Hi Ruth, don't know if it was a Sussex term but according to http://www.chiddinglychurch.org.uk/churchguide/churchguide4.html THE CHURCHYARD is bounded by a low post and rail fence which was completely renewed by subscription in 1990, as it could no longer profit by repair. It had served for over 200 years, carrying the initials of 56 local landowners and farmers who had contributed units of 'one set of post and three rails' according to acreage held. These were known as "Church Marks". The new fence of solid oak was fashioned, as of old, without the use of a single nail. Four gates, a kissing gate, a stile and all the rails are stamped with the initials of today's donors, some of them now occupying the houses and land where the ancient contributors once dwelt. hth, Anne > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Wed, 30 Mar 2011 18:20:38 -0400 > Subject: [SXP] Ambrose GALLARD > > Searching "Google books" turned up a reference to my 6x Gt-grandfather > Ambrose GALLARD of Wivelsfield, Sussex. Hello Listers, I am hoping someone has access to the Twineham ParishRegisters and can look at a baptism of Henry White Jul 20 1777. I would like to know if the parents are listed to confirm that it was Henry White and Sarah(Mitchell) Phil White in New Hampshire USA Roots in Sussex and IOW
Searching "Google books" turned up a reference to my 6x Gt-grandfather Ambrose GALLARD of Wivelsfield, Sussex. Amelia Emily Russell born Worthing 1888 married Archie Miles at 1913 June Qtr. East Preston 2b 683. They had three children all born E.Preston viz. Frederick H.Miles b.1914, Marguerite A.N.Miles b.1916 and Thomas A.Miles b.1917 and died in 1917. Archie was killed in France, also in 1917 and never saw his son Thomas A. Millie, as she was known, lost her husband and youngest child in the December Quarter of 1917. She was then 29 and left with two small children. >From that time I cannot find anythig else about her. She may have needed to re-marry but I cannot see a marriage for her. She may also have died but I cannot find her death either. She was living at Broadwater in 1917. Does anyone have any information at all about her or her two children please? Joe Emery
Hi Phil A lot will depend upon the time period but as you don't say when you are trying to find your mariner its hard to advise more Be aware that not all mariners or seamen were enumerated so you may not find him but if you give more detail perhaps we can advise better Although a little dated now the following gives some information on the subject http://www.mariners-l.co.uk/UKCensuses.html Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Folks, Can anyone give me some advise as to how I find a mariner in a > Census. > I have two in my tree and always bypassed them as I never seemed to be > successful in the least > Phil White
Hi Listers, I was wondering if anyone was tracing the UNDERWOOD family of Sussex and surrounding areas. I have traced back as far as my 6th GGfather William not sure where or when he was born but was married to a Rose VAUGHN in East Grinsted. They had 8 Children. If anyone is researching the UNDERWOOD branch I would like to hear from you. Thank you Nicci
Hi Listers, I would like to thank every one who assisted with my 1911 problem, and I now have all the data I can reasonably expect. All of you are the most helpful folks and it is totally appreciated Phil White
Hi Folks, Can anyone give me some advise as to how I find a mariner in a Census. I have two in my tree and always bypassed them as I never seemed to be successful in the least Phil White
Hi Phil, Perhaps posting the names of interest - may be helpful - some may across the name/s while researching * or attempt to help you with your search. Have you found the connected family;s When you search. Is there an area - that might say - residence / at sea /? There may be a separate research area for persons at sea - as well perhaps prisons - workhouses etc. May be worth checking, cheers, Stella At 06:29 AM 27/03/2011, Phil White wrote: >Hi Folks, Can anyone give me some advise as to how I find a mariner in a >Census. >I have two in my tree and always bypassed them as I never seemed to be >successful in the least > Phil White > >------------------------------- >To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to >[email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without >the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

Hi Phil The only source of the 1911 census at present does not allow look ups Moreover anyone doing so may risk their subscription being cut off The only other way would be for someone to pay for your page out of their own pocket which I am sure you would not want at the price they charge currently You can do so yourself of course Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Hi Folks Can anyone please help me with a 1911 Census report for the > following > In the 1901 Census are the following living at 58 Vicarage Lane West > Ham St Matthews > James R Sole age 33 bn Essex Stratford > Eliza Sole wife age 32 bn Henfield SX > John E Johnson age 7 adopted son bn Preston Lancs > Ref RG13-1565F50p3 > Question are the couple still there in 1911 and is John E Johnson > with them ? > Eliza died Feb 03 1912 and I have no idea what happened to the > adopted son > > Thanks for all past help Philip H White of New Hampshire USA > Roots in Sussex and IOW which I will be visiting in June

Hi Phil The records are at the National Archives and I suggest you look at the Research Guides from this site. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm Ancestry.com have been releasing Military Records from Discharge Papers (WO97)and these would probably cover the period you are looking for. Please note that if a soldier dies while in service there would not be a discharge record. Also the Coldstream Guards are the 2nd Foot Guards and this is used for example by thr LDS in their catalogue. Gerry You are correct that WO97 (Chelsea Pensioners) covers the period that is needed - however they are on www.findmypast.co.uk and not Ancestry. Ancestry have WO363/364 - the Burnt documents from WW1 Regards John Hanson -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Gerry Doyle Sent: 23 March 2011 05:52 To: Phil White; Sussex List Subject: Re: [SXP] Finding Military Records Hi Phil The records are at the National Archives and I suggest you look at the Research Guides from this site. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm Ancestry.com have been releasing Military Records from Discharge Papers (WO97)and these would probably cover the period you are looking for. Hi Folks, Can someone advise me of the best way to attack this problem In my Tree I have a George White, bn 1862 in Brighton and I found him in the 1881 Census at Wellington Barracks of the Coldstream Guards and would like to find his record or at least more than just the Census. Which is the best way to go at this Phil White
High Folks, I posted a question about the surname of MARTIN a few days ago and thought I should do so again. I did have one response that did not help, probably because my first post wasnt perfectly clear What I need is access to the Slaugham PRs to get actual baptismal dates for the children of John and Sarah Martin who claimed their children were born in Slaugham, and were so listed in the 1841 Census. I hope someone has access to these PRS. Tried Paris Chest but they do not have a CD Phil White
>From Weekly Journal or Saturday's Post ( London, England ), Saturday, August 5, 1721; Issue 140. They write from Sussex of the 29th July, that a Party of Brigadier General Grove's Regiment of Foot had been in quest of Several Smuglers and Owlers on that Coast but that they all made their Escape, excepting one Jacob WALTER , a Ringleader amongst them, whom they took under a Bed at an Alehouse near Battle, and carry'd him Prisoner to the said Town, from whence he was brought hither on Wednesday last, and committed to the Fleet Prison. N.B. For anyone interested in the History of the Kent & Sussex Smugglers, there is a very good book available, called " Smuggling in Kent & Sussex 1700 - 1840 " By Mary Waugh. ( I have no connection to Mary Waugh, nor the publishers of the book, & only mention this as I have a copy & have enjoyed reading it. )
