This name is very seldom found outside counties Cork and Waterford. It has been associated with Co. Cork (particularly the Skibbereen area) since the mid 18th century. The first I have met is a Cork marriage license bond of 1735. The tradition that it is derived from the two words ship, sea, spoken by a shipwrecked sailor is too far fetched for serious consideration. I think it is merely a variant of the English surname Shipside (ship-sheep, side- side of a hill) Have you checked the Griffith Valuation and the Tithe Applotment Records? Good luck on your search.
