Hallo Hilary Thatnk you for the information. That's a pity. It would have been nice to have a smuggler in the family even if he did get caught. I'd be very grateful if you would pass on my email address to your contact. I'd be grateful for any help. Connie in London

You could put up the details on www.bmdshare.com I have found a number of useful facts from other contributions. Hello Connie I have Ansell in my Family Tree and received a lot of help researching from a member of the Sussex Family History Group. I don't know whether she belongs to this Sussex Plus group. I can try putting her in touch with you if not. Are you happy for me to pass on your email address? Anyway, according to the information she gave me, the Thomas who married Mary Lamb, died in 1811 so is not the Thomas you mention. Hallo Does anyone have any information or can advise me of a source for further information about the above Thomas ANSELL, such as parents, siblings, wife, children. He was executed at Horsham on 9 Aug 1759 for involvement in the shooting of a dragoon. FamilySearch has a possible marriage for a Thomas ANSELL to a Mary LAMB in Horsham (1756) and subsequent baptism in the same place (1759) for a Thomas s of Thomas and Mary who would appear to be his son. Thank you Roger and Anne Again with previous help from the list, each of the three Richard and Elizabeth Smith had a son Richard. There is also another marriage for a Richard and Lucy Underdown at Wadhurst. Could this Richard be the son of Richard and Elizabeth Martin who married at Wadhurst? And could this son Richard be the one born 29 May 1799 at Wadhurst. My Richard who married Lucy Piper came to Australia in 1839 after Lucy died in 1837, which means I am unable to look up any census information. Would you know where or how I could access the actual registers and not just the indexes to see if any other information has been recorded? And how I wish there was someboby else reseaching this family! Or even the other families so I could rule them out! That would be too easy, wouldn't it? Hello list My 3 x great grandfather Richard Smith was born approximately 1797 to parents Richard and Elizabeth. My Richard married Lucy Piper nee Ransom at Hollington 10 July 1827 and then lived at Battle. With previous help from the list 3 marriages were found for a Richard Smith and Elizabeth. 1st - Richard to Elizabeth Banks 30 Sep 1787 at West Firle 2nd - Richard to Elizabeth Tipper 27 Jan 1791 at West Dean 3rd - Richard to Elizabeth Martin 17 Mar 1791 at Wadhurst. How can I determine which Richard and Elizabeth are the parents of my Richard? Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. With thanks Chris Randall
Thank you to George Pickering, Nivard Ovington and Andrew Jolly for their answer to my query. It looked like Stone Drawer to me but I never gave a thought to it being correct. I kept thinking of Stone Dresser if their was such an occupation. You have all been very helpful.

Hi Chris, Firstly I would look at where they were married. West Dean is in West Sussex near Chichester, West Firle is just to the east of Lewes in East Sussex and Wadhurst is south of Royal Tunbridge Wells so they are some distance apart from each other. Hollington is north west Hastings - so West Firle is the closest. Have a look at any baptisms - sometimes the mother's maiden name is recorded. Do you know any of Richard's siblings? If you're lucky he may appear with a sibling on a census - or Richard and Elizabeth may, although given their potential birth dates this is less likely. Hope someone else is researching the same family! hth, Anne > Date: Fri, 2 Sep 2011 20:34:58 +1000 > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Subject: [SXP] Which Smith family? > > Hello list > > My 3 x great grandfather Richard Smith was born approximately 1797 to > parents Richard and Elizabeth. You have dredged up a perfectly correct term! They are different ends of the business - the stone drawer pulls it out of the quarry, the stone dresser finishes it off, making smart, accurately cut and finished cubes (or whatever!) for building or statuary purposes. Can someone with access to the 1871 Census for Sussex please check the occupation for me. The reference is: RG10/1037 17/2, the name being William Fuller, birth year 1845 in Sussex. I think the occupation is either Stone Dresser or Stone Drawer (which I have not heard of). In the same household is William's brother James with the same occupation. Any help in this matter would be appreciated. Regards Judy Berntsen New Zealand
Many thanks Heather. Yes there 12 siblings altogether and I have 6 at Eastergate, where they lived, including Allan, then there was Aldingbourne, Petworth, Felpham, Old Shoreham, Preston and Clapham. Have just realised that In 1871 they were living at Barnham Road so this is maybe where Allan the sailor got Barnham from. With all the help from everyone I seemed to have solved the original mystery and havent had to move from my PC!! Brilliant. so very many thanks everyone. You are stars. Hi, confusion sometimes happens over "Westhampnett" There is a parish of Weshampnett the church is called St. Peter, and Westhampnett Registration District. This was made up of at least 46 parishes (including Barnham) and ran from 1837-1935 when it then came under Chichester District. I think Allan was baptised at Eastergate with at least six siblings, and a older brother baptised at Aldingbourne. Barnham and Aldingbourne are both just over a mile from Eastergate.
