DANIEL, Edward St. John, V.C.; GLS (Bristol), ENG; 1837-1868 I am looking for further information on Edward St. John DANIEL, V.C., of Clifton, Bristol, whom I believe may have been my gg grandfather. I have so far established the following: - Born 17th January 1837, Clifton, Bristol - Joined Royal Navy (Naval Brigade) as a Midshipman (promoted to Lieutenant 1859). Served on HMS Diamond and HMS Shannon (under Capt. William PEEL). - Awarded Victoria Cross (one of the first) for action in the Crimean War (aged 17) at Sebastopol, Battle of Inkerman, and assault on Redan (1854-55). In the London Gazette of 24th February 1857, in which the VC award was first announced, the name is given, in error, as Edward St. John DANIELS (this was corrected on 13th March 1857). Also saw action in the Indian Mutiny (1857-58) - Left Navy in 1861, but seems to have rejoined in 1868? (Possibly married in this interval - perhaps in Bristol or surrounding area). - Killed in action, 20th May 1868, in Maori uprising, Hokitika, New Zealand, age 31. Buried in unmarked grave, Hokitika cemetery. --- Our family tradition (for which we have never had solid evidence) is that an ancestor was awarded a VC in the Crimean War at the Battle of Inkerman, and as a result the male descendants have ever since been given the middle name INKERMAN. The only possible candidate is Edward St John Daniel - obviously I am looking to be able to prove the family connection. I am currently arranging to chase up civil registrations of births and marriages, but if anyone has any information that could help me to narrow down my search (or any other information), I would be very grateful. Our family eventually settled in Devizes, Wiltshire, and Bath, Somerset.. Thanks, Michael Inkerman Daniels Michael Daniels, PhD michael@mdani.demon.co.uk Liverpool John Moores University http://www.mdani.demon.co.uk
