According to MacLysaght's book of SURNAMES OF IRELAND: (O)Rourke 0 Ruairc. One of the two great septs of Breffny. The family is not of Norse orign though Ruairc is from a Norse personal name. Irish exiles of the name were prominent in Russia, Poland and Austria and France. See Map of Leitrim. In his book More Irish Families, Their Names, Arms and Origins, MacLysaght sheds more light on the counties were Rourkes hailed from. "various times their territory expanded or contracted largely because of the long standing rivalry between the O'Rourkes and O'Reillys in Breffny (Cavan and west Leitrim). At is widest it extended from Kells, in Co. Meath, to Sligo. After Cromsell, like all great Gaelic families its star declined. " Even with all of of emigration Rourkes and O'Rourkes (including such variants of spelling as Rorke, & Roark) constitute enough members to rank in the top 100 most common Irish names. The majority of these families are found in the counties that comprise the old Breffny territory- Cavan, Leitrim and some of the adjoining counties. In the what little of what remains of the 1841 Census for County Cavan and 1831 for Derry County, a few Roarkes were listed with various spellings. They appeared in: Cavan: Drumroosk Drumcohill Lower Derry: Tamlaght O'Crilly Coleraine Would try the Family History Center they have a lot of helpful records. Good luck on your search. O'REILLY Margaret; Scarriff, Co. Kerry, IRL; 1850-1883 I am looking for the ancestors of my gg-grandmother Margaret Anne O'Reilly from the townland of Scarriff in the Parish of Dromod. Her father was James O'Reilly who was born about 1832. In the 1901 census for Scarriff James (aged 69) is living in the house with his brother Michael O'Reilly (aged 79) who was the Parish Priest. Next door to them was a Robert O'Reilly (aged 57) who is living with his family. I am trying to find out more about Margaret's family including who her mother was. Can someone point me in the right direction as to where I can find the parish records for Margaret's birth (probably around 1855-1860). Margaret married John O'Shea on April 8, 1883 in Catholic Chapel of St. Finians, in Spunkane, Kerry, Ireland. Please, Please Help!!!! Thanks Bob Power Whitby, Ontario, Canada bobp@lexmark.com
DWYER / O'DWYER; IRL>NY,USA; C 1847 I am researching two distinct Dwyer lines. #1) John Dwyer and wife Susan Real; both born in the southwest of Ireland circa 1820. They married in Ireland and had, at least one child, a daughter Honorah in 1845. (There were probaby other siblings born in Ireland as well) They emigrated to upstate NY in apx. 1847, eventually settling in Troy, NY. Their daughter Ellen was my grandmother's mother. #2) Jeramiah Dwyer was born in Ireland c. 1820, emigrated to Kentucky originally, but later married Mary ?(also born ireland) and moved north through Pennsylvania, and eventually settling in Troy, NY. Their daughter, Mary, was my grandfather's mother Mary's sister Anne married my grandfathers uncle So Mary and Anne Dwyer married Thomas and Edward Rogers Anyone connecting with any of these names? Love to hear from you. Patti . ppoole41@aol.com (PPoole41)
RYAN, Patrick; IRL>USA; 1847 Looking for information on my gg-grandfather Patrick Frank Ryan; left Liverpool aboard ship Adirondack on Jan. 7, 1847; arrived in NY; birthdate listed as March, 1819; parents listed as John Ryan and Fannie McCarthy: married Catherine Finnegan in 1856; died in Chicago in 1902. He was supposed to be from Limerick, but my father, who was researching him, could not pick up the trail in Limerick. Does anyone have a lead? Thanks, Pat Ryan Nelson (CNELSFAM@aol.com)
BAILEY; KID,IRL>ON,CAN; c. 1828 John BAILEY ( ~1773-1858) emigrated from Co. Kildare to Lanark County, Ontario, Canada, ~1828, with his daughter Dorthea (~1809-1894). I have no information about ancestors, spouse, or other children. John settled on a farm next to Samuel BAILEY, who had arrived in 1813 from Co. Tyrone, implying possible Tyrone connections for John. Dorthea married Samuel's son, John BAILEY (1814-1870), so the relationship between John and Samuel is unlikely to be close (at least I hope so!). Another BAILEY, Edward, (1800-1867) emigrated to Lanark from Castledermot Parish, Co. Kildare, in 1830. His father was likely James BAILEY (d.1820). Both branches of BAILEYS left for Lambton County, Ontario, in the 1850's and 1860's. Family lore says there is a relationship between Edward/Samuel/John, but it is not established. Does anyone have any information about BAILEYS from Kildare? Has anyone run into any Kildare BAILEYS who might be connected to these ones? Thank you. BROWN / WAUGH; DOW,NIR; 1800-1880 Looking for the families of Joseph and Catherine (Hanlon) WAUGH and Charles and Isabella (Gallacher) BROWN. The first family's son, William WAUGH (b.c. 1839 perhaps around Bangor) married 1860 in Scotland, the daughter of the 2nd family, Mary BROWN (b.c. 1840 perhaps near Bangor). MANSON; DOW,NIR; 1860-1910 Looking for any MANSON family in the area of Bangor, Co. Down during those years. We are missing two John MANSONs (one, a ships blockmaker, disappears age 58 from Scotland after 1861; another, probably a seaman (maybe a whaler), age 14 in 1870). These had connections to families of WAUGH, BROWN, GALLACHER, HANLON in the area of Bangor. Can anyone help me as to the nature of industry in Bangor from 1850 - 1920?
