William HOKIN was born in Chichester, Sussex. circa 1790 and died from drowning in Perth, Western Australia on 17 Dec 1831. He moved to Hampshire prior to 1813 and with his wife and 7 children migrated to Perth on the ship "Parmelia" in which were transported the first settlers of the British Colony of Western Australia which arrived there on 1 Jun 1829. Is anyone researching HOKIN? Thank you Cheers, Bob in Melbourne
Hello List, Does anyone know if Hailsham had their own newspaper in 1872. My great grandmother left her husband and daughters in 1872, for reasons unknown to us. She went to New Zealand on the Himalaya with my gt grandfather. I wondered if there was a newspaper at that time and if it is on film? It crossed my mind her husband George Lavender may have put an advert in the paper looking for her. Then again, he may have thrown her out of the home. Also are there Hailsham Workhouse records on film. If so, were records kept describing the state of the person admitted. For example, three young girls, would the records state if the parents had deceased or missing? Regards Leslea Queensland. AUS No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Hi Leslea, East Sussex Records Office holds workhouse records http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Hailsham/Hailsham.shtml (scroll down to the bottom of the page). There appears to be a Hailsham Gazette http://www.solarnavigator.net/media/hailsham_gazette.htm - don't know how old it is but may be worth contacting them. Can someone tell me, on a marriage certificate in 1924. Does it give both the grooms parents. Regards Judy Beggs
Hi Judy Look sometimes when you first get started you have to bite the bullet and buy a few certificates to get a handle on the family. Your family are 1940's to start.....SO You do not have census data to search. All you have is family history, Births deaths and marriages (certificates) and Parish registers and some other things ............depending SO 1. collect everything your family knows & remembers about the parents, grandparents....everything. 2. Order a few pertinent certificates. ON the freebmd sites at rootsweb www.rootsweb.com is a good place to start to learn where to start. You can search but it will cost to get a copy of he cetificate Hopefully (like me) you pay out for a few and then the research gets easier...... 3. Brown is a very common name, so.....you will need to cross reference the certificates with census data as you go back further. People with access to Ancestry.com will I am sure help you with that (on this list) You really need to get onto rootsweb and learn how to start ......there is not much on line except Births deaths and marriges for that time frame UNLESS you are lucky enough to find someone tracing the same family on a site like this Crikey hon.....there is so much we can tell you.... Get a handle on the family first and then get back to listers. Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia > Hello List. > Started research for my children on the brown family. Just jumping in on this subject on a different line and wondering if anyone has found a link between the Packhams of Sussex and those in Kent. My lot come from the Medway area and I've always wondered if there is a connection between us. I guess it goes back a long way but I live in hope that someone has discovered it. If you are looking for a professional researcher, I suggest that you go to the AGRA web site and chose from their membership list - http://www.agra.org.uk . At least then you know that the researcher has some professional qualification to tackle the job. Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex
It's very difficult to get any information about anyone in the 20th century isn't it. I am trying to identify some old family photographs and find out if any others exist and also to find out what has happened to other branches of the family. So I am still looking for anyone related to my father's cousin Grace COX, born 1895 and living in Victoria Road, New Shoreham in 1901 and possibly in Shoreham or Bexhill in the 1950s. I am also looking for descendents of my grandparents' siblings. My grandfather was William BENTLEY, born 1875 in Angmering. His siblings were Mary Ann BENTLEY 1865, Arthur Ernest BENTLEY 1867, Harry BENTLEY 1871, Grace BENTLEY 1874, Agnes BENTLEY 1878, Kate BENTLEY 1882, Alice BENTLEY 1883 and Frances BENTLEY 1887 all born in Angmering except Mary Ann who was born in Patching. My grandmother was Louisa FOWLES born 1873 in Arundel. Her siblings, all born in Arundel were Edward FOWLES 1858 (half brother), Thomas FOWLES 1861, Anne FOWLES 1863, Elizabeth FOWLES 1865, Ellen FOWLES 1867, Eliza FOWLES 1870, Alice FOWLES 1872, Christine FOWLES 1875, Kate FOWLES 1877, Henry FOWLES 1879 and Lilian FOWLES 1882. Does anyone know anything of any of these people after 1901? Ron
Hi Joanne The GODDEN I have is Fanny born abt 1866 at Brookland, and married Herbert BARHAM in 1891 in the Romney Marsh District. No descendents of these two. I also have another Fanny GODDEN born abt 1868 at Peasmarsh, who married Herbert's brother William in Rye 1883. I have 7 children for these two. Very basic details but they may be of use. What is your GODDEN connection? My greatx4 grandmother Elizabeth GODDEN married John HONEYSETT in Dallington 16 July 1789 and after his death married William WALTER, also at Dallington, 5 November 1816. Elizabeth died in Dallington 26 April 1845 aged 78 (1766/67). She was the daughter of Joel GODDEN (b 1727 Brenchley Kent) and Elizabeth DOWNE (m Frant 19 October 1761). Other children were Joel (b 1762 but where), Mary (1764 but where), and Robert (1771 but where). The family was removed from Wadhurst SSX in 1767 and settled in Brenchley. Joel was a Hoopshaver, Cooper or Wheelwright. I don't know what became of the rest of the family. Cheers, Joanne In a message dated 1/17/2008 7:50:11 A.M. Many thanks to Anne Capewell - yes been there done that in that past and gone cross eyed trying all the permutations. Thanks again to Phil White who has helped me before with Henfield. It does beg the question as to whether a person could die without a death certificate being issued and no registration of the event and just buried in the ground (possibly consecrated) in some private burial location (they do exist all over the place) and the knowledge never passed on. Heavens above maybe my dear relative came to some untimely end. Now come on folks lets have some more thoughts. The Sun has just come out here in South Shropshire - the lull before yet another load of the wet stuff. Kind regards Mike Say

Is it possible to find these records????? If so I am trying to find the death of Thomas BUDD. He fathered a daughter Elizabeth b 1820 & possibly a son John b 1822. His wife Ann is listed as a widow in the 1841 census. As there does not seem to be a baptism record for the son I'm trying to find out if Thomas was alive at the conception of John. Thanks Barbara on another hot morning in NZ
