    1. [SXP] Help needed with deciphering a will - John F ELPHINSTONE died 1854
    2. Chris Farrington
    3. Hi All I have downloaded a will for JF ELPHINSTONE who died in 1854. He was buried in Brighton. It appears that he was visiting for the winter. He was from Lingfield in Surrey where he owned Ford Manor (which he bought in 1826) My connection is that my ancestor Sam FORD (1851 census,) Samuel Ford HAYES by 1855 (marriage) was one of his servants. Sam Ford HAYES was born in Nanking China c1828. According to information regarding Elphinsone he left part of his estate to his Chinese servants, including Sam FORD. One of Samuel Ford Hayes gransons has the name Elphinstone as his middle name. I am finding it very difficult to read the will. If anyone is able to help I would be most appreciative. It is a 9 page document. It is now 10:15 pm here in NZ so I will be offline until tomorrow morning (NZ time). Please reply off list if you can help me. Cheers Chris Farrington

    3. Hi Brenda You can take a look yourself you know :-) If you go to googlemaps and enter the address Whitley Road Eastbourne it will bring up a map of the location You will see a little yellow man on the +/- bar of the left of the map, use the mouse and drag him onto the map where the red balloon is which shows where the road is As you drag him you will see blue outlines to roads that you can use streetview on Drag him onto the spot and release, it will take you to a street view of the road and you can use the arrows to take a virtual wander up and down the road There has certainly been some redevelopment at one end but many older houses still exist, the ones I have seen appear to be late Victorian or Edwardian so may be the 1901 houses you are interested in Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) PS one word of caution in all the above, do check if the Whitley Road was renamed at any point in history or is in the same place as was in 1901 > Hello > > The 1901 census shows my grandparents living at Homeland, Whitley Road, > Eastbourne. Is there anyone who knows Eastbourne who could let me know if > there are now houses on this street that would have been there in 1901. > > Hopefully > > Brenda

    1. Re: [SXP] SANDERS in E. Grinstead/Felbridge 1600's - 1850's
    2. Jack Sanders
    3. Hello, listers Time for my annual inquiry re: descendants and/or ancestors of the SA(U)DERS family who lived in the area of East Grinstead/Felbridge area. My g.g. grandfather CAREW SANDERS was born in E/G in 1804 and was a shoemaker there. He married SUSANNAH CHART SANDERS from Lingfield around 1822. They had 13 children and the majority of the family went to America in early 1850's. His old shop is now the World of Fishes in Felbridge. An uncle, also Carew, occupied the Gulledge in the 1830's - 40s, with prior SANDERS occupying same perhaps as early as 1680's. I can trace my line of SANDERS back to mid-1600's maybe earlier in the area. SANDERS family members also associated with Hedgcourt Mill and Star Inn. Would appreciate any contact with others working this family line or any links between my SANDERS and BYSSHE/SHELLEY connexions. Cheers, Jack (John E.) Sanders, El Dorado, Kansas. Research interests: England: SA(U)NDERS and CHART, E.Grinstead and Worth, Ssx; and Felbridge/Lingfield, Sry, pre 1600 - 1850s. Also related families of BYSSHE/BISH pre 1500 - 1850, Worth, Ssx and Horne, Godstone, Sry and TAYLOR, BUTCHER, FENNER, PAYN(E), same time period, in and around E.Grinstead. Place names: ROSE COTTAGE, GULLEDGE, STAR INN, HEDGECOURT MILL of E/G & Felbridge. USA: CAREW SANDERS, St. Louis and Mississippi, 1875+ HENRY SANDERS and WILLIAM H. SANDERS, Clay County, KS 1870+ and West Palm Beach Florida, 1890 +

    1. [SXP] HICKS
    2. Pat Thompson
    3. Hi. Was hoping if someone would be able to do a couple of lookups for me when they go to Lewes. I am looking for the baptism of WILLIAM HENRY HICKS between 1880-1885 at St. Philips church, Burwash Weald. I have information that there is more than one William Henry baptised around this time. Also I am looking for the marriage of either MIRIAM SALLY HICKS or SALLY MIRIAM HICKS I have found on the 1881 census a Miriam S Hicks married to JOHN ROBERT EDWARDS but have been unable to find a marriage. I have found a Sally Miriam Hicks marriage to JOHN ROBERT THOMPSON reg Sept qtr 1880 I think this marriage also took place at St. Philips church, Burwash Weald, as it was registered in Ticehurst. I would love the details for this marriage. Thank you for any help. Pat

