Author: Matthewsplace Surnames: Surrency, Stafford, Copeland Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.surrency/57/mb.ashx Message Board Post: For many years I have been trying to prove that Samuel Surrency and his wife Elizabeth Stafford had a daughter named Charlotte, born abt 1785 in S. C. and died in Tattnall Co. Ga. abt. 1860. She married Jesse Copeland. This Samuel Surrency was a Revolutionary Soldier. Elizabeth Staffords father was Joshua Stafford who also was a Revolutionary soldier. Does anyone have any info that would prove Charlotte was a daughter of Samuel Surrency? One of her brothers named one of his daughters Charlotte and she died at an early age. Thank you for any help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Florida abt.1881 to Elton Surrency and Martha Ellen Watson. She married Emory James Campbell in 1898 and their children were Ada, Ethel, Lessie and Clyde. I am searching for a burial site for Oregon and a definite date of death. No death certificate available through the state of Florida. What family is left says she died in 1913 at childbirth. Author: durance Surnames: Surrency Durrence Tootle Robinson Sasser Zorn Crummey Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.surrency/55.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm almost convinced that Samuel D. Surrency the son of A.P. and Wealthy Surrency is buried there because I came across a cemetery listing a whole back that was in the Surrency City Cemetery, I believe, that was for a Samuel D. Surrency. It stated that he loved Darlington, SC so much. This appears to have in all likelihood been the Samuel Surrency who was an attorney-at-law. It would probably have been a place that he would have been close to whole studying law. I might clue you into another place I want to check into sometime soon. A Wealthy Surrency bought a burial plot at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA. I wonder who may be buried there? If you look into the Samuel Surrency in Jesup City Cemetery, it might help you to know that he is living with his daughter in his last census reading in Wayne Co. His daughter is buried at Love's Chapel Cemetery, Tattnall, with her mother, Susan Love, who appears to have remarried after divorce from Samuel Surrency. You migh! t keep the Samuels straight by referring to A. P.'s son as Samuel D. Surrency and James's son as Samuel S. Surrency. I've seen him as Samuel S. Surrency in research I've come across. Samuel S. had blood or step siblings John M., Wiilliam(who was in all likelihood the Surrency killed in the Civil War), and Jane Surrency Zorn who married James Daniel Zorn(both buried a Gum Branch Cem., Liberty). They were all the step siblings of the children of James and Hester Sasser Surrency. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Allen Powell Surrency and Wealthy Robinson Surrency are both buried at the Overstreet Cemetery in Appling County. There is also an Ellen Robert Surrency 2/16/1874 to 12/3/1875, an Allen Surrency 5/17/1897-3/4/1970 and his wife Irene 1904-1970 buried in the same cemetery. The Overstreet Cemetery is on private land and I'm going to contact the owners and see if they'll let me do a photo/transcription of the cemetery. I do not have anything yet on Samuel Surrency but I definitely discovered the confusion between the two Samuel Surrency's that you spoke of. I'll work on that next. But, you might try looking in a book called The Re-Organization Of The Ga Militia 1864. They were cores made up of old and severely wounded soldiers to be used as a last resort. While I have you on the line. Do you know where Wealthy Robinson Surrency, his wife, was laid to rest? I know she remarried a Phippins, but was unsure if she is resting beside Allen P. Also, isn't Samuel D. Surrency, her son, buried at Surrency City Cemetery. I know the Wayne Co. Cemetery books have him buried at Jesup where his widow is buried. But, he lived in Surrency, GA, up until his death, and another Samuel Surrency lived in Jesup until his death. I just believe the one in Jesup is the son of James Surrency from Tattnall Co. The cemetery transcriber knew nothing of the other Samuel Surrency who was living in Jesup. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Johannes, Sr., a section on the settlements of Dutton/Verdie "One Location was known as Dutton, a point on the rails 12 miles south of Callahan."....."Verdie Surrency was born in 1887, and within 10 years her Dutton birthplace would boast her name. In the late 1860's, Verdie's father, J. Allen Surrency, moved to Florida from Tattnall County, Georgia with his widowed mother and five brothers and sisters. By 1885, J. Allen had married Sarah Bezorah (Bell) Gay from Trader's Hill and was settled at Dutton. Surrency, a popular man with railroad personnel, farmed and cut cordwood for the trains as a livelihood. On December 18, 1895, postal service was discontinued in Dutton, and upon its reinstatement in '98, J. Allen Surrency was appointed postmaster. It is presumed that he was granted the right to name the post office, since he gave it the name of his ten-year-old daughter, Verdie." 1. Re: [SURRENCY] Surrency reunion in Jesup, Ga
    2. Scott Peeler
    3. Ruth, I am descended from Samuel D. Surrency, III's marriage to Elizabeth Copeland. They were my gt, gt grandparents. The reunion near Jesup is for the descendants of one of the sons of S.D.'s second marriage with Elizabeth Kennedy and his descendants, Jacob Franklin Surrency (J. Frank). There were two families of us from other Surrency lines who attended their reunion in 2000. While they were kind to us that day and included us in everything, they did not invite us back nor did the two sisters who organized the reunion respond to letters written to both of them individually. Obviously, that means they really weren't interested in having us come back in spite of the fact I offered to give a program about our Surrency ancestors since I have been researching since 1968. I do not know anyone from the family names you mentioned. There was a Dukes/Surrency marriage in Surrency, GA. My ancestors moved away from the Tattnall County area in the very early 1900's. Jesup is in Wayne County where my grandmother was born, but she grew up in Reidsville, Tattnall County, where the family had lived before going to Jesup for a short while. My best to you in your research. The Surrency reunion was held in a community center in the Madray Springs area north of Odum, GA. 3. Hello. Saw your post and would love to know who's who down in Jesup. We were down for a Landon reunion and there were several Surrency / Copeland people there. They were not sure though, how they related on back in time and none of them ever wrote to me later. I would love to get in touch with others of these two lines and compare some notes. I'll send you our line on down as it was Surrency mar. into the Dukes name > Eddenfield > Murray > Landon. My mother in law is still living and was born outside Jesup. Her dad was Bennie Waldon Landon, son of George and Susie Burke Landon. If you are in touch with any Landon folks, I'd love to hear from them as well. There is controversy as to who of the Landons are related to who. George would be my husband's gr grandfather and that is as far as I have traced back for definate sure. I have info on his possible parents but would like to find some help. Ruth in IL
