Hello Listers I have, with several ????, a Henry WINGFIELD baptised at All Saints' Hastings on 20 Jun 1821, possibly the s/o Edward WINGFIELD and Maria née BRIDGER. At some time I must have had a marriage connected, but have somehow now disallowed it (can't remember!), as there is a note that in 1857 Henry was a Fisherman of Courthouse Street, Hastings, Sussex at the time of his son William's baptism! Any light on this Henry would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia.
Does anyone have this man in their family tree, please? Francis Westall FARRANT was born on 27 April 1866 and baptised on 17 July 1866 at Llandudno, Caernarvonshire and he was the son of Robert & Mariana FARRANT. Francis and his two brothers, Henry and Percy were educated at Repton School and then on to Oxford where Francis initially studied at Trinity College whist his two brothers were in New College. Francis married Edith Watson PIKE in the autumn of 1892 and shortly after that they moved to Worthing where they lived at Belmont in Tennyson Road and started a school. On 10th July 1893, Francis died in Worthing of typhoid fever. His daughter, Edith May FARRANT, was born in Malvern, Worcestershire in the autumn of 1893. Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex [email protected]
Martin RIDDLES, junior, was baptised 16 Jan 1859 at Heene, the son of Martin & Barbara. He married Mary Georgina GATES on 16 Nov 1878, also at Heene and had 4 children, Frank 1884, William 1886, Ellen 1888 and Frederick 1891 (all approximate dates). Martin, junior, and his daur Ellen died of typhoid in 1893 and are buried at West Tarring. Martin's sister Ellen (born 1856) and his son James (born 1881) were both buried at Heene in 1893 and it is beginning to look as if they may also have died of typhoid. If so, this family paid a high price during the summer of 1893. Is anyone is researching this branch of the RIDDLES family, would they please contact me at [email protected] ? Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex
Hello Karen Are you 'out there'? From some Lancing Memoirs I found on line, you live (or did live) in Rustington in Sussex. A cousin (8th once removed!) and I are currently sorting out the WINGFIELD branch of our PHILLIPS line. Frances is your cousin too - 9th once removed - your ancestor in common being John PHILLIPS (1612-1667). I'm related to you in 3 different ways - 5th cousin twice removed (Robert PHILLIPS: 1711-1755), 7th cousin twice removed (Richard FAUTLEY: 1643-1693) and 12th cousin once removed (Thomas FAUTLEY: c1510-1556). I think we may have been in touch years ago as I have some info on my data base with your name as the source, but I've lost your email address. Would you be able to contact me please? We'd like to check out some info with you and may even have some info for you. I look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks. Cheers Pam Beaudesert, Queensland, Australia
Do you have any "RIDDLE" in your family tree? Most of mine came from the Herts/Bucks/London area so there might not be any connection Thanks - Judy > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2011 17:54:01 +0000 > CC: [email protected] > Subject: [SXP] Martin RIDDLES > > > Martin RIDDLES, junior, was baptised 16 Jan 1859 at Heene, the son of Martin > & Barbara. Am back on the list after 5 years away and wonder if anyone is researching Gatrell's from Lewes. I am particularly interested in a Stephen Gatrell and a George Gatrell both of whom were sentenced at the Lewes Court on 22 July 1850 to transportation for larceny. Cheers - Brenda in Australia
Thanks to Nivard for his usually useful and cogent reply. I'll work on that. Terence

Is anyone researching the Lane family of Horsham? In particular a Frank Lane who died in 1915 or 1916 aged 23. Thanks, Hilary
Hi Terence There are 811 William CARTERs deaths registered between 1851 & 1861 84 in 1856 Unfortunately age at death was not recorded in the index then There were four William CARTERs deaths registered in Camberwell , 1 in 1852 & 3 in 1854, although he may have been away from home when he died, deaths should be registered where they occurred I admire your optimism re him leaving a will, when you compare the amount of deaths, very few left a will You say he was a bootmaker? do you know if he traded on his own account, far more worked for another person and even if he did have his own place he is likely to have passed his stock to a son or relative rather than declare anything, if he left no will and did not own property, his wife and family may well have sorted his affairs with no further paperwork Death duties only kicked in at a certain level so he may have left a sum below the threshold Have you tried the PCC wills on the National Archives , it seems unlikely but worth checking If he left a will 1858 onwards it should be recorded in the Calendars of wills, the 1858 to 1861 are not as yet on Ancestry Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > I have an ancestor who died between the 1851 and 1861 censuses. I have an ancestor who died between the 1851 and 1861 censuses. An undocumented family "tree" lists his death as 1856. In the 1851 census he and his family were living in St. Giles, Camberwell. I have not found a death registration or death duty will for him which is strange because he was a bootmaker and must have had some stock in trade. Where and how do I look for a will for him: William Carter (1811-c. 1856)? Of course, maybe he didn't die. He just abandoned his wife and family. There's a scary thought. Thanks, Terence Golden, Colorado in the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains
Hi everyone, Is there anyone on this list who could be related to these people. Mary Knight TURNER who married John Reynolds MITCHELL 12th December 1953 at St. Lawrence Church, Bidborough, Kent. I have their wedding book which gives the names of their parents, their bridesmaids, there is a guest list, names of the choir, and there are many pages of names with descriptions of the wedding gifts given and where the gifts were bought. No photographs. I would like to reunite this with the family and would just ask for a contribution to the postage costs which would be £2.00 to a UK address. If overseas, then cost would higher depending where. Jane
Hi Andy, Anne and Daryl Thank you so much for confirmation of that address. I had looked it up on Google and found a place in Australia with the same name, but nothing for Sussex, hence my query. Good work on your part, it just didn't sound right, although that is what it looked like. What a great list for you all to come to the same conclusion as I had. Kind regards Judy
Could someone please try and decipher the name of the Cottages for me on the 1891 Census. It is on RG12 Piece 758 Folio 78 Page 9 for a George and Emma Charlton. They are down the bottom of the page. I need their address please. It is 6 --------Cottages, Sandown Road, Ore, Hastings, Sussex. Find My Past have it as Orroroo Cottages, but I am not really sure if that is correct or not. Many thanks. Rendezvous of the Magpie Upon the naming of the town, aboriginal names were said to be considered. Three names were sent in and Orroroo was eventually selected and the township was proclaimed. Over the years many discussions took place as what the name meant. Examples were such as 'wind in the trees' or 'dust, wind or any rapid movement'. One man Frank Warwick, of Holowiliena Station, was well versed in native lore, asserted that Orroroo meant 'the rendezvous of the magpie.' Hi Neil Time frame is all important which unfortunately you do not give but I assume its post WW1 ? Have a look at the research guides on the National Archives under British Army http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guide-listing.htm#b Depending on the era you may find his service records are not released as yet Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Where is the best place to search for service records of a Major which I presume is the Army. > Found this person who could be a ancestor of mine, found it in an old telephone directory. > regards > Neil Maryan
