    1. WINSPEARE; IRL; 1800-1895
    2. Elizabeth W. Knowlton
    3. WINSPEARE; IRL; 1800-1895 The name Winspeare has been handed down in my Irish quarter without any record of a person named Winspeare marrying into the family. Peter Foley (Church of Ireland minister) and Mary Rogers McCarthy of Glantane, my great, great grandparents, married in Kilshannig near Mallow, Co. Cork, in 1853. I have the parish record of the marriage. Mary had a father named William McCarthy, a schoolmaster, and a sister named Eleanor who taught school in the area and lived until around 1910. Peter Foley was born in Co. Kerry ca. 1831. The story is that his family was Roman Catholic and converted to Church of Ireland about 1843, during the famine. Malachi was a schoolmaster and/or scripture reader, and there is a record of a man with that name teaching in Cahirciveen, Co. Kerry, in 1826. Peter and Mary's children were William Malcolm, Thomas or Thomas Winspeare, and Anna Elizabeth, born much later. Other children died young with names like Alfred Peter, Mary Gibson, Arthur Winspeare, and Eleanor Agnes. Thomas Foley was an alcoholic and eventually left for the U.S. or Canada. William (b. 1854) married twice (Hackett and Clarke) and had a large family (all branches traced) while following a successful career as a minister in the Church of Ireland also. He served in Askeaton, Co. Limerick; Ballycastle, Co. Mayo; and Tralee, Co. Kerry, among other places, and died in in Dublin in 1944. He is said to have been born in Coachford, Co. Cork, but his baptismal record cannot be found in there or in Glantane or in the Mallow area. He said once that he remembered as a child in Skibbereen, Cork, hearing the coachman's horn in the night when the stage came in, before there was train service there. Almost no record of his early years exists. Recently I noticed the baptism of a Rebecca Winspeare McCarthy in Kilshannig Parish in the 1840's. Could the Winspeare family have employed the McCarthys and Foleys as teachers and fed them during the famine? Or perhaps they were the ones who helped Peter Foley attend Trinity College Dublin. William named his first son Thomas William Winspeare and his last daughter Gladys Eva Winspeare. For each generation down to mine at least one child was given Winspeare as a name without our having any knowledge of such a family being related to ours. Any clues or tips? 3. CLARKE, John Samuel; Portumna,GAL,IRL; 1815-1895 Researching John Samuel Clarke (1815-1895), farmer and agent for Grand Canal Company. Lived and died in Portumna, Co. Galway, with his wife, Eliza Hackett, m. ca. 1838, Co. Offaly. Both practicing members of the Church of Ireland in Portumna. Six children lived to adulthood: Jane H. (b. ca. 1839) m. Drought, immigrated with family to Canada (descendants found); Samuel John (b. 1843) m. Mills, eventually immigrated to Canada (descendant found); Thomas H.M. (b. 1845) m Hamilton, died in Jamaica, leaving one son; Lucinda (Lucy) E. (b. 1848) nm, died in Ireland; Josephine M. (b. 1856) m. Foley, died in Ireland leaving 8 descendants; and John Frederick (Fred) W. (b. 1861) immigrated to Australia, m several times, left numerous descendants (found). Can find no record of Clarke antecedents although there are many other Protestant Clarkes in area of Portumna and Woodford where they lived. Family story is that he came from Donegal but have no corroboration. He and his wife and a daughter Eliza M. (Lizzie) are buried in the Church of Ireland churchyard in Portumna. Elizabeth W. 3. GLANVILLE; WEM,IRL>OFF,IRL; 1790-1920 Jane Glanville, daughter of William of Tyrrellpass, Co. Westmeath, married Thomas Hackett of Castlearmstrong near Ballycumber, Co. Offaly, ca. 1810. Following others' suggestions I have read the book on Anglo-Norman Glanvilles in England; unfortunately it does not follow any Irish lines. I have met one good researcher of the Hackett family (so have the male line back to 1200), queried my family members, collected vital records, ordered the 1901 and 1911 censuses, and gotten copies of career histories. But everything is very sketchy, and I do not have Jane Glanville's mother's name. Since the 1922 fire destroyed the Church of Ireland records, I am depending on others to have collected some early 19th c. family history, especially of the Glanvilles. Would like to meet descendants of the Co. Offaly and Westmeath families. All tips appreciated. Elizabeth W. Knowlton KnowltonEW@compuserve.com

