    3. As my husband is about to celebrate his 70th birthday - also 6 September! and we have already 8 family who have arrived with another 17 arriving over the next day and a half - I do not have time to do this, but you could look closely at births for Northeast and Hefferman in 1917. You could then try a marriage search for the single names on their own and see what comes up. (You should not find too many, both are fairly unusual surnames) Have you asked the son if he would be prepared to send you a phoocopy of the cert? Are we talking 3 generations all called Allan? if you can get hold of any RN history/pay records for him that might throw something up.I am not sure if the time limit is 75 or 100 years... 3. Thanks Nivard. I have now written to my cousin Allan!(3rd generation) for details of dates from the certs if he has them, which I assummed he or someone has because he sent me corrections to some of the info I had put in the tree, and I have put the problem to him in a letter-he hasnt a computer and isnt into family history as a hobby/interest unfortunately! Hes a Golfer!. Thanks for the reference below, I will have a look and see if I can down load it. BMD records indicate that my Allan was born Dec Quarter of 1870 in Eastergate,(baptism record shows 6th November 1870) which is Westhamptnett so am not sure about 1869 in Barnham. He could have given the wrong info. They are mostly all Allan but have found Alan in one search which should have been Allan. Hoping to do as much as I can without travelling to the Archives from Brum. Many thanks again to both you and Jean. Am very grateful. 3. Hi Eileen The best way to establish the parentage is to get the 1917 birth cert On the marriage does he list his father as Allan / Alan ? 3. I have a problem which I hope someone can answer re Allan/Alan NORTHEAST born 1870 in Eastergate. He was a seaman, so pops up in Portsmouth in 1911 as a Stoker in the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Sailors Home. His son Allan was apparently born in Grimsby in 1917, 6th September.-(given to me by his son, also Allan, who should know if he has the cert.) and died in 2009 aged 91 in Peacehaven. I have found a marriage for Allan aged 57 to an Eliza J Heffermen in 1927 in Grimsby aged 40 if the birth I have found for her in 1887 is correct. The only death on freebmd is for this Allan in 1945 aged 75 in Brighton. Now I want to know do you think he was away at sea for 10 years and only got married on his return when he found he had a son, or could Allan be the son of an earlier marriage/liason and how do I find out? many thanks for any help. 3. Hi Judy Its seems clearly Stone Drawer in both cases in 1871 I have not found that as a specific occupation but a Coal Drawer was a Pit worker who pushed or pulled carts of coal (a dictionary of old trades - Colin Waters) So by inference you would suspect a stone drawer did the same in a quarry with stone Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > Can someone with access to the 1871 Census for Sussex please check the > occupation for me. > > The reference is: RG10/1037 17/2, the name being William Fuller, birth year > 1845 in Sussex. 2. >From Public Advertiser ( London, England ), Wednesday, August 15, 1759; Issue 7730. On Thursday last in the Afternoon, Thomas ANSELL , a noted Smuggler, known by the Name of Surry Tom , was executed at Horsham in Sussex, pursuant to his Sentence at the Assizes held at Lewes for that County, for being concerned with other Smugglers in shooting Thomas COLE , a Dragoon, near Elmer, in the Year 1757. The Deceased, and other Dragoons, was assisting the Custom-House Officers in hindering Smugglers from carrying off a large Quantity of Tea, etc., which they had landed out of a Cutter from Bologne, on which the Smugglers fired, and shot COLE dead on the Spot, and wounded several others; and for this Fact two of the Gang were executed, and hung in Chains last August. ANSELL declared that he was not the Man who fired off the Blunderbuss, that Day. He was a stout bold Man, and died with great Resolution, but very penitent. There was the greatest Concourse of People at the Gallows that was ever known, to whom he spoke for about a Quarter of an Hour, and said Women and excessive Drinking had brought him to this untimely End. After Execution his Body was delivered to the Surgeons to be dissected and anatomized.
