    2. Sandra Shelley
    3. Hi, Does anyone relate to Frederick Baden Powell FRENCH? My reason for asking is, he is with one of my families on the 1901 census as "SON", but it's more likely he was a grandson, as the mother he is attributed to was 43 years old, and had been a widow for 6 years prior to his birth in 1900. If anyone can claim Frederick, I would be delighted to discover the true identity of his parents. Happy hunting Sandra Shelley Eastbourne Sussex

    3. Hi Phil, What if Samuel was married before and widowed? He was born 1777 and married 1811 to Mary making him 34 years old...?? That is another possibility. Making her Georges half sister. Have you done the PR's for Shermanbury? I can't seem to find a Dewdney / Ross marriage on freebmd though. 2. David Hopkins
    3. Hi Phil My mother's relatives include Elizabeth DEWDNEY , baptised at Warnham, Sussex on 12th Oct 1806, daughter of Peter DEWDNEY being the 4th of 7 children. It seems she married Robert WICKENS in Horsham on 22nd Sept 1850 and was buried in Horsham on 26th September 1851. Maybe a victim of late child bearing ? Robert WICKENS sister Mary Ann was my 3 x great grandmother. Shermanbury and Warnham are not a large distance apart. Is there any connection ? 3. Hi Phil, The name Dewdney may also show up as Dudeney on the IGI and in parish registers. I have Dudeney's in Henfield in the early 1600's. You might want to get hold of the Henfield records. You might find who you are looking for as it's only 2 miles from Shermanbury. Lorna

    3. Hi Steven Very, very brief background of these years. 1625-30 saw England at war with Spain and France. 1637 saw Civil war with Scotland, and then of course 1642 saw the outbreak of the English Civil War. If you check out your local library they may have something more specific to Sussex. Or to check out the 355 section which is on military history. 2. Phil White
    3. Yes Pam weve done the Shermanbury PRs, have a transcription myself so am pretty well informed on the Dewdney's born and married there, including my G Grandmother .Have also looked at SMI and only 4 Samuel marriages which included the one to Cowdrey, so I think the early bith to Mar is more likely Thanks for the thought anyway Phil White

    1. [SXP] DEWDNEY query & puzzle
    2. Phil White
    3. Hello folkss, hope all the detectives are awake and ready but here is a Dewdney puzzle Samuel Dewdney bn May 1777 at Shermanbury married a Mary Cowdrey 18 Nov 1811 at St Nicholas Brighton and we know they had a son George who married a Harriet Gates There was also a possible daughter Mary for Samuel and Mary, but here is the problem The 1851 Census HO107/1747F340p16 for son George which shows Mary, now married to an Un-named ROSS, listed in the Census as a sister age 50 or born 1801. If she is a sister to George then it would appear she was an illegitimate dau of mar Cowdrey, bn 10 years before her marriage. The other possibility is that she was a sister to George's wife Harriet Gates who was not present in the Census but was alive according to her death record dated Mar Qtr 1852. Harriet was of Sompting, and that is where she was married Would appreciate any and all ideas, help and look ups Phil White of New Hampshire USA Roots in Sussex & IOW

    1. Re: [SXP] Removal Order
    2. Barbara Harris
    3. I have found all the comments interesting. I have a 1831 removal of Ruth Budd aged 17 from Burwash to Lewes St Thomas at Cliffe. I haven't been able to gain baptism information at this time but her parents are mentioned so it seems likely she is connected to my Budd family. What I find curious is that if I am correct her family lived in Burwash although her father may have been dead by then. Any thoughts. These Budds are a proving to be a difficult brick wall to chip away at. Barbara in NZ
