Eastern Standard Time, jane@claras.eclipse.co.uk writes: I thought maybe everyone responding to this thread might be interested in a second hand account written at the time of the trial and execution: ³There was a horrible case of murder Š in Chiddingly Parish. A middle-aged woman set her affections on a young carter who lodged with them, a mere lad, and poisoned her husband by putting arsenic in his Sunday pie. Within a month the carter requested his banns of marriage with the widow to be published. Mr. Vidal refused to do it. Suspicion being aroused; the body was taken up and examined, when enough arsenic was found to kill half-a-dozen men. The woman and young man were both committed to Lewes Gaol and tried for wilful murder. It was soon evident that the carter a heavy, loutish young fellow knew nothing of the matter, and, in fact had not been specially anxious to marry the woman at all. He was acquitted and the woman sentenced to death. Mr. Vidal attended her to the last; she confessed her guilt, but seemed otherwise a hopeless case. She was publicly hanged at Lewes, under very revolting circumstances. Her weight being too little to dislocate her neck when the drop fell, the hangman had to grasp her by the waist and swing his own weight with hers until she ceased to struggle. Poor Mr. Vidal was quite ill after this, and never could read the Commandments again without emotion. There was always a deep hush in the church while his low, trembling voice repeated ³Thou - shalt do no- mur-der,.² **************Start the year off right. Sarah Ann nee PIPER FRENCH (b 1825 Hellingly, dau Reuben PIPER and Sarah nee HOAD - April 1852 Lewes) poisoned her husband William's ( 1817 Chiddingly son of William, - Jan 1852 Chiddingly) Onion Pie with arsenic. They had been married for seven years and had one son James (b 1844 Hellingly). She'd "fallen in love" with James HICKMAN (b 1831 Chiddingly-1890) who was courting her sister Jane. William's brother John FRENCH was suspicious and put pressure on the Constable who had the body exhumed. Sarah was tried at Lewes, convicted of murder, and hanged three months after the death of her husband. She'd been known to have attended the trial of Mary Ann GEERING (Guestling Poisonings fame) and apparently got the idea from her! I believe she was the last woman hanged in Sussex. 2. Thanks Leslea! The article was in the Sussex Family Historian less than six months ago. Unfortunately, I am unable to lay my hands on it at the moment to cite the exact Volume and date, It was also the subject of Chapter 7 in "Sussex Murders". Unfortunately my source for this did not state the name of the Author but I believe it was David BRIFFETT (?). I have meant to order a copy and shall give it a go now. Incidentally, when my husband and I celebrated our 20th Wedding anniversary last year with a Party, I served Onion Pie (minus the arsenic of course!) along with an explanation and small bottles of "antidote" (sugar water). It made for a fun and interesting Party! Cheers and thanks! Joanne Joanne Mays Becker Sleepy Hollow, New York In a message dated 1/14/2008 4:32:50 P.M. 1. [SXP] TRILLs of Hellingly Sussex
2. Hello Listers! I am helping a cousin to research her family of TRILLs from Hellingly. Stephen TRILL married Elizabeth BURTON (b 1806 Hellingly one of the nine children of Edward and Mary nee REED BURTON) at Hellingly 12 December 1825. They had possibly 9 children before Stephen's death by drowning at North Street, Hellingly, in August 1837, aged 34. "In the family way" and with eight children, Elizabeth entered Hellingly Workhouse in July 1839. Shortly thereafter, she gave birth to a girl, Jemima, and discharged herself from the Workhouse. Jemima died on the 29th of September. At the taking of the Census in 1841, the following children were still in the Workhouse, although daughter Eliza (15) and son Obediah (7) were with Elizabeth in Seaford where she was working as a Housekeeper: George (11), Frances (10), Jesse (8), Naomi (7), and Peter (4). A section of the Admission and Discharge Register is missing (March 1840-March 1843) so it is not possible to ascertain when the rest of the children left the Workhouse. I was unable to find her son Trayton (b abt 1827) in the 1841 Census but he was back in the Workhouse by the taking of the 1851 and it appears he married Frances BIGNELL in MarchQ 1864 and lived in Hailsham with their children. I thought it might be of interest to see what can be discovered in the Workhouse records. We are trying to find descendants and trying to find Stephen TRILL's baptism which was not found at Hellingly. I have accumulated lots of information on TRILLs -mainly descendants of John and Hannah nee JENNER (Church of England)- which I would be happy to share. However, I have been unable to find baptisms for Stephen (1803), Trayton (1805 and would seem to be related), and Edmund (1810 and named sons Trayton and Stephen). Very likely they were Nonconformists. Although I found a baptism on the IGI for George TRILL (son of Stephen and Elizabeth) on 10 September 1828 at Zoar Street Baptist Chapel at Battle, the Register was not at ESRO. Does anyone know anything about the ancestry of these families? Any descendants? Incidentally, the story has a happier ending. Elizabeth remarried to Walter CAREY (toll gate keeper of Hailsham) in 1850 and she died at Cobden Place in Hailsham in 1885. Jesse and Obed (from whom my cousin descends) emigrated to New York in 1863 and marriage certificates are on order for the rest. Thanks for reading this and any help you're able to give!
