    3. Hello list, I believe it was simply a polite way of addressing a letter. I don't think there were undertones of aristocracy or wealth, those people would probably have 'proper' titles. It was used quite a lot a number of years ago, but seems to have died out now. Regards Geoff

    3. Perhaps you could find out what the person's occupation is given as in the census. I would take "esquire" as an occupation to mean someone who didn't work but received an income from investments or land. I think in a census their occupation would have been shown as "independent means" Ron Andrew Billinghurst wrote: > On 27 Jan 2008 at 23:39, Walter Morgan wrote: > > >> I googled the term "Esquire" that was on a Marriage Certificate from 1906. >> I came up with a term denoting social status. 1. [SXP] Death: Brighton General, Home: Thornton Heath
    2. Valerie
    3. Hello to all, I'm new to the list and wonder if anyone can tell me how I might find further information. We have just found that my gg uncle died at Brighton General hospital in 1849. It looks as though the address on the military papers states Thornton Heath as his home address. If he died at Brighton , where would his grave likely be? Are Brighton and Thornton Heath reasonably close? The other query is would there likely be any newspapers on line for that period in the area so as to source death notices? Apologies, if there are too many questions, we are not very skilled researchers. Kind Regards. Valerie, Aust.

    3. Any help in confirming (or refuting) that the three references below to a residence called TANYARD all pertain to the same place would be greatly appreciated! 1) From Thomas Rowland Hooper published A Surrey and Sussex Border Church; Reminiscences of Old-Time Baptist Assemblies at Turners Hill, Horley, and District 1650 to 1840 (Thomas Rowland Hooper, [Stanley L. Hunt, The Printeries, Rushden, Northants], 1925: "The places of the executive and Quarterly Meetings were for many years chiefly at Turner's Hill (from 1727 to 1759 at Griffle English's house). After about 1752 they were occasionally held at Bro. Dodd's, Hollylands, Horley; at the *TANYARD*, and at Thomas Streater's, at Enhams, also once or twice at "Colinden." After 1766 Richard Holiday's House, Cogman's Burstow, alternately with Mee (Meath) Green was used till in 1771 some "Scandlus Reports" connected with the former led to the meeting of Dec. 4, 1771, being transferred to Shepherds, Outwood. After more than a century the Church was provided with a Meeting House, erected in Horley Row... It was occupied from 1760 to 1791... After 1791 it became a dwelling house... An annex with an oven was erected and for over hundred years a baker's business was carried on and the place known as "The Old Bakehouse." In 1920 it was sold and renovated and is now a private residence. Of those at Horley the *TANYARD* was long since closed and the house rebuilt. Collinden, a farmhouse near Horse Hill, and Enham, perhaps "Inholm" near Harrowsley, have remains. Hollylands seems uncertain; its reputed site is near Horley lands on the Balcomb Road, where is yet an ancient house.” 2) From Google Maps: Tanyard Russ Hill Rd Charlwood, Horley, Surrey RH6, UK <http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=tanyard ,+horley,+surrey&sll=51.279958,-0.211487&sspn=0.187694,0.44014&ie=UTF8&ll=51 .156766,-0.230412&spn=0.011762,0.027509&z=15&iwloc=addr&om=0> For other residences cited in the exerpt above above, please see my customized Google map: <http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&gl=us&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=1042936327031 08193753.000442f0f14a388d5af5c> 3) From http://www.dbrg.org.uk/charlwood.html: Tanyard Farm c1600 TQ238410 Smallhouse,2.5 bays including smoke bay, with earlier truss forming rear wall Thanks for your help, Perry Perry Streeter (mailto:perry@streeter.com) http://www.perry.streeter.com

    1. Re: [SXP] SANDERS in E. Grinstead and Felbridge - also Charlwood
    2. Jack Sanders
    3. Hello all: I've been off list for a couple of years and have been "lurking a bit". I've already spied some familiar friends and names. I am interested in contacting any descendants of the SANDERS and some related families of East Grinstead. My bunch (CAREW SANDERS) left for America in the early 1850's after residing in the East Grinstead area for about 300 years and I have been fairly successful in tracing our tree back to a WILLYAM SANDERS, born in Worth in 1586. My research interests are: England: SA(U)NDERS and CHART, E.Grinstead, Worth, Ssx; and Felbridge/Lingfield, Sry, pre 1500 - 1850 Also related families of BYSSHE/BISH pre 1500 - 1850, Worth, Ssx and Horne, Godstone, Sry and TAYLOR, BUTCHER, FENNER, PAYN(E), same time period, in and around E.Grinstead. Place names: ROSE COTTAGE and GULLEDGE of E/G & Felbridge. USA: CAREW SANDERS, St. Louis and Mississippi, 1875+ HENRY SANDERS and WILLIAM H. SANDERS, Clay County, KS 1870+ and West Palm Beach Florida, 1890 + One great interest of mine is attempting to find a link between the Charlwood Sanders and the East Grinstead Sanders. So far - no luck - but the Carew name is intriguing. Kind regards and it's good to be back. Jack Sanders, Eureka, Kansas Website showing family tree: http://ackshunjackson.com/page2.html

    1. [SXP] Harry Colbourne or Randall
    2. Anne Capewell
    3. Hi all, This is a bit of a long shot - and a bit complicated so please bear with me. My ggrandmother was Alice Terry b1863 who married William Pratt. In 1891 they are living at 20 Conway St, Hove with children John 8, William 6 and Florence 4. In 1901 Alice Pratt is a boarder at 23 Suffolk St, Hove. She is boarding with Henry Colbourne 49, Charlie Colbourne 16, Charlie Baker 44 (also a boarder), and her children John 18, William 16, Florence 14, Percy 11 and Herbert 8 (actually Hubert). She is described as married as is Henry. I have also traced Henry's family - he married Ellen Bridger and was with her in 1891. My grandmother was born in November 1902 - although she was always unsure of her actual year of birth. It wasn't until my mum and I started looking into the family that we noticed that my grandmother was christened Dorothy Victoria Colbourne Pratt. This got us thinking and the more we have looked into it the more we are convinced that she was the illegitimate daughter of Henry. Henry died 11/04/1902 at 23 Suffolk St and Alice was the informant. We cannot find a positive death for William Pratt - nor find him in 1901. We also cannot yet find Ellen Colbourne in 1901 although we know she was still alive. What I have found is the military records of one Harry Colbourne b1882 who was one of Henry and Ellen's children. When he signed up aged nearly 19 he gave his name as Harry Randall. In 1901 there is a sworn affadavit from him to say that this was a mistake and that his real name was Harry Colbourne as indicated by his birth cert - he had obviously been asked to produce it for some reason, possibly because he was about to marry. All of his other records confirm that he was indeed the son of Henry and Ellen. If anyone is still with me <g>, the questions I now have are: Why did Harry call himself Randall? I assume that he wanted to distance himself from his father but why Randall? I cannot find that his mother remarried. Where was Ellen in 1901? Where was William Pratt in 1901 - or when did he die? I hope that someone can solve this little mystery for me. We will never be certain that Henry is my ggrandfather but the circumstantial evidence is growing! BTW - Colbourne is spelt many different ways but I have just stuck to the most commonly occurring one here. many thanks in advance, Anne _________________________________________________________________ Telly addicts unite! http://www.searchgamesbox.com/tvtown.shtml
