"How much does the course cost? The full cost of the course is £1980 for UK based students or £2240 for overseas students. " Apart from the internet there are many excellent books. Check out your local library (save it from closure!). Or, what I suggest to many readers is to check out the stock of Hatchards or Waterstones to see the actual content, and cross-reference with your library catalogue. Or even try Amazon and the readers reviews to give you some idea. Hi Cathy I have no idea what the IHGS course entails but suspect its probably no more than you can find out yourself Their site does not seem to want to divulge the cost for some reason Try a good book like Ancestral Trails You might also check out the free online courses available from the LDS http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp There are quite a few, on various Countries I have seen the ones for England and would recommend them If only as a precursor to more in depth courses Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > This isn't strictly a Sussex question, but I know a lot of the members of > this list are very knowledgeable and may be able to help. Hi, This isn't strictly a Sussex question, but I know a lot of the members of this list are very knowledgeable and may be able to help. I want to increase my knowledge of genealogy resources available and have also been thinking about "going back to school" so I did some searching around for possible courses that would challenge me and allow me to continue to research my own family history [spare time is at a premium in a house with 3 kids]. I found the IHGS course on the internet and wondered if anyone on this list had any knowledge or experience of it or the IHGS in general. I would also be interested to find out how others "learnt" about family history research tools. Thanks Cathy
I have just found a marriage between a Edwin George Herriott in March 1929 to a Dorothy E Rice at Steyning. I an researching a Dorothy A (Dolly) Rice (1897) of Steyning and was wondering if it might be the same lady. He parents were Albert and Emily Charlotte Rice and they live at High St, Steyning which was a Harness and saddlery shop. They was also a brother Albert Edward (1893) who I think took over the business, but I cannot find a marriage for him. Also another sister Eva Maud (Edith) (1901) who I think I have found living in Brighton up until 1968 and then in Horsham until 1981. I found this from Ancestry phone book listings. I am hoping that someone is researching the Herriott family of Brighton and have Edwin in their tree and might be able to tell me if I am on the correct "branch" as I have come to a halt with this family Looking forward to a reply Ann (NZ)
Hi, Go to www.theweald.org On right side list of names click "Cat" The see at top, births before before 1700, Find several Nicholas's. The father born/christened there 1579 in Rotherfield is verified as being in the church records.Clicking on his name you will come up with some "trees". However, his son whom you are seeking has a different birth date and this comes from an individual's records, so this may be the same information that you found on family search. The 1579 Nicholas' marriage date would fit the son's birth but that info is again from the same person's records. another thinthigg is that siblings were born in different places, it might do well to see if all of these are in the same vicinity; could happen if Nicholas had such work as suggesting this. I would also suggest you check http://www.mandywillard.co.uk/surnames/catt/family.htm Mandy has some interesting speculation that might help. Also google "Nicholas Catt b 1615" and all kinds of info comes up; probably probablynothingnothing more that what you have but who knows? But actually the BEST is to go to a Family History Center or if none near you send out a request. The library in Utah has microfilm that can be rented by order of the Westfield parish records from 1540. Hi All, Wonder if any of you have come across the marriage of Harriet Budden to James Lock on 29th October 1872, Westbourne area! She is my great great aunt, and i would love to know more! Many thanks, Den
Hi Folks, Yoyur resonses to my Query relating to finfing my sisters birth plave were all very helpful, particularly one reply that including a Google street view of the house. I keep forgetting what a tool that is. There was one un-expected result when I tried to Goggle 20 Malham Rd Forest Hill which was the birth place of my parent's first child. As I worked along the map until I was viewing Malham Rd the blue line just stopped partway along Malham Rd and obviously there were no houses at that point. I have assumed 20 Malham Rd was either rebuilt after WW II, bomb damage maybe, or just plain modernizing Any Comments Phil White
Edith May FARRANT was the daur of Francis Westhall FARRANT and Edith Watson PIKE. She was born towards the end of 1893 in Malvern, Worcs, possibly on 17 Sep 1893, her father having died of Typhoid fever in Worthing shortly before her birth. She married Donald Brackenbury ROSS, an officer serving in the Indian Army, on 07 Feb 1917 at Thanet, St. John, Kent. The only likely death registration that I can find for her is in Dec Qtr 1970 ref Sturminster 7c 369. Donald Brackenbury ROSS was a career soldier and rose through the ranks to become Colonel of the 8th Bareilly Infantry Brigade, Indian Army. He was born on 22 Aug 1882 in Cape Town, South Africa and retired from the Indian Army circa 1935. He was awarded the Croix de Chevalier in 1918, the military OBE in 1924 and the Order of the Star of India (CSI) in 1935. He may have died in circa 1962 in the Hastings area of Sussex. The couple had only one known child, Donald ROSS born in 1918 in or near Upton-on-Severn, Worcs who may have died in Feb 1992 in Canterbury Registration District. If anyone has encountered this family in their researches, would they get in touch with me, please? Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex
Can anyone please confirm that there is a Nicholas Catt b/chr 1595 in Westfield or Rotherfield. His father is meant to be another Nicholas/Nycholas chr 1579 in Rotherfield. I can find no record of this christening on the Sussex Family History Baptism Indexes for Nicholas. Is there anywhere else I should be looking. I did find a submitted entry on Family Search but I know the person who submitted the information has a lot of information wrong, and it is not the exact date, just an abt one. Many thanks for any assistance. Regards Judy Berntsen New Zealand
Hello Meegan I too have a family who came to Australia on the "Florist" in 1839 and there is a co-incidence between your family and mine. Richard **SMITH aged 42 was on board with 2 sons Joseph aged 16, James aged 10 and daughter Mahalla aged 14. Richard's wife Lucy had already died. Lucy's maiden name was RANSOM Lucy had previously been married to Edward **PIPER. Do you recognise Lucy? Could your Dorothy and Lucy have been related?
