I am hoping someone may be able to help me find which newspaper may have carried the report of an inquest, held in February 1965, following a suicide, which occurred in Bexley Heath, in January 1965. I have found the 'Kentish Independent' mentioned for 1946 but am not sure if this was extant in 1965, or would have been the appropriate publication for that time, or area. Any help, or advice would be greatly appreciated. Helen Shipley
Thanks to those who contacted me re the burial at Petworth. My maths had gone completely skewiff when I originally posted, the year of burial should have stated 1801/2 not 1791/2. So my apologies for that! The burial record has now been found. Thannks to those who contacted me and made suggestions of possible burials. Kindest regards, Jon
Jon was asking ... 'Some time ago, a very kind lister sent me the burial record of a William HABEN / HABEN etc around 1791 at Petworth. I can't seem to find that record now and I was wondering if someone had access to the Petworth burials that would be willing to give me the information once again.' ............... According to the SFHG burials index there was a burial of a William HABEN at St Margaret, Eartham on 26 Mar 1797. Could this possibly have been the record to which you were referring? Duncan, Dundee

Hi there, I have searched my Petworth burials CD and can find no William Haben or indeed anything close between 1790 and 1800. I then searched the whole file for Haben and could find no matches. Are you certain it was a Petworth burial? Hi All, Gloria has provided a link to a super site which deals with listed buildings. However I don't believe this is an official English Heritage web site, and may not contain the descriptions of every, and photographs of most, listed structures in England. You need to verify listings at the National Monuments Record site - under Images of England (IOE). "Gloria's" site has a link to IOE. Open the link. Click onto "Useful Links" at the right hand side of the top menu. Then under the heading "Other links to Listed Buildings & Architectural Heritage click onto the Images of England link. ------------------------------ > > Message: 2 > Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2011 10:29:09 +0900 > From: gloria ishida <[email protected]> > Subject: [SXP] 12 Liverpool Terrace > > Liz, > > See > http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/england/west+sussex/worthing > > =:>< SNIP. > > Gloria > > -- Richard Brown Bromley, Kent U.K.
I seem to recall the name of Tindell as a solicitor, in either Liverpool Terrace or Liverpool Gardens, Worthing, back in the 1960s. Could this be your family? Jill

Another 25 parishes have recently been added to the FreeCEN database of the 1871 Census for Sussex, thanks to the hard work of our team of volunteer transcribers. If you are looking for ancestors around Framfield, Isfield, Singleton or Westbourne it may be worth searching at http://www.freecen.org.uk/, even if they haven't appeared in other transcriptions - it's free to do so. Over a third of the 1871 Sussex Census has been transcribed by FreeCEN volunteers since the start of last year. More volunteers are always welcome as we try to complete the rest! Happy hunting! I would like to add to my request about a child's birth being registered without a name and in my case with Henry Thomas Blake born in 1851. I can now tell you that the un-named Blake male child registered in 1851 is one of my family. His given names of Henry Thomas were added after registration and appears so on his birth certificate. Many thanks to everyone. Maz Perth, Western Australia
Hi Liz, I'm not sure that all 'preparatory' schools in the 19th century were what we would now consider a prep school to be. I haven't searched extensively on the internet but there seem to have been 2 definitions at that time - our current one and a more literal meaning of being a school to prepare pupils for the next level of eduaction. I don't know if any other listers have any other information - I'm sure there are plenty with more knowledge than me! Alternatively could he have been visiting? hth, Anne From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [SXP] Liverpool Terrace Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2011 21:34:09 +1100 Hi Anne, Thank you for your reply. I don't think that my family could afford to send their son to a"preparatory school" He was at sea at age 18. Charles Wilmot Jemmett at 8 Liverpool Terrace owning or running a 'boy's school' Miss Anna Tindell and Miss Edith Oppler at 12 Liverpool Terrace owning or running a 'preparatory school' There may be more but I have only looked at a few hits. Liz, See http://www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/england/west+sussex/worthing No "click on available" but the addresses listed by Anne since all of 1-12 Liverpool Terrace is listed as Grade 2, that are usually residences, the "schools" were probably run out of the residence of the "head". Also found "Liverpool Terrace c.1830 was built as an elegant bow-fronted terrace of homes over looking a small park." Again when you google 12 Liverpool Terrace Broadwater Worthing Sussex The google maps comes up right way click on and see a beautiful photo of No. 12. t hope you enjoy seeing the above and adds more about your family. Gloria
Hi Everyone, I have just joined this list and hope someone can help me. I have just found a cousi of my grandmother on the 1891 census RG12/836 . The address is 12 Liverpool Terrace Broadwater Worthing Sussex. It appears to be a school of some sort. There is a head, partner, tutor and 17 students listed. I am hoping that some one has heard of this place and can tell me what type of school it was. Thany you Liz
Hi All, I wonder if someone might have access to the parish registers of Upper Beeding please! A good friend found the banns of a wedding of JOHN HABINS to ELIZABETH POLLARD, from the family search I found that the marriage took place on 15th October 1761 at Upper Beeding, near Steyning! I would love the details, and the names of witnesses, as this will help so much! Many thanks and best wishes, Den

Thank you to Helen, Frances and Heather for trying to help me with my query. I now realise what I posted was wrong. But William was definitely born abt 1824 in Hastings, Sussex to parents William Oak and Phillis Knight. They did not get married until 1827 though. So I am still looking for a baptism of William Oak/Oakes around 1824 or later. Any help would be appreciated. Kind regards Judy
hi I am researching the family of Moses Merritt born 1805 in Sussex and Mary Ann Goodger (they were married 1841 in Sussex Any help on this family is welcome, Ruth Australia
I have a William Oak b abt 1824 in Hastings, according to the different census'. I have found a Christening in Arundel on 11 July 1824 with the correct parents. Does that sound feasible. I don't know much about places other than Hastings. What would be the distance between those two places. His parents were William Oak and Phillis (Phyllis) Knight, but were not married until 1827. Does anyone have a copy of any earlier Census ie before 1841. I know there were some but don't know what they would tell you. Any help would be appreciated on this one. William was my 4th Gt Grandfather. Regards Judy Berntsen New Zealand

There's a fascinating article about the outbreak here; http://www.longweb.f9.co.uk/longshot/volume_4/the_worthing_typhoid_epidemic_of_1893.html Although no names given of the dead there are some mentions of those who were ill and wondered what had happened to 'visitors'.
