Brink: While a young man, Ozias Brink worked as a boatman on the Hudson River with his father and brothers. He enlisted during the Civil War on Sep 25, 1861 in Hartford, CT, in the 8th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He was then described As being 5 feet 5 inches tall, with gray eyes, light hair, and a light complexion. He was court martialed on Mar 18, 1864 for going AWOL for 2 days. He was also hospitalized many times for various ailments during the course of the war. While in the hospital he served as a guard. He claims to have been shot in the back of the neck during the battle of Antietam. When his first enlistment was up he reenlisted and was then mustered out on December 12, 1865. During his first marriage, he moved to New York City, where he got a job as a cook on a "mud-digger" boat that sailed to India. After the war, he injured his kneecap, which was then replaced, and he lived for many years on his Civil War pension alone. According to the Coroner's Report, on the day he died, Ozias Brink had a "spell of Rheumatism" whereupon he sat down in a chair for a while and was soon found dead by his wife Sadie, who summoned the police.
