    3. Hi Ann, If you look at www.old-maps.co.uk and www.streetmap.co.uk you can work out the location of Market Street on the Victorian maps. This is another good site http://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/page_id__5996_path__0p115p210p703p.aspx. Or http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~genmaps/genfiles/COU_files/ENG/SSX/cooper_bton_1820.html - you should be able to save the image and enlarge it. If you search on The Lanes Brighton or Maps of Brighton you will find a fair amount online. Many of the buildings are old but have changed over the years. If I remember my local history correctly (bearing in mind this is many many years ago!!) the Lanes were created out of the 'laines' (or pathways) between the strips of land created by medieval strip farming - but don't quote me on that <g>. hth, Anne > From: barmenz@bigpond.net.au> To: SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com> Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2008 09:22:44 +1000> Subject: [SXP] Hove/Brighton 1843> > Would 7 Market Street, Hove (which I think was a boarding house) in 1843> show up as Market Street,Brighton on current maps? 1. [SXP] William Streeter
    2. Bob Cunning
    3. Hello from Australia. William Streeter was born at Mountfield,Sussex, on 21 June 1842, was a miner and migrated to Australia with his brother Henry on the "Lady Milton" which arrived in Sydney on 28 June 1862. William died in Brisbane on 22 Jan 1931, aged 88. William's parents were Edward and Rebecca and the 1851 census shows the family living in North Trade Workhouse, Battle, East Sussex. Rebecca was dead by this time. The 1861 census showed that Edward had married Eliza (?surname) and William was living with his sister in Folkestone. William married Margaret SHERRINGTON (1856 to 1905) at Gladstone on 23 Dec 1880. Is anyone researching this STREETER line? Cheers, Bob in Melbourne

    3. Hello. Would a very kind person who is going to the Records Office be able to do a look-up for me. I have been searching for some time now to find out what happened to a relative by the name of VICTORIA RICHARDSON nee SKINNER. She married Arthur Edwin Richardson in 1926 and was widowed in 1929. It appears that she left her in-laws address when Arthur died and went back to live with her parents in Grosvenor St. Electoral Registers do not show her after 1930 as there were so many Mrs. Richardson named with no initials. Too many for a searcher to go through. All info seems to have stopped at that date. The two remarriage certs. I have sent for were the wrong ones which made me back to square one again. Thank you in anticipation. April. New Forest

    3. Hello Diane I'm sorting out my GAWEN file and have just come across a very old email from you. I've seen messages from you on the List in recent times so trust you are still as involved as ever. I've also found your name and address among a list of researchers sent to me by Peter Gawn back in 1997 (over 10 years now!). He mentions that on your line Anne GAWEN of Hastings married John COOKE. I'm wondering, all these years later, how your Anne connects to my Elizabeth, William and Jeffery. Do hope to hear from you. Cheers Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia

    2. Gordon Lickfold
    3. There seems to be some anecdotal evidence of marriages at Potsea between parties from quite a distance away. Marion Woolgar cites one in 1735, and the Bentley / Stone marriage took place there in 1836. In my Lickfold families I have 3 such marriages: 1834 bride and groom lived at Lurgashall, West Sussex, but described as "of this parish" 1849 bride and groom lived at Haslemere, Surrey, but PR gives an address in Portsmouth 1862 bride and groom lived at Haslemere, Surrey, but PR gives an address in Portsmouth Does anyone know whether St Mary Portsea was 'famous' for such marriages? Maybe the clergy there were quite happy to turn a blind eye? 3. Thank you all for the information provided. The Stephen Bentley in Angmering in 1910 was my greatgrandfather. My Bentley ancestors and cousins have lived in the Angmering and Poling area from as far back as I have got so far (late 18th century) until the second half of the 20th century. There may well be branches of the family still living there that I am not in contact with. 3. Hi Ron My Arundel lot.....Seagraves + Parkers were in Arundel for 200 years. Well the Parkers were and the Seagraves travelled around ALOT. Starting in East Dean and other places, Bury, Fittleworth, Chichester, Portsea and on it goes. BUT My James Seagrave's 2nd marriage was in Angmering. They have an online site - searchable and a wonderfully helpful man that runs it. There's Bentley's on there including a Stephen BUT in 1910. Parts of Angmering are on the Arundel road I think.....so it's a starting point. http://www.angmeringvillage.co.uk/ ALSO Doing a parent search of the IGI has some Bentleys born Poling. But I suppose you have them. IGI has a marriage in Portsea Hants. Quite a lot of my Sussex lot ventured to Portsea and Portsmouth etc......not a big stretch. Supposing that one of them worked there, then the marriage would occur there. There's an online site with PR's for the area called Knightroots, have not got the addy to hand. Not much help but a few ideas. Cheers Pam from Adelaide Australia >I am trying to find a record of the marriage of Stephen Bentley to his > second wife Mary Ann Stone. 3. There is actually a bit of "history" about people from Poling slipping off to Portsmouth to get married in secret. I copied the following item out of the Poling Parish Registers back in 1999, just out of interest and thinking that it might come in useful some day! My Latin isn't very good, but here is my very rough translation: Henry Blaxton and Elizabeth Storey of Arundel were married, so they say, at Portsmouth in the County of Hampshire on the Eighth day of October in the year 1735. But Henry Blaxton and Elizabeth Storey were actually married in the parish Church of Poling in the County of Sussex on the twenty sixth day of February in the year 1737 [1737/38] by me John Storey Vicar of Poling aforesaid. So, it looks as if it might be the Vicar's own daughter who claimed to have married Henry BLAXTON in Portsmouth and her Father didn't believe her and married/remarried her himself in his own Church, just to be quite sure!
