    3. Re: SMITH Captain John; Willoughby, LIN,ENG; 1579-1631 Diana, My family stories say that there is a connection to Capt. John Smith. However, we have to realize there were other Capt. John Smiths, than the "famous" one. Anyway, for your information I will send the info. I have. Hope we connect, or someone out there knows more about the Smiths. John Smith in this family. She says that the Smiths are descended from Capt. John Smith. My Grandma Dicy Ragle Glenn SMITH wrote that in a letter to her dau. Jessie Smith Shaler and she sent me a copy. I am still trying to pin down the early family. I found that there were many BROTHERS in the early Essex County, Massachusetts. Also there were BABCOCKS which was the first marriage of my GGGrandfather Samuel S. Smith. Also there were SMITHS in the county also. Eventually some of the Babcocks and Smiths went to New York. It is said that George DePew was born in New York. However when he joined the 147th NY Infantry he was a resident of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The states were so close together it is hard to trace their tracks. Angeline M. BROTHERS (alive in 1899) m. Samuel S. Smith from Boyleton, NY. I am looking for someone connected to the line of Martha Jane BABCOCK in order to find out more about my Great Grandfather, George DePew Smith. His father was Samuel S. Smith and his mother Angeline M. (Brothers) Smith. I have both of their signatures on his Civil War papers. Also have Angeline M. Smith sig. After George DePew died in Kansas. There has to be a DePew connection and a Brothers connection, that I have been unable to find. Appreciate any help on those two connections.
