They may have formerly been called Steads, Staedt, or Staedts. A family tradition is that they came over to UK from Holland, to build the dykes in Lincolnshire. William Stead, cordwainer of Boston m. Mary Ann Wilcox their son William Stead b. 17 Feb 1850, d.1911 m.Elizabeth Brocklesby b. 19 Feb 1854, d.1916 Elizabeth was the first municipal midwife of Boston. William & Elizabeth had 17 issue, including my grandfather Arthur.
