    3. VERSCHOYLE John; DUB,IRL; -1800 I'm interested in John Verschoyle, born c1800(?) in Dublin, probably in the Dolphin's Barn area. He married Susannah St Ruth and their children included Ann and Benjamin. John and Benjamin were both wool merchants and glue dealers. It is likely John descends from the Henry (Henrik) Verschuyl who came to Dublin in 1568 with bro. William to escape religious persecution in the Netherlands - listed in Bourke's - but more info is needed on John's birth and parentage to confirm this. Can anybody assist? 3. HINCHEY / HINCHY Ann; CLA,IRL; -1831 My gr gr gr grandmother Ann/Hannah HINCHEY/HINCHY, of the townland of Drumline in Co. Clare, married Jeremiah BRUGGY around 1831, probably either in the parish of Newmarket-on-Fergus, where the offspring to be named shortly were baptised, or in Ennis. Her Bruggy children included those appearing in the aforementioned baptism records (Annie, March 1832; Mary, August 1834; Lot, August 1840) as well as those missing from the incomplete baptism records (Stephen, c.1830; Jeremiah, c.1837; and my ancestor Margaret, c.1838). It is thought that, widowed in the late 1850s, Ann and son Stephen emigrated to England, where descendants still live today, and other children (Jeremiah, Lot and Margaret) to New South Wales. Nothing is known of the destinies of children Annie or Mary. Together with the children coming to Australia came one Michael Hinchey of Meelick (near Newmarket-on-Fergus), probably Ann's nephew. Of course, Hinchey was not an uncommon name in that part of Clare at that time. Many emigrated to Australia during the Famine and later, and much info is held on Australian Hinchey descendants. Re: MCCARTIN,John Patrick; IRL>CO,USA; c.1880-1900 EZ DUFF TT wrote: > > MCCARTIN,John Patrick; IRL>CO,USA; c.1880-1900 > Couldn't find McCartin in all of the surname books I have, did find McCartan. According to Robert Bell's book - THE BOOK OF SCOTS-IRISH MacCartan - Apart from a few MacCartans in Dublin and Connacht, this is an exclusively Ulster name, found mainly in its homeland Co. Down and Co. Armagh. The name was origianlly in Gaelic MacArtain, "son of Artan', a dininutive or pet frorm of Art. The MacCartans take their name from their ancestor Artan, a great grandson of Mongan MacGuinesss of Iveagh in co. Down. Though normally subordinate to the MacGuinessess, the MacCartans were, for a short period in the mid 14th century, lords of Iveagh. Generally, however, they were chiefs of Kinelarty, a district, now a barony in central Down, and were tributaries to the O'Neills. At the beginning of the 20th cent. Mac Cartney was being used interchangeably with MacCartan in Co. Down, around Newry and Clough, and with MacCarten around Moira. It's important to remember how we may think our ancestors name was spelled, in Ireland it could be different, or one of many variations. I have the Griffith Valuation for one barony in County Down. Barny of Iveah Upper, Upper Half, Union of Newry and the various parishes and townlands. In this one barony found a few variations of the spelling McCartin. Michael McCarten - Parish of Clonallan, Townland of Clontafleece Michael McCarten - " " " " Aghavilly Patrick McCarten " " " Lurgancanty John McCarten " " Mary McCarton " Carrickcrossan Michael McCarton " " Mary McCarton " Daniel McCarton " Anthony McCarton " " The Griffith Valuation was taken in the mid 1850's, so the names my be of the parents or grandparents generation.
