Johannes, Sr., a section on the settlements of Dutton/Verdie "One Location was known as Dutton, a point on the rails 12 miles south of Callahan."....."Verdie Surrency was born in 1887, and within 10 years her Dutton birthplace would boast her name. In the late 1860's, Verdie's father, J. Allen Surrency, moved to Florida from Tattnall County, Georgia with his widowed mother and five brothers and sisters. By 1885, J. Allen had married Sarah Bezorah (Bell) Gay from Trader's Hill and was settled at Dutton. Surrency, a popular man with railroad personnel, farmed and cut cordwood for the trains as a livelihood. On December 18, 1895, postal service was discontinued in Dutton, and upon its reinstatement in '98, J. Allen Surrency was appointed postmaster. It is presumed that he was granted the right to name the post office, since he gave it the name of his ten-year-old daughter, Verdie."
