PEYTON / GIFFARD; Dublin, IRL; c. 1790 PEYTON, Jane or GIFFARD, Jane born about 1790 PEYTON, William or GIFFARD, William born about 1814 PEYTON, Stanley or GIFFARD, Stanley born about 1815 There is a suggestion that they came from Dublin. I am searching for any leads on the above folks who apparently moved from Ireland to London some time between 1816 and 1827. Inexplicably, the family appears in the London 1841 census under the name GIFFARD, and in the 1851 census under the name PEYTON. If the children of Jane Giffard were younger, then I would expect that their mother might have remarried and they could have taken their stepfather's name, but the children were in their 20's, so this may not be likely. Has anybody any idea of what could cause the name change? "Andy Peyton" <alp@act.csc.com.au>
Re: TIERNEY, Patrick; IRL>NY,USA; 1870 I have a Patrick Tierney link, but it may not be the same one. Patrick J. Tierney was the older brother of my grandfather, James Joseph Tierney. They both lived in Passaic County New Jersey in their adult lives. Their parents were Timmothy Tierney and Ann McQueeney. I don't know where Patrick was born but James was born in Hartford, Ct. in 1872. Maybe there is a connection? Lila25@msn.com calred@aol.com (CalRed)

SHELDON, John Charles; ENG> IRL> USA; 1800-1900 John Sheldon married to Margaret Ann Dixon, they parented William Henry. Whether there were any other children is not clear. William Henry married Julia Genevieve Cluney/Cluny in 1905. They had 7 children who lived to adulthood, they were: William Henry, jr, James Albert, Joseph Patrick, Benjamin, Julia Genevieve (Sissy), John Charles, and Mary Teresa. I was told that my mother, Sissy, was full Irish, but upon doing this genealogy I am finding it may be a misconception and that in fact she was half Irish and half English. Can anyone help me to find out if the Sheldon origin came from Ireland or England or if there are Sheldon's in Ireland as well as England. "Sharon L. Arnold" <slarnold@worldnet.att.net>

Hi, folks -- Over the weekend, the machine at RootsWeb which hosts the soc.genealogy.surnames approval robot was moved from one network to another. Ordinarily that would be a good thing (we now have more bandwidth than before), but one side effect was that the new network didn't have access to RootsWeb's news server. To make matters worse, your moderator is in the process of moving to a new house and didn't have time to check up over the weekend! The end result is that everything submitted to soc.genealogy.surnames since last Friday got delayed. I'll be gathering up all of the submissions that got queued and will approve them over the next day or so. Subscribers will get a *lot* of messages while we catch up for the next twenty-four hours -- awfully sorry about that. Regards, Tim Pierce, soc.genealogy.surnames moderator-in-chief SURNAMES-L listowner
