    1. [SXP] Brockbank and Volckman
    2. Graham Price
    3. Hi all I am looking for anyone with connections to the above-mentioned surnames. In particular, a John Christopher Brockbank b. 1869 who married Christabel Volckman b. 1867 at Hackney. They were married at Westmoreland 1898, had two children by 1903, Stanley Teesdale Brockbank 1899 and May Christabel Brockbank 1903 - both children born at Wrexham, Denbighshire where John was a bank manager. John's parents were the Reverend John Brockbank and Mary Agnes Brockbank, nee James of the Startforth rectory. Christabel was the daughter of William Volckman and Elizabeth Volckman nee Yeomans, and she wasborn in Hackney in 1867. The Volckman family were confectioners and lived in Essex as well. I know this is a little out of the way, but anything is worth a go trying to find what happened to John, Christabel and family. They vanished off the face of the earth after 1903. Being a bank manager he would have travelled to any county. Any clues? Cheers Graham Alas, from that time the whole family seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Can't find them anywhere, even on overseas listings.

    3. Sorry. A little off-list. But anyone who has been having research problems with the State Library of Victoria, Oz, please contact me OFF-LIST. Some recent problems are that many overseas (or even some home-grown) students have been taking almost complete control of the writing desks so that serious gen researchers have nowhere to go and like me sometimes give up and go home, fed up with it; also darn slow downloading of Ancestry.com census images 14-20 minutes not unknown though normal 4-6 minutes download time, and the horrendous sqwarking, squealing of the chairs on the marble floor, all of which has been going on since the year 2004 without any closure, all items of which were given promise (absolute promise) to me by a SLV executive person in April 2007 that this would be fixed. Ahah, ahah, ahah. Not really. Little, if anything, has been fixed. Love to hear your comments. I am at present considering presentation of these long-standing problems to the Victorian State Parliament. And am also proposing the sacking of the CEO or her willing retirement. The SLV Board of Management just does not seem to be listening. Not a\t all, in any way, shape or form. Though they certainly give support to lots of PS. And I might add, a number of the SLV Librarians who do all the ground work agree with me! Work that out! Graham Graham Melbourne Oz

    3. I didn't mention any churches in Chichester at all. I did refer to the parish of St. Peter's, Brighton. Yes, I quite often visit the excellent Knightroots web site when I need information about Southern Hampshire, but unfortunately they don't yet seem to cover the 1735 period for Portsea St Mary marriages. 3. Hello Ron: Perhaps Portsea/Portsmouth is not such a suprising place after all, especially if they didn't want people to know about their wedding. My great great grandparents, James Piguenit Parker and Sarah Wright, both from Chichester families and who had lived all their lives there, were married in Portsea in 1839. The story goes that they eloped as Sarah's father was not happy about the match. When I found their marriage certificate, I wasn't surprised he was unhappy as Sarah was just 18 and James 20, even though they both said they were of full age on the certificate. The marriage took place after banns were called and so they had managed to hide away for at least three weeks before the marriage took place - the only family witness being one of James's sisters who was obviously in on the act. 3. Hi Ann No. If memory serves correctly, Market Street, Hove was just on the Hove side of the former Brighton & Hove boundary, to the south of and parallel with Western Road. Possibly it started out as mews serving the back of the houses in Western Road, before they became shops. In the 1960s there was a garage servicing cars & a model railway shop (Bradshaws who moved there from the Lanes in Brighton when Martins Bank Chambers was built.) Unfortunately I have no idea what has happened to the area since leaving Brighton in 1976. Market Street, Brighton is in the old centre of Brighton running from North Street/Castle Square south past the Town Hall to Kings Road on the seafront. The southern end by the Town Hall, is now pedestrianised. In 1843 it was the home of many fishermen but no more. The area, though still lively, is occupied by cafes, businesses & offices. Hope this helps. 3. There certainly are particular churches which seem to have a reputation for slightly "iffy" marriages, if not clandestine wedding ceremonies. Brighton, St. Peter is probably the best known one in Sussex and I think that the then enormous size of its parish meant that its clergy were just too small in number to make proper enquiries of the couples who presented themselves for matrimony. There was also a large transient population moving into Brighton searching for work and that also made it very difficult for the clergy to know their flock. However, it isn't always the huge parishes who attract this kind of "trade". The parish of New Fishbourne, just outside Chichester, has a reputation for clandestine marriages in the late 18th Century. Certainly when I looked at the registers myself, they did seem to show a very large number of people from outside the parish. St. Mary's Portsea probably had a large population of transient workers. Men, in particular, would be attracted to the town to work in the Naval Dockyard in the huge factories set up by Brunel in 1802. What puzzles me about the marriage of Henry BLAXTON and Elizabeth STOREY is that the marriage at Portsea apparently took place in 1735, which is so very early for suspect marriages of this type. Portsea, St. Mary is apparently on the IGI for the period 1666-1773, but the BLAXTON to STOREY marriage does not appear and I have not been able to check the registers myself. So, perhaps after all the Vicar of Poling was right to assume that the marriage never took place and to supply his own special remedy to suit the occasion! What I find equally interesting is that the marriage at Poling on 26 Feb 1737/38 doesn't appear on the Sussex Marriage Index, although it does appear on the IGI. Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex
