Jacqui Thomas Dudney's wife, Martha Attree, was the oldest sister of my children's ggg grandfather Thomas Attree b1799 Cowfold. Thank you for the additional information about Thomas. Much appreciated. Small villages are great, I agree. Thomas was the brother of my 5x g gf John DUDNEY (bap as DUSNEY in W Grinstead in 1763) - but it's always helpful to have other corroboration of events. Most of the LEPPARDs and NAILARDs you refer to were also related to each other. Small villages are great!!! Thanks again, Jacqui

Hello Jacqui I collected some information that may or may not be of use to you. Martha Attree born c1784 in Shermanbury, married Thomas Dudney (born c1762 in Sussex) in Cowfold, Sussex 1813 Their children were born in Cowfold: Ann Dudney b1814, married George Durrant in Cowfold 1854 Mary Dudney b1816, married William Leppard in Cowfold 1837 Sarah Dudney b1819, married Henry Ward Nailard in Cowfold 1845 Caroline Dudney b1821, married Thomas Nailard in Cowfold 1848 Thomas Dudney b1823, married Rebecca Leppard in Cowfold 1853 Samuel Dudney b1825, d1844 Martha Dudney b1827, married Henry Nailard in Cowfold 1854 Diane in Montreal -----Original Message----- From: sussex-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:sussex-plus-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jacqui Bell Sent: February 3, 2008 4:39 PM To: Sussex Plus Subject: [SXP] Posting Sussex interests As I haven't posted here for a while, I thought it would be useful to re-post my interests. A bit of detail on my Sussex surnames with a couple of specific requests to follow as my original message was too long to be posted (3rd time lucky I hope): DEWDNEY & DUDNEY (also DEWNEY, DUNEY, DUNY etc) The same bunch from primarily Shermanbury / Henfield as Phil White's. KNAPP Thomas KNAPP b. cir 1783 in Carshalton, Surrey, probably the one bap. 23 Aug 1783 son of Charles & Sarah. Married Mary MASON in Twineham 1806 (thanks again MW!) and had 9 children born in Twineham or Shermanbury - probably! Sons George & James had very extensive families, the latter in Woodmancote. HEASMAN James b. cir 1790 Ardingly (IGI has 2 of this name baptised that year...) married Mary LUNN in Henfield in 1816. They had 6 children. Am I likely to find a newspaper or coroner's report on the suicide of Alfred HEASMAN in Henfield in 1881? Apparently he drowned himself & an inquest was heard. BANFIELD One of the large families in Ashurst / Woodmancote (do the various families link up?), currently headed by William who m. Mary GROVER 1733. WELLING Sarah bap 1794 Upper Beeding, dau of William WELLING & Ann GODDARD, both b. Upper Beeding. RICHARDSON - Ann m. John DUDNEY 1787 in Hurstpierpoint, d. 1789 Shermanbury. Don't know anything more about her. Also: Sarah COBBEY b cir 1738 possibly W. Chiltington m. William "DUSNEY" 1763 W Grinstead. Ann GIBBS, dau of Thomas GIBBS & Jane BLUNDEN, m1. Philip NAYLARD m2. William DUDNEY 1732/3 Cowfold. FreeBMD has a Lucy Blackman born Dec qtr 1842 at Brighton. The IGI has who I think is this same Lucy bapt at St Nicholas Brighton 16 Jan 1843 d/o David & Sarah Ann. FreeBMD has a marriage for a David BLACKMAN to a Sarah Ann MESSLEY Mar qtr 1843 at Reigate 4 304, 12 Mar 1843 according to the IGI. Nothing on the IGI that I can see for Lucy MESSLEY other than her marriage to David STUNT. Looks like she may have used both the BLACKMAN and MESSLEY names at different times. Ian C
Hell. I have ALFRED J MORBEY as marrying ELIZABETH J. SKINNER September/December 1921. registered Brighton. Has anyone got this couple in their family line? Thank you. Lucy's birth is before her parents' marriage, if the information below is correct. I have found that historical people in this situation frequently use either of their parent's surnames. Could that be the situation here? Chris On 02/02/2008, pamhillier <pamhillier@iprimus.com.au> wrote: > > > > FreeBMD has a Lucy Blackman born Dec qtr 1842 at Brighton. Hi - I'm trying to find birth details for Lucy. She married David Thomas STUNT in Hove in 1879 and 1881 Census shows her age as 38, born in Brighton. However, I can find no record of her birth c1843 or for several years either side of that date. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated Thank you. Jean, NZ

Hi Ian that matches the census data I found for Jean I would imagine Perhaps it's Lucy Messley Blackman???? Definitely Blackman on the 1861 and Messley later though....... Interesting. Could she have married a cousin On her mums side and been widowed? Then married STUNT I have a few of mine do that. Some way to solving the puzzle at least Jean PR's for Brighton might be the go, but so many Churches. Good luck, need us you know where we are Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia > FreeBMD has a Lucy Blackman born Dec qtr 1842 at Brighton. Census data sent off line Hi Jean from across the pond. I have found her on the 1871 census as a servant. No sign of her on the 1861 but shall keep looking. 1851 there is a Lucy Blackman born 1843 Brighton. Methinks she might have married Messley - been widowed and remarried hence not being able to find her birth. So go to freebmd and find the birth, find a marriage between blackman and messley, the death of her husband and that will more or less prove my theory. Hope this helps. Still having a hunt Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia > Hi - I'm trying to find birth details for Lucy.
