    3. Hi Walter When you say you need help 'interpreting these certificates' what exactly do you mean? Difficult to read the actual words? Happy to help but we need to know in what way. Also many people on the list also belong to many lists and won't necessarily remember what the original 'help' request was. You may need to remind us. We'll do our best. 1. [SXP] Fw: Parish Registers; William (LEOPARD)
    2. Marion Woolgar
    3. I am happy to try and help where I can, but the search that you have requested could be a very long one and really needs to be narrowed down, otherwise several hours of research is likely to be needed. Ardingly has five contiguous parishes viz Lindfield, West Hoathly, Worth, Balcombe and Cuckfield. If the baptism isn't found in one of those, then taking the next concentric ring of parishes around Ardingly will involve a search of an additional 12 parishes, some of which are in West Sussex and some are in East Sussex. Secondly, William is a very common Christian name at that time and searching for a baptism without knowing his surname is likely to throw up a large number of potential candidates. You state that his potential parents are John LEOPARD & Catherine who married in 1691. As you have found the marriage, why is it that Catherine's Maiden name is unknown? Also, it is a tradition that a bride marries in her own parish, where was the marriage, please? That would be the first place to search for the baptism. Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick Leppard" <n.leppard@dsl.pipex.com> To: <SUSSEX-PLUS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 26, 2008 10:24 PM Subject: [SXP] Parish Registers; William (LEOPARD) A bit of a long shot but does anyone have access to the Parish Registers for the Parish's around Ardingly? I am trying to find the birth record of William born around 1690. We believe his parents may have been John LEOPARD & Catherine? However John & Catherine married in 1691 and all their children after this are included in the Ardingly Parish Records. One possibility is that if William was born before John and Catherine were able to marry did Catherine take him to a nearby Parish for baptism? Not knowing Catherine's surname does not help but if anyone is able to check the surrounding Records for a William born to a Catherine around 1690, it would be much appreciated Nick Leppard ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SUSSEX-PLUS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hi, I have no connection to this family, only the church of St. Peter and St. Paul, West Wittering. On the list of clergy on the church wall it says 1793 Roger Challice BA. I have the parish registers on fiche and the earliest reference I can find to Roger is 1798 on a marriage entry. He performed his last baptism in September of 1815 and was buried April 28th 1816, aged 70yrs old. If he had a headstone it is now sadly unreadable. A Samuel Hugh Challice was baptised there January 16th 1825 son of Samuel and Jane. Samuel was a blockade sailor. My family has links back to 1670 with this church which will be further strengthened when my first grandchild, Ellie, will be baptised there in March. 3. Please can anyone help? I am looking for anything about David Christopher Lewis born 1849 in Brimpton, Berkshire. I can find him on the 1861 census age 11 with his family in Thatcham, Berkshire but then he and his family disappear, until November 1920 when I have a marriage for him to Caroline Rose Wills aged 65 a spinster (and relative of mine) in Canada. He is a widower aged 71. Caroline Rose sailed over from England on her own (I have the passenger record) to marry him. David's mother is listed on the 1861 census as a Methodist Preacher - could this be a clue - have they gone abroad as missionaries and is there anywhere I can find out? I know this is a long shot but any help or suggestions much appreciated. Caroline Rose Wills's father was born in Chichester, but I don't think that is any help on this occasion. Trish

    3. Hi Anji, nice to hear from you. Thanks so much for the look ups. Unfortunately It doesnt help much does it, unless I can find the birth/baptism of Susanna. William and Susanna were my 3xGt Grandparents. I am descended from their daughter Martha b 1838 and she was the sister of Mary Ann b1846 who married Frank Blann. No, I agree, The IGI isnt very reliable when they are not the original extracts.
