RICE; ESS,ENG; 1939-1945 Researching my Father's Military service in the 2nd World War.My Father Sydney Walter Mitson RICE,born 1895 Castle Hedingham,Essex.Known to have served with the Suffolk Regiment in WW1,in Salonika Greece. In 1939 was in a reserved occupation working for Crittall Windows in Braintree Essex, making anti invasion devices, ammunition boxes, tailplanes for Lancaster Bombers, etc. Known at this time to be living at 33 Convent Hill,Bocking,Braintree,Essex. He was in the regular Home Guard.I am lead to believe that he may also have been ,in the then secret,Auxilary Units. These Auxilary Units were 'stay behind forces' designed to go underground when the Invasion took place, and the to harrass the enemy as the Maquis resistance did in France and other European Countries. The existance of these units has only been declassified in the last 2 years, known to have been formed by Major General Sir Colin Gubbins in 1939. I would like to hear from anybody who was in an Auxilary Unit with my Father, and any information that anybody may have about this orginisation.
