    1. [SXP] Sturts of Rudgwick
    2. Ros Dunnico
    3. Thank you to Tess and Marion for sorting out the two marriages of Thomas Sturt in 1802 and 1898 in Slinfold. I am still trying to find his baptism about 1779 in Rothersfield. His place of birth is from the 1851 census and may not be correct. I have had some progress with the other Thomas Sturt bap 1770 in Billingshurst. His parents were Edward Sturt and Rachel Longhurst, they married 1756 in Rudgwick ( found on IGI under HURT). I found a Settlement order in A2A for Edward STIRT and Rachel when they moved from Rudgwick to Billinghurst but no date. It appears that their first 5 children were born in Rudgwick and 3 more in Billingshurst including Thomas in 1770 who moved back to Rudgwick and Slinfold. There is burial of Edward Sturt in Billinghurst in 1789 and a will in Chichester RO for an Edward Sturt of Rudgwick in 1790. I shall have to order a copy of the will to see if it the same Edward. To go back another generation, I need to find an Edward Sturt (Stirt) born about 1730 in the Rudgwick area, or knowing how they tended to move about it could be anywhere. I have checked all the usual online sources so can anyone local help, please? Clues to his father or mothers' names in his childrens' names : Edward, John, Leah, Rachel,Sarah,William and Thomas. Thank you again for your help. Ros.

    1. [SXP] LOOKING FOR INFO ON RICHARD WESTON
    2. Jane and Dick Howard
    3. I am a new listee and have been trying to trace back the parents of my gr gr grandmother, Mary Martha Weston, born 23 Feb 1818 in Burwash, SX but moved to the USA with her family. Her parents were Richard Weston born 1797 (Richard and family appear in the 1850 census for Cleveland Ohio and Richard's age is stated as 53) who married Martha Westover 4 Apr 1817 in Burwash, SX. They had nine children: Mary Martha b) 23 Feb 1818 in Burwash Elizabeth Sarah b) Dec 1819 in ???, SX Leatitia b) 21 Jan 1822 in Burwash Stringer John b) abt 1824 in Burwash Thomas Westover b) 19 Dec 1828 in Bermandsay Jane Ann b) 24 Jun 1831 in Brightling Lydia A. b) 21 Sep 1833 in ??? (date from family records) Matilda b) abt 1835 in New York City, USA (from census records) Henry H. b) abt 1839 in New York City, USA (from census records) They must have immigrated to the US between Lydia's birth in 1833 in England and Matilda's birth in NYC in 1835. The only one of the children who apparently did not immigrate with the family appears to be Stringer John who does not appear on any records that I can find in the US (he does not appear on any census records) - perhaps he died before the family left England. I have been looking for Richard's birth records and am searching for his parents. The family appear to have been non-conformists - Presbyterian - so perhaps that is why the COE records do not contain any reference. I have found good records for my gr gr gr grandmother Martha Westover and her family but have not been able to find any trace of Richard's birth or family. Can anyone help me find Richard's family? Dick Howard, East of Cleveland, Ohio, USA

You will need to check the Parish Register to be sure. If you live at a distance from WSRO, I could check this baptism entry for you. However, you will need to be patient for a short while as my next intended visit there is not until 15th March. Best wishes Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex

    3. Hi Ros - That's the only Mary I could find around the right date. I have learned that the IGI is not always that accurate. I noticed the name because I have an Edward HAWKINS from Stopham in my tree who married Elizabeth STURT in 1737. 2. Phil White
    3. Hello Folks, I am back working on my WHITE tree and trying to find the parentage of my "Brickwall" one Henry WHITE who has been sitting at the top of my tree for far too long From the data I have collected it seems likely he is one of the 11 children born to Richard White and Sarah Penfold at Maresfield between 1678 and 1693 They had 2 sons named Henry so I have assumed the one I am looking for is the second Henry baptized Feb 27 1686. I am in hopes someone has access to the Maresfield Registers who can verify all the children of Richard and Sarah, and any deaths recorded SMI shows Richard and Sarah Penfold as being married at Worth, 26 Sep 1676 but there does not seem to be any children baptized there So I live in hopes that Sussex Plus can come up" Trumps" again Phil White in New Hampshire USA where we are breaking records for snow fall this year (if you would like a photo or two let me know.)

    3. This is not really on the list but I have hit a brick wall and really need some help. I have a relative, William Charles Hoaten, who was in the BSAP (British south African Police) ie British police in Southern Rhodesia. I am not sure of the exact dates but his employ is at least from 1908 - c.1955. By 1931 he was a , W.C.,R.S.M., S.R.V. I have no idea what this means... He also fought in WW1 where he was a Lieutenantand received a medal. He died with the rank of a Major in 1955. Can anyone suggest where I may be able to find out more information about him? Is there any British military organization I could approach? As Rhodesia was a British colony during the time he was in the police force, I am hoping that some British based orgainization may hold some information - getting information out of Zimbabwe in nigh impossible at the moment. Many thanks Michelle Essers Israel

    3. Michelle, There is a very active group of ex-BSAP people out there that should be able to help you out. Their website is www.bsap.org. They also have several discussion groups on yahoo, one of which is dedicated to the history of the BSAP. The main intent of the groups is to act as a forum for ex-BSAP members but they will allow outsiders (such as myself) participate from time to time. I am distantly related to Col William Bodle who was the first commisioner of the BSAP. If you would like, I can post your query to their mailing list (just send me an e-mail of list if you would like me to do that). Regards Mark Milton PS It is the British South Africa Police rather than the British South African Police. He is living with his grandparents both times. By 1871 he has married and I can also find him in 1881 and 1891 if you would like the images. I think his birth may be Sept qtr 1846 Cuckfield vol 7 p333. This would find his parents so may allow you to find them in 1841. It looks like they may have died by 1851.
