    1. [SXP] GRANTHAM Puzzle
    2. King Kong
    3. Hi, My Surrey GRANTHAM line seems likely to have originated from Sussex. Nationally it is not that common a name and there are only three main areas it occurs:- 1:- Lincs & Yorks where most GRANTHAMs can be found 2:- Bucks & Oxon 3:- Sussex & Surrey Looking at the Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1524/5 for Sussex reveals that the GRANTHAMs were centred on villages around Amberley, i.e., West Burton, Bury, North Stoke, Wepham, Storrington, etc., and seem to have been husbandmen and servants. They look like they moved up to Horsham and beyond in the 1600s. My line seems to have reached Rudgwick in the late 1700s. Does anyone know anything about this family? It seems a long way to have come for someone from Grantham, Lincs in the 14th/15th century. Could it possibly be a distortion of another name? There is a place called Greatham near to Amberley; there is also a Graffham not too far away and the surname GRAFHAM does occur in the same places as GRANTHAM in Surrey. Many Thanks, Kong _________________________________________________________________ Free games, great prizes - get gaming at Gamesbox. http://www.searchgamesbox.com

    3. Hi sandra Have you got the marriage entry from the Parish register? This would give the fathers at least. You might also find a lot more family. I was lucky with Arundel Ssx Parish register with my Parkers......they stayed there for abt 200 years. Got a whole tree from one PR. You never know and with a name like Parker I was extremely grateful. 1. Re: [SXP] LEPARD (or LEOPARD); Hamsey near Lewes
    2. King Kong
    3. Hi Nick, Sounds a bit too old imo. The IGI is good for getting an indicator of areas that your family were in in certain periods but can't be relied to pinpoint individuals. Some parishes have their records added to the IGI, others do not. There could well be another generation of LEOPARDs in a parish adjacent to Hamsey that do not appear on Familysearch. In addition have you checked variant spellings? Apparnetly LIBBARD, LIPPARD, etc., are all different spellings of the same name. I don't know if you have seen it but McKinleys "Surnames of Sussex" says that LEOPARD first appeared as a surname in Sussex at Laughton in the late 13th century. They appear to have been small free tenants and McKinley seems sure they all belonged to the same family. Hope this helps, Kong > From: Nick Leppard <n.leppard@dsl.pipex.com>> Subject: [SXP] LEPARD (or LEOPARD); Hamsey near Lewes> To: "SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com" <SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com>> Message-ID: <47928581.10102@dsl.pipex.com>> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed> > I thought I would repost this message as I sent it just after Christmas > when things were a bit quiet.> > I'm hoping someone might have access to the Hamsey Parish records to > check a marriage entry I have recently come across. 1. Re: [SXP] ANN BA(T)CHELOR Henfield
    2. Marion Woolgar
    3. I seem to have missed the early part of this thread, so please excuse me if I am covering previously trodden ground. Being unable to find a death registration for a person between 1837 and 1874 inclusive is quite a common problem. Although Civil Registration for births and deaths was a requirement from 01 July 1837, there was no effective penalty system in place. Birth registration cost money, baptisms were free and a Birth Certificate wasn't required to enrol a child in school, so it was an added expense that most families could well do without. Death registration also cost money, but you didn't need to have a Death Certificate in order to bury a person, so why have the expense of getting one - funerals are expensive enough without paying extra for a piece of paper that nobody really needs. It was not until 1875 that an effective penalty system for non-registration was put in place and, crucially in your case, a Death Certificate had to be produced before a burial could take place. The then fairly newly created burial authorities who ran the emerging network of civil cemeteries were also more stringent in their application of the rules than the vicars and parish clerks had been when burying people in parish churchyards. So, if the lady in question died between 1871 and 1881, then her death may well have fallen into this pre-1875 period and you will have a big problem finding her burial. I have countless lines of research which are incomplete because critical burial information is missing from the list of vital events and there is no death registration for them either. The heading of your E-mail indicates that Ann SAY nee BATCHELOR may have died in Henfield? If that is the case, then her burial should have taken place in Henfield Churchyard and the burial registers have been deposited up to 1900. Have you searched them already? Although there is a civil cemetery at Henfield, it didn't open until 1885, which appears to be too late for your needs. Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex

    2. mike say
    3. Thanks to Heather Brooks (you very kindly sent me this information more than a year ago) as well as information coincidentally provided by John White. I note that you show the name spelt BACHELOR although other information which I have shows it as BATCHELOR -common problem with how a name might have been heard at the time of baptism etc. I have this problem all the time with the name SAY. I am still at a loss as to next steps in finding a death entry for ANN SAY nee BA(T)CHELOR having exhausted every permutation that I can think of. This has included some fairly expensive searches of local Registrars records (minimum gbp 18 per attempt). Given that I have a positive identity, albeit incorrectly transcribed as LAY, of ANN SAY in the 1871 census as a widow, along with a number of her sons and no evidence of her presence in the 1881 census and a complete trawl of BMD records through to 1901 showing no entry for death or remarriage - what to do next. Any suggestions out there ??? Kind regards Mike Say

    1. [SXP] LEPARD (or LEOPARD); Hamsey near Lewes
    2. Nick Leppard
    3. I thought I would repost this message as I sent it just after Christmas when things were a bit quiet. I'm hoping someone might have access to the Hamsey Parish records to check a marriage entry I have recently come across. The entry I have is for Robert LEPARD who married Margaret BEACHE on 29th June 1591 (Family Search gives her surname as BRENCHE). Margaret is stated as being from Lewes. The reason I want to check this is that my most distant relative so far found is Robert LEOPARD (my 9th great grandfather) born 1529 in Barcombe who married Margaret? sometime! Margaret is said to be from Lewes. They had at least six children between 1576 and 1587. Robert died in 1606, Margaret sometime after. What I'm trying to establish is whether Robert and Margaret BEACHE are my Robert and Margaret or is it an amazing coincidence from that early period. Is the date 1591 correct? or should it perhaps be 1571? or did Robert and Margaret leave it late to be married. I'm assuming at that early period there would be very little further information on Robert and Margaret such as their ages. Any help much appreciated and always searching for any links etc to the LEPPARD name. Thanks in advance for any information. Nick Leppard

    3. I can't find exactly what you were looking for, but there is a baptism at Rudgwick on 26 Sep 1808 of Sarah HAMPSHIRE, daur of Henry & Mary. Perhaps that is a close enough match to HAMSHAR, given the phonetic spelling of the surname? Data from the PRTS transcript & Index of the Rudgwick PR's.
