Cruise, Volume I, The Croesen Families of America, Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, Inc., [1998]; hereinafter CFA); possibly d. Germantown, Philadelphia Co., PA 1804 (correspondence with M. Marie Metzgar, hereinafter Metzgar); will made 18 Feb 1789; proved 2 Nov 1805 (Pennsylvania Vital Records, 1:26, CFA; hereinafter PVR); m. (1) 10 April 1739 Maria VAN VLIET: Anno 1739. On 31 March registered under witness of Folkert VAN NOORDSTRAND, on 10 April, after three announcements were married, Dirk KROESEN, young man, born in Bucks county, with Maria VLIET, young daughter, born on the Raritans (PVR: 1:261, CFA). Maria VAN VLIET, b. near Raritan, Somerset Co., NJ ca. 1720; d. before 16 Feb 1758; reportedly dau. of a shoemaker, John Van Vliet (Metzgar). Derrick m. (2) Churchville, Bucks Co., PA 16 Feb 1758 by license Maria (VAN HORN) BENNETT (Abraham-4-3, Barent-2, Christian-1): "Derrick KROESEN Widower, and Maria BENNET, Widow" (PVR: 1:265, CFA). Maria VAN HORN m. (1) Isaac BENNETT 17 Oct 1745; bore him several children including a son, Abraham BENNETT (Metzgar). In CFA, Maria VAN HORN is identified as the dau. of Abraham-3 VAN HORN. However, it is actually the will of Abraham-4 Van Horn (Abraham-3) that cites a dau. named Mary KROESEN (Warren S. Ely, Bucks County Historical Collections, 44-50, Metzgar). Children by Maria VAN VLIET (Metzgar), birth order uncertain, ordered as they appear in Derricks' will; all but Elizabeth designated as children of Maria VAN HORN in CFA, surname KROESEN: i. Elizabeth-5, c. Bucks Co., PA 25 May 1740; dau. of "Dirk KROESEN and Mallie VAN VLIET" (PVR: 1:197, CFA); m. Christian CORSEN (Metzgar, CFA). ii. John. According to some sources, he was bapt. in Bucks Co., PA in 1742 (Metzgar); according to others, he was born in 1752 (CFA); m. Janntie CORSEN (Metzgar). Whether born in 1742 or 1752, his birth occurred well in advance of 1758 clearly indicating that he was the son of Maria VAN VLIET, rather than of Maria (VAN HORN) BENNETT. Assuming John was born in 1742, and given that he was the first son named in his father's will, he was probably the eldest son. If so, Dutch naming practices would indicate that his maternal grandfather, John VAN VLIET, died before 1742. iii. Francis-5; m. Mary _____. iv. Margaret, m. _____ BLACK (Metzgar.) v. KRUSEN Francis; BucksCo,PA,USA > SussexCo,NJ,USA; 1750-1819 I am seeking all genealogical and biographical details for the KRUSEN family documented below. In particular, the origins of Mary (_____) KRUSEN or any information that supports or refutes the identification of my direct ancestor among several cousins named Francis KRUSEN, KREWSON, KROESEN, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Please reply directly to: Perry Streeter (PStreeter@acccorp.com) Listowner, STREETER-L@RootsWeb.com RootsWeb Sponsor . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Francis-5 KRUSEN (Derrick-4, Francis-3, Derrick-2, Garret-1), b. probably Bucks Co., PA; d. Mansfield Township, Sussex Co., NJ 7-13 Jan 1819. Francis married Mary _____; she d. after 13 Jan 1819. Contrary to many sources, Mary (_____) KRUSEN was NOT Mary BLACKLEDGE; this issue is discussed in detail further below. Francis' paternal grandparents, Francis-3 and Elizabeth (VAN DER GRIFT) KROESEN, had eight sons. According to Dutch naming practices, each of these eight sons should have named their eldest son Francis to honor Francis-3. The name, Francis, had been introduced into the KRUSEN family to honor Francis-3' maternal grandfather, Francis CREGIER. Based on the theory that Richard-6 KRUSEN and Jasper-6 CRUSAN (both of Greenwood, Steuben Co., NY with sons named Francis) were sons of Francis KRUSEN d. 1819, I sought to determine which Francis-5 was their father. The potential existed for eight grandsons of Francis-3 KROESEN named in his honor. To date, the actual existence