., to Charles Russell of Eastgrinsted, yeoman, - for £300 - of All that messuage, barns &c., farm, lands and premises called Pound Farm containing 40 ac. in Worth in the occupation of Richard Streeter bounding to the Common or Wast ground Crawlies Down, W. against lands called Cuddingly, N., to the highway from Crawlies Down to East Grinsted, S. and to lands in the occupation of Wm. Chapman, E. Signature, John Nicholas, and seal Witnesses:- Benjamin Faulconer, Edw. Head, Robt. 3. Hello Kathy A note regarding Ardingly (pronounced 'Arding-lye' not 'Arding-lee' if you didn't already know), West Hoathly and East Grinstead. EG is at the end of the line from London (Victoria station), so easily accessible from London but not from the south. Ardingly only has a bus connection - route 82 which runs between Crawley and Haywards Heath, both with main rail connections from London and the south. West Hoathly also relies on a bus connection, this time the 84 which runs between Crawley and East Grinstead. For the bus timetables search for 'metrobus' and the name of the town/village. I frequented that part of Sussex for a few years (a friend owned a pub in Danehill not far away). It's a lovely area and great for country walks. Have a good trip John -----Original Message----- Subject: [SXP] Trip to London in April Hello everyone, I'm planning a research trip to London in April with four other people. How would I get to Lewes from London - what Tube station to get what train? Is the ESRO close to the train station? Also, the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester - is this possible from London? Also, I would like to visit my ancestors' villages/towns of Ardingly, West Hoathly, East Grinstead and surrounding areas - are there trains to these places? East Grinstead probably as it is larger but I'm not sure of Ardingly. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Kathy Baker, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
