NELSON, William; IRL > NY,USA; 1848 [email protected] (William Stewart) wrote; William Nelson(b 1812), his wife Jane Woods(b Mar 12, 1813) and several children sailed from Liverpool in 1848 to NY then settled in Ontario. All I know is that they were natives of Co. Monaghan. I would like to know more about the family in Ireland. Would appreciate hearing from anyone searching this line or someone who knows where the name originated. Where they Irish or Scots-Irish? Mary (Nelson) Stewart [email protected] ============================ There were 42 WOODS in the parish of Donaghmoyne in 1823. That is around Carrickmacross, in the south of co. Monaghan. There are 112 townlands in that parish, I have the list. The Woods name could be a translation of an Irish name or the name of a more recent settler. The Irish name was O'COILLIGH. Cull, Cuill (coill) = "a wood". I think they were Irish as the settlers were not warmly welcomed in those parts at that time period. There was a David and a Francis Nelson there also. In Matheson's births by county in 1890, there were 10 WOODS in co. Monaghan and no other county had more than 4. Looks like Monaghan might be the place to search. A Wm. Nelson of Corvally was awarded a contract for caring for the roads in 1881. In the 1930s there was "land agitation" in Monaghan. The Nelsons of Longfield, Carrickmacross, paid 3000 pounds for part of the Jackson estate. Those who had these lands taken in conacre objected and the Nelson's property was attacked and the family subjected to personal abuse. Anne Nelson of Ballybay was a teacher in 1824 being paid 46 pounds per annum. F.H. Nelson owned the first bus service that linked Ballybay, Monaghan, Middletown, and Armagh, in 1927.