of any grandsons so named has been established for only three men, sons of Derrick-4, Leonard-4, and Francis-4. Francis-5 KRUSEN, father of Richard-6 and Jasper-6 d. 1819. Therefore, Francis-5 KROESEN (Leonard-4, Francis-3) can be ruled out; he d. before 5 Jan 1804, when Leonard-4 made his will (Bucks County, Pennsylvania Wills, 7:171, (Warren D. Cruise, Volume I, The Croesen Families of America (Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, Inc., [1998]; hereinafter CFA). On similar evidence, Francis-5 KROESEN (Francis-4-3) can also be eliminated as a candidate; he did not d. until 1844. By process of elimination, using the known facts, the logical, albeit unproven, conclusion is that Francis-5 (Derrick-4, Francis-3) was the father of Richard-6 and Jasper-6. The confusion created by the existence of at least three first cousins all named Francis Krusen has led to errors that remain widely accepted. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that at least two of the cousins both married women with the first name of Mary. Mary BLACKLEDGE m. Francis KRUSEN at Neshaminy (Churchville), Bucks Co., PA (correspondence with M. Marie Metzgar) on 26 Oct 1776 (Pennsylvania Marriages); he is frequently identified as Francis-5 (Derrick-4, Francis-3, Derrick-2, Garret-1). Also, it is often stated that Mary DAVIS m. Francis KRUSEN; he is generally designated as Francis-5 (Leonard-4, Francis-3, Derrick-2, Garret-1). However, Mary BLACKLEDGE and Mary DAVIS were actually the same woman; she married Francis-5 (Leonard-4). This conclusion is drawn from examination of the will of Mary (BLACKLEDGE) (KREWSON) DAVIS. In the will of "Mary KREWSON or DAVIS" of Southampton (Bucks Co., PA Abstracts of Willis, Liber 10, page 338), she is identified as the daughter of John BLACKLEDGE. It is clear that Mary BLACKLEDGE first married Francis KREWSON; he d.; and she then m. _____ DAVIS. This document, dated 7 July 1824, describes Mary as "advanced in years"; her will was proved later that same year on 7 December. Based on her widowed status and the names of her children it is evident that Mary married Francis-5 (Leonard-4). Mary (BLACKLEDGE) (KREWSON) DAVIS had sons named John B. [Blackledge?] KREWSON, Francis KREWSON, and Leonard KREWSON. Her daughters were named as Esther KREWSON, Elizabeth KREWSON, Rachel HIBBS, Mary AURHTON, and Bridget STATES. The names of her children suggest that Mary (BLACKLEDGE) (KREWSON) DAVIS was born Mary-3 BLACKLEDGE (John-1, William-1), daughter of John-2 and Bridget (GRIMES) BLACKLEDGE. Mary designated John B. KREWSON as the executor, indicating that he was the eldest son which, in turn, would indicate that his maternal grandfather, John-2 BLACKLEDGE, had died prior to his birth. "Francis KRUSER" made his will on 7 Jan 1819; it was recorded 20 July 1820 (Liber B of Wills, folios 52, 53). Francis named sons Derrick (Dutch for Richard), Jasper, and John; daughters, Joanna, wife of Aaron PETTY; Mary HORNBECKER; Elisabeth KRUSEN; and Margaret KRUSEN; granddaughter, Jemimah McINTIRE; and wife, Mary. Jacob TAYLOR and Joseph KERR were appointed executors; Elizabeth MARTIN, Henry HANKINSON, and John GARRISON witnessed the document. Perhaps John GARRISON was father of Richard-6's wife, Jane; Richard and Jane (GARRISON) KRUSEN named their eldest son John. Francis KRUZEN was referred to as deceased in the inventory of his goods, dated 13 Jan 1819 (Liber C of Inventories, folio 287). Children: i. Richard "Derrick" KRUSEN, b. Washington, Warren Co., NJ 17 May 1779; m. Jane GARRISON. ii. Jasper CRUSEN, b. 2 Oct 1782; d. 20 Sep 1835; m. 2 June 1803 Nancy ENGLE, b. 30 June 1780, d. 4 Sep 1828 (Bible Records of Bernidine (Crusen) Waldorf). iii. John. iv. Joanna, m. Aaron PETTY. v. Mary, m. Mary HORNBECKER. vi. Elisabeth. vii. Margaret. viii. daughter, m. _____ MCINTIRE. Child, surname McINTIRE: 1. Jemimah.