    3. LYNCH John Richard / ALSOP Elizabeth; IRL/ENG; m. 1824 Hi, all... Sorry if this is posted more than once - I keep getting error messages back... I'm just starting out researching my family genealogy, and I found this newsgroup in my WebTravels. My only source of family info so far is my Dad, who gives me the following as the fartherest back he has managed to find over the years - he is an attorney, is over 70 years old, and still has an excellent memory, but apparently has not done any active research (that he admits to). ------------------------------------------------------ Note 1: Although my Dad tells me that the earliest named male LYNCH was listed in his source as a "free coloured", all the family I have ever known or heard of have been fully caucasian (no sign of mixed blood). This suggests to me that the term "free coloured" may (in those days) have been applied even to whites who were transported as criminals or for debt, and freed at the end of their sentence/service with that categorisation. (Any comments/information on the facts of this would be appreciated). Note 2: My Dad tells me that our family is rumoured to have originated in Galway, Ireland, although he says he has never seen any evidence to support that. Note 3: It appears that James Alsop LYNCH may have been born in England, but that he moved - his branch of the family continued from then on almost totally originating in Barbados. ------------------------------------------------------ Earliest known relative: John Richard LYNCH, m.1824 to Elizabeth ALSOP .JRL listed as a "Free Coloured". .JRL's mother may have been a MANIFRED (surname). JRL's Son: James Alsop LYNCH 1828-1888 Was a wealthy land-owner in Barbados, West Indies. Owned Friendship Plantation and at least two others. JAL's Son: Algernon LYNCH, died in England JAL's Daughte: Elizabeth, died in England aged 21. Other family (known by me): Percy LYNCH, (may have been JAL's son), was a judge in Barbados, died of extreme old age in 1960's, I believe. Louise WEBSTER, of Yorkshire, England, was my paternal grandmother. Winnie (Winifred?) WEBSTER, of Yorkshire, England, Louise's sister. Douglas Percy LYNCH (Sir), my father, has always lived in Barbados. Michael LYNCH, my father's twin brother, lives near Oxford, UK. James Challenor LYNCH, my father's eldest brother, lives in Exmouth, UK. Richard LYNCH, my father's twin brother, RAF Spitfire fighter pilot, killed before Battle of Britain. 1. SWANTON Robert; IRL>MA,USA; 1872
    2. Ginnisw
    3. SWANTON Robert; IRL>MA,USA; 1872 I'm looking for information about Robert Swanton, born Oct. 1867, County Cork, Ireland. The Swantons settled primarily in the Ballydehob/Skull area, and I believe, were mostly farmers. I have a print-out of the 1853 Griffith's Valuation for the parish of Skull, and other nearby parishes containing the Swanton name. I'm trying to pinpoint the townland he would have come from. I've heard that the Swantons were so prevalent in that area that at one time, Ballydehob was known as "Swantonville". Of course, this is an unconfirmed rumor... Swanton is originally an English name, and is associated with the Wild Geese. I'd like to know more about this connection, too. Robert emigrated to Boston (I'm not sure which port he would have landed at) in 1872 at the age of five, so most likely would have travelled with his parents. They probably left out of Cobh. I don't know Robert's parents' names, but since Robert's first son was named George, this could also have been his father's first name. His second daughter is named Mary, so this may have been his mother's name. I haven't found any ship lists for this year, and am not sure where to look for them. Robert lived at 31 Dix Street in Dorchester, MA, and married Rosanna (sp?) Hanlon in 1896.They were members of St. Augustine's parish there, and were Roman Catholics. They had six children: George, William, Rosanna, Robert, Mary, and Elizabeth. Robert was a carpenter/builder. I have ordered microfilm from my local FHC on Boston Vital Records, hoping to find his parents names, and those of any siblings. I believe he had at least one brother, William, who came over here, but according to my great-aunt, used to travel back to Ireland quite frequently. I'm researching all the records I can find, but I was wondering if there were others researching this surname who might have information/connections? Thanks in advance, Ginni ginnisw@aol.com (Ginnisw)
