MANNING; KEN,ENG>Salem, MA,USA; 1310-1618 I am researching the family of George MANNING. He was from Downe, Kent, England, the son of John MANNING and Agnes PETLEY. He married Joan WALLS on 23 Aug 1543 and died in 1583, having spent his whole life in Downe, Kent. They had a daughter Phebe MANNING who married James WATERS and had a son Richard WATERS. After the death of James, Phebe married William PLASSE and came to Salem, MA with William and her son Richard WATERS. I have just found a source ("One Waters Family") by Jeanne Waters Strong which traces this family back to Hugh MANNING (in St. Mary Cray), then John Manning, then another John MANNING (who died in 1436), then finally to a Simon MANNING who supposedly married Catherine CHAUCER, the sister of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer.
