SWANTON Robert; IRL>MA,USA; 1872 I'm looking for information about Robert Swanton, born Oct. 1867, County Cork, Ireland. The Swantons settled primarily in the Ballydehob/Skull area, and I believe, were mostly farmers. I have a print-out of the 1853 Griffith's Valuation for the parish of Skull, and other nearby parishes containing the Swanton name. I'm trying to pinpoint the townland he would have come from. I've heard that the Swantons were so prevalent in that area that at one time, Ballydehob was known as "Swantonville". Of course, this is an unconfirmed rumor... Swanton is originally an English name, and is associated with the Wild Geese. I'd like to know more about this connection, too. Robert emigrated to Boston (I'm not sure which port he would have landed at) in 1872 at the age of five, so most likely would have travelled with his parents. They probably left out of Cobh. I don't know Robert's parents' names, but since Robert's first son was named George, this could also have been his father's first name. His second daughter is named Mary, so this may have been his mother's name. I haven't found any ship lists for this year, and am not sure where to look for them. Robert lived at 31 Dix Street in Dorchester, MA, and married Rosanna (sp?) Hanlon in 1896.They were members of St. Augustine's parish there, and were Roman Catholics. They had six children: George, William, Rosanna, Robert, Mary, and Elizabeth. Robert was a carpenter/builder. I have ordered microfilm from my local FHC on Boston Vital Records, hoping to find his parents names, and those of any siblings. I believe he had at least one brother, William, who came over here, but according to my great-aunt, used to travel back to Ireland quite frequently. I'm researching all the records I can find, but I was wondering if there were others researching this surname who might have information/connections? Thanks in advance, Ginni ginnisw@aol.com (Ginnisw)
