LYNCH John Richard / ALSOP Elizabeth; IRL/ENG; m. 1824 Hi, all... Sorry if this is posted more than once - I keep getting error messages back... I'm just starting out researching my family genealogy, and I found this newsgroup in my WebTravels. My only source of family info so far is my Dad, who gives me the following as the fartherest back he has managed to find over the years - he is an attorney, is over 70 years old, and still has an excellent memory, but apparently has not done any active research (that he admits to). ------------------------------------------------------ Note 1: Although my Dad tells me that the earliest named male LYNCH was listed in his source as a "free coloured", all the family I have ever known or heard of have been fully caucasian (no sign of mixed blood). This suggests to me that the term "free coloured" may (in those days) have been applied even to whites who were transported as criminals or for debt, and freed at the end of their sentence/service with that categorisation. (Any comments/information on the facts of this would be appreciated). Note 2: My Dad tells me that our family is rumoured to have originated in Galway, Ireland, although he says he has never seen any evidence to support that. Note 3: It appears that James Alsop LYNCH may have been born in England, but that he moved - his branch of the family continued from then on almost totally originating in Barbados. ------------------------------------------------------ Earliest known relative: John Richard LYNCH, m.1824 to Elizabeth ALSOP .JRL listed as a "Free Coloured". .JRL's mother may have been a MANIFRED (surname). JRL's Son: James Alsop LYNCH 1828-1888 Was a wealthy land-owner in Barbados, West Indies. Owned Friendship Plantation and at least two others. JAL's Son: Algernon LYNCH, died in England JAL's Daughte: Elizabeth, died in England aged 21. Other family (known by me): Percy LYNCH, (may have been JAL's son), was a judge in Barbados, died of extreme old age in 1960's, I believe. Louise WEBSTER, of Yorkshire, England, was my paternal grandmother. Winnie (Winifred?) WEBSTER, of Yorkshire, England, Louise's sister. Douglas Percy LYNCH (Sir), my father, has always lived in Barbados. Michael LYNCH, my father's twin brother, lives near Oxford, UK. James Challenor LYNCH, my father's eldest brother, lives in Exmouth, UK. Richard LYNCH, my father's twin brother, RAF Spitfire fighter pilot, killed before Battle of Britain.