    1. [SXP] Peter, Maria and Caroline WEST in West Tarring
    2. Joan
    3. Hello. One of the records found for me was a baptism for Caroline WEST, June 1853. She appears in the 1861C age 8, with parents and siblings. The parents for all children are shown as Peter WEST and Maria. But still no definite record for her birth in National Records to tie in with that. There is the fact that Peter and Maria CHIPPER were married in Dec 1852 and Caroline was baptised June 1853. There are bmd records for many WEST families in Brighton District. Some of these are for those at Keymer. There is a Henry WEST and another "Maria" in Keymer with a family. An "odd-bod" is a Caroline WEST birth Sep qtr 1851 ref Brighton 7 295. She could have a sister Hannah Maria WEST born June 1847. Ref 7 295. She can't be the child of Henry and Maria in Keymer 'cos they had William Henry WEST born Dec qtr 1851. Is there SKS who has found another Caroline WEST in the 1861C, aged 8/9, not in Tarring but probably in Sussex, I'd love to know where she is, please. Or should I just assume her birth was not registered - it happened. If only there hadn't been that family story of some connection with the SACKVILLE-WESTS! Thanks for reading. Joan.

    1. [SXP] SFHG Open Day
    2. Joan
    3. Hello. Went on my first visit to a SFHG Open Day. Very interesting with tables representing many Family History Societies. Also other organisations to interest "other halves" such as postcards, maps, stationery for storing paper records, local history books, booklets about a number of trades and occupations in the 1800's and 1900's; a duo with newly formed service for restoring old pictures of every description and mounting them in superb albums for future generations. The stewardship was impeccable. Refreshments for the weary. As a lister advised, I did contact them for help in my search for Caroline WEST's birth. Despite my only contacting them a few days beforehand, I was greeted by Marion with a welter of information on the WEST dynasty in West Tarring and Clapham. Thank you all. Joan.

    3. Hi Joan, I was looking for my David Venson WEST, who supposedly worked for Thomas Henty at West Tarring before travelling with the Henty family to Tasmania. After 15 years of looking for him, I found he was actually a convict transported to Tasmania - and he worked for Thomas Henty after his emancipation. While searching for my David, I did find WEST family names in the Sussex Registers, but I haven't kept the names as they don't connect with my family. Cheers Trish Nowra NSW > Hello. 1. [SXP] WEST family in Tarring and East Preston
    2. Joan
    3. Hello. New to this list and looking for any information about a Peter WEST and family in Tarring, East Preston or similar. I have the family on the 1881C North St, East Preston. Peter 59 and Maria 56 with a daughter Alma, 25. There is a possible marriage for Peter and a "Maria", with the wife's surname CHOPPER on freebmd. On Family Search there is reference to a Maria WAITE with several dates for a birth, death and burial but I can't find a marriage for Peter WEST and "M" WAITE. There is a birth ref for Alma WEST on freebmd, Dec qtr 1855 Worthing District, ref 2b 245. In 1876 a Caroline WEST, spinster of full age, married Henry BRYANT. Her father is shown as Peter WEST, labourer. In the next census - 1881 - her pob is given as West Tarring, age 27. In 1891 she's age 37. I want to send for this Caroline's birth certificate as there was a story told of a mystery surrounding her birth. There are plenty of Caroline Wests on freebmd but none in Worthing District. There are several marriages for an Alma WEST at an appropriate time. Is there anyone researching these families or could help with further information, please? Such as the family's whereabouts in previous census. What is strange, is that last year I was contacted by someone also tracking WESTs. Their family rellie worked for a firm HENTY in West Tarring and they had looked for him in Tarring and I thought she said there were no WEST names in the Tarring parish reg. Any assistance gratefully recd. Thank you. Joan.
