    1. [SXP] Strange GADD will reference?
    2. bob campbell
    3. Came across this reference on the LDS website today, of interest as I have ancestors from around West Sussex etc. surname GADD from the 18th century. Has anyone seen a reference to the will of Henry GADD of Birdham dated 16th September 1770? As I am in Australia I was most intrigued by the birth of this same Henry, entered by the anonymous submitter of this entry :- ie 1730 Sydney, NSW, Australia!! Maybe dear old Henry could have saved Captain Cook the trouble and expense of discovering the East Coast as our dear Henry's parents were already there!! But back to being sensible, as this will must have been sighted and not a complete work of the imagination, would there be a reference to it somewhere? cheers Bob in Brisbane

    3. Dear Kathy, John and Jane Knowles were my Great-Great-Grandparents. After they married they are found in the 1841 to 1861 censuses in Arundel at different addresses. In 1871 there is just John living with my Great-Grandfather, Arthur, so presumably Jane had died by then. I do have lots of information about the Knowles family, so if there is a strong link with you, please let me know. Kind regards, Norma -------Original Message------- From: Heather Brooks Date: 02/24/08 19:27:35 To: kebaker; SUSSEX-PLUS@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SXP] Sussex Marriage Index lookups Hannah Baker, spinster married with consent of her father Thomas to Thomas Young, 24yrs, bachelor, husbandman both of Petworth. 2. LeeAnn McNabb
    3. Greetings from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - where it is cold, overcast and everyone's yards and driveways are covered with a sheet of ice. Ahh....winter:). I just joined the list yesterday. I am looking for my ancestor William Gibbs, born approximately 1766 and he married a woman by the name of Elizabeth. Unfortunately I do not know her surname for sure, but I have been told the name is Fuller. The first child of this couple that I am aware of was born in 1793 so I would guestimate they married around 1790 (+ or - a few years). He had the following children in Sussex County before leaving in 1818 to make the trip to the United States: 1. William, b. ~1793 2. John A., b. ~1799 3. Spencer, b. ~1800 4. Stephen, b. ~1803 5. Levi, b. ~1805 (this is my line) 6. Ann, b. ~1810 7. James, b. ~1812 8. Jane, b. ~1814 William Jr., John, Spencer, Stephen and Levi were all naturalized in 1828 in Baltimore, Maryland. I am not quite sure why James was not, but he was only 16 in 1828 so when his father naturalized in 1825 (and he would have been 13) he may have automatically received naturalization through his father. It was on this naturalization that I found that their place of birth was Sussex County, England. I would be interested to know if a William Gibbs was married in the 1780s or early 1790s to an Elizabeth. If anyone else on the list recognizes this family please do contact me (most of them ended up in Menard County, Illinois, USA). I am leaving open the possibility that some of the older children stayed in Sussex (note the gap between William and John) or they had children they buried before leaving Sussex (there is another gap as well between Levi and Ann as well). Thank you very much for your time and consideration.LeeAnn McNabb Cincinnati, Ohio, USA

    3. Hello Marion and Yvonne Years ago I was looking at the film of the Wiggonholt registers at WSRO. Near the beginning of the tape is a note that says that Wiggonholt was probably one of the parishes that was popular for clandestine marriages. Quite a few of the couples marrying there pre-1754 were both from other parishes, presumably they weren't asked too many questions. One of the couples in those days was in my tree, they were both under 21 and from Pulborough but the register doesn't say they were minors. They went on to raise a family at Parham rather than returning to Pulborough and the man was disinherited by his father despite being the first-born. 3. Problem 1: There is this marriage: Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index: Place: Ashington, West Sussex, Date: 5 Nov 1777: Subject: John MERRITT Spouse: Imlen GREENFIELD However, Imlen seems a very unlikely Christian name and there is also data missing from the Index. A marriage at this date should give marital status and residence of both parties and the names of two witnesses. So, there is obviously more data to come from this entry and the Marriage Register will need to be checked. Problem 2 Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index: Place: Wiston, West Sussex, Date: 1 Dec 1772: Subject: William MERRIT Spouse: Mary PERCIVAL, botp (B) This has the benefit of being in the same parish as the baptisms that you have already identified. However, once again there is data missing from the Index, so the Wiston Marriage Register needs to be examined. Problem 3 The marriage to Martha BUNN was by Licence: Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index: Place: Archdeaconry of Chichester Marriage Licence, Date: 17 Oct 1726: Subject: John MERRIT, Houghton Spouse: Martha BUN, otsp An examination of this Licence may reveal how long John MERRIT had been living in Houghton, or his occupation. Once again, data is missing as there should be at least two sureties to the Bond, one of which may be the Groom. Also: Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index: Place: Wiggonholt cum Greatham, West Sussex, Date: 17 Oct 1726: Subject: John MERRET, Taughton (sic)(Houghton) Spouse: Martha BUNN, Houghton (lic) I wonder why they went all the way down the valley to marry at Wiggonholt, when it would have been more convenient to marry in Houghton Parish Church? Did they have family there? Looking for Wills is always a good idea. Do bear in mind that, for the Archdeaconry of Chichester there are two pre-1858 Will sequences - the period to1800 which has been indexed and published by the British Record Society (vol 49); and the period 1800 to 1858 for which there is an unpublished Index at WSRO. PCC Wills are also worth checking and you can do that online at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline . Its very easy to forget Administrations. They are sometimes only a few lines long, but an Administrators name will be included (often a family member), where the person lived and you will either have a date of death or the Administration date from which you can search for the burial. Chichester Administrations to 1800 have been indexed and published by the British Record Society (vol 64); those for 1800 to 1858 have an unpublished Index at WSRO. I believe that the Will and Administrations indexes, both published & unpublished, have been filmed by the LDS, so you may be able to order the films via your local Family History Centre. Finally, if you are doing a lot of Sussex research, it would be a good idea to purchase a copy of the Sussex Marriage Index as it can save you a lot of wasted time. Its especially useful if you are researching either in East Sussex or in the mid-Sussex area where coverage on the IGI is very sparse. You will find the details at http://www.sfhg.org.uk/smi/smiinfo.html . Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex

There is a strong possiblitiy they may have been travellers/Romanies/gypsies and intermarried with name changes and inconsistency in census returns. Best wishes to all, Jackie jackie wing <jackiewing2000@yahoo.co.uk> wrote: Please can anyone help find a marriage for Isaac Stanford to Mary ? in either Horsham or Beeding. Issac was born in Horsham in 1793. Mary was born in 1789 in Beeding. Many thanks Jackie --------------------------------- Sent from Yahoo! Mail. 3. Thanks Mike. It appears that he may have married twice, to 2 Mary Shephards as there is a marriage for 1812 also! : I am alos looking for the mysterious marriage of their daughter Emily Stanford/Rawlins to an equally mysterious John Smith/Lovekin. I have seen on the gypsy list that the names Lovekin and Stanford were possibly gypsy names in Sussex. Isaac was a broom maker, although appeared to give the same address on the various censi. Emily and John's children called themselves Lovekin and Smith and give a range of different Lovekin father's on their marriage certificates. What a mix-up!
