Hi Rosemary It may help to say who you are expecting to find and the source of your information There is no address "Miles Nursery" as far as I can see so how do you come to put that address to that census reference ? Further on there is a market gardener, Henry SAYERS And a varied selection of Ag Labs and domestic gardeners etc (I am assuming here you are looking for a garden type nursery?) Let us know who it is and we can try again Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Could someone do a look up for me on the following? > > I'd like to know the names of the people living at the Miles Nursery in the > 1891 census. > > Details are: > > Steyning Registration District > > Reference RG12/825 Folio 68 > > Hope this is enough information. > > Bye, > > Rosemary M Chalmers
Well, I tried! Without a page ref it threw up 62 refs - pages 5 and 6, all in Steyning but none were a nursery! I have no idea where to go after that! >From The Pall Mall Gazette ( London, England ), Friday, April 23, 1875; Issue 3176. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has at length succeeded in putting an end to the proceedings of Mrs. CHANTRELL , who has been twice convicted of starving dogs and cats on her premises at Rottingdean. Having obtained the necessary authority from the Court of Chancery, the officers of the society took possession of Mrs. CHANTRELL's premises, and all but two of the emaciated animals were poisoned. This is NOT connected to our research, but, being curious about this lady, we have discovered that she was an Oil & Watercolours Artist, maiden names Mary Elizabeth DEAR. On the 1861 census she was visiting Robt. D. CHANTRELL at 7, Park Place, Camberwell, Surrey. He is shown as married. An Architect. On Nov. 2 1867, Robert Dennis CHANTRELL, a widower, of Full Age, a Gentleman, living in Rottingdean, married Mary Elizabeth DEAR, spinster, of Full Age, No occupation shown, living in St.Pancras. His father was Robert CHANTRELL dec'd, & her father was John DEAR, dec'd. They married at St. Pancras Parish Church by licence. In 1871 she is married to Robert D CHANTRILL, an Architect aged 78. Mary E is 38 & they have a 2 year old daughter Marian. They were living at Ivy Cottage, Rottingdean. Robert Dennis CHANTRELL died aged 78 in March Qtr 1872 Reg. Dist. Croydon 2a 116. In 1881 widowed Mary E CHANTRELL aged 48 is living in Castle Street, St. Martins in the Fields ( District 3a ) Westminster, London. She is still occupied as an Artist in Oil & Watercolours. In other newspaper reports it mentions in 1867 that Robert Dennis CHANTRELL was "before the courts" about the above mentioned animals, which numbered between 100 & 200, many were skeletons, but were Mary E's models for her Artistic work. When Robert died, Mary E was granted probate, but, in 1874, this was revoked & given to his son, Robert, by his first marriage. At that time it was stated that Robert senior was on the verge of Lunacy, & that he & Mary E had violent rows. He was originally, apparently, Mary E DEAR's guardian. On Googling the name Mary E DEAR, it appears that her Art Work is still being sold.
>From London Evening Post, March 9, 1754 - March 12, 1754; Issue 4108. We hear from Sussex, that a few Days ago Farmer VOKE , of Birdham, near Chichester, went to Havant in Hants to receive some Money for his Son, and calling in at a Publick House, he pulled out some Pieces of Gold; and an Hour after he left the House he was found murdered, and his Money gone. This is the Place where GALLY and CHATER stopped, and where misled in their Way to Major BATHNEY's and so inhumanly treated by the Smugglers; and it is thought some of that villianous Gang are concerned in this, they herding together in great Numbers there. As soon as the poor Man's Son heard of his Father's Death, he took to his Bed and died.
I have traced my Edwards family living in Witley/Godalming back to John Edwards who in 1776 in a marriage document states that he is a widower and from the Parish of Littlehampton, Sussex. The only records I can find locally are the Parish register Transcripts for Littlehampton to 1753 where the only Edwards I can see was Oct 14 1753 Elizabeth d. of John and Franses Edwards. I would be grateful if anyone has any other details of Edwards in Littlehampton. Thanks Bob Edwards Melbourne
Many thanks to Sharon who replied to my former message with some information on the Crafts family that I didn't have so I am not hoping someone may be able to help with this query. My g.g. grandmother Emily Wells had a sister Harriet (born 1830). She appears on the 1851 Census lodging at 2 Brunswick Place, Brighton. Her 16 year old brother George (errand boy) is with her. Harriet was a nurse. I cannot find either of these on the 1861 Census. Of course Harriet could be married by that time. I have found the death of a George Wells in July 1851 in Brighton so this could be George the son of Frederick Wells and Susannah Crafts. Emily (b.1840 Brighton) also appears to be missing from the 1851 Census. She emigrated to Australian in 1859 As both the parents, Frederick and Susannah , appear to have died between 1846-1850 the children may have been in a home or fostered out. Anything at all on this family would be appreciated. Dawn Hutchinson

Hi All, I wonder whether anyone has any connection with the HABENS family of Tonbridge or Brighton area! I know that a lot of the Habens from Brighton are connected with Gosport Habens, but I just wonder where the Tonbridge lot came from, and if they are connected! Many thanks, Den

Pure guesswork but I would suggest family - or friend - connections. When someone dies everything changes. Who can help? Who can bring up the children? Where does the money come from? An aunt? A cousin? Even a former neighbour... I would guess that someone in Brighton was in a position to help support a six year old child and that later on the same word of mouth - or even a religious connection - may have found the apprentice master. Do you know where his mother's parish of origin was? Are there any coastal connections within the family? What was his father's occupation? eg fishing/customs might well know others further along the coast. I wonder if anyone can help me with a long standing puzzle I have. William JOLLY was born in Canterbury in 1795 and his father died there in October 1801. His mother Elizabeth may have died there in 1805, but there is some question about this. The next time I can locate him is back in Canterbury in 1812 as an apprentice grocer but it states that he was from Brighton. He returns there by 1822 where he marries Mary FORD in St Nicholas Church. And continues in Brighton with his family for decades. So my puzzle is: 1 why would he have gone to Brighton as a child around 1801/1805 and where to? Army? And why return to Canterbury in 1812? 2 If his mother didn't die in 1805 but went with him, why; and what happened to her there (I can find no trace)? Here's hoping Andrew Jolly

I am hoping someone may be able to give me some information on Susanna Crafts who was born 1804 in Arundel. Her parents appear to be James Crafts and Frances Rowland who married in London in 1801 and their first child Frances was born there. Susannah Crafts married Frederick Wells in 1822 in Dorking. I am descended from their daughter Emily born 1840 in Albion Street, Brighton. Anything on any of these families would be appreciated. Dawn Hutchinson
