Family stories have it that my great-grandmother Ella/Ellen N Smith, born ca 1855, died 1935) is a relation of Captain John Smith. He was an early American colonist, wrote many works on the New World, was reputed to have been saved from death at Powhatan's hands by Pocahontas, and governed the Virginia colony from 1608-1609. He returned to England, then had many ventures afterwards. He is not known to have married or had children, so perhaps it is the unnamed brother that is the key??
