Hi, folks -- I just spent a day moving all of the SURNAMES lists from one system here at rootsweb.com to another. The newer machine is faster and has more stable mailing list software. That should (hopefully) mean less work for me to do maintaining the lists, which in turn should mean that I can spend more time improving the lists, such as setting up archive searching, cutting down on duplicate messages, and making it easier to post. The move took much longer than expected, and had a couple of pretty hairy pitfalls. Some consequences of this were that no messages went out on any of the lists for about 24 hours, and when they did start up again, the digest lists behaved like undigested lists. So the digest subscribers out there got a couple of dozen individual messages, some of them repeated a few times while I was ham-handedly debugging the system. This part was entirely my fault, and I'm sorry about that. As far as I can tell from here, all the trains are running on time.
